Chapter 13 - I Became a Father

Rachel told me she was pregnant on an ordinary Tuesday.

No dramatic reveal.

She put the test beside my coffee.

I stared.

Then at her.

Then back.

“Is this yours?”

She blinked.

“No, Nathan. I found it on the sidewalk.”

I laughed.

Then cried.

Then laughed again.

Pregnancy terrified me.

Not because of becoming a father.

Because my entire understanding of parenthood had become complicated.

What makes a parent?

Blood?

Years?

Truth?

Sacrifice?

Rachel answered:

“Choice.”

She touched my hand.

“Repeated choice.”

That became my definition.

Our daughter, Mara Rose Brooks, was born the following spring.

Mara for my mother.

Rose because Rachel refused to let our child’s entire name become “a trauma memorial.”

Fair.

Vivian met her when she was three weeks old.

We had rules.

No unsupervised visits.

No financial gifts without discussion.

No decisions disguised as help.

Vivian agreed.

When I placed Mara Rose in her arms, Vivian cried.

“I don’t deserve this.”

I replied:

“This isn’t about deserving.”

She looked at me.

“It’s about what you do next.”

May you like

She nodded.

That was enough.
