Chapter 11 - The Empire He Chose to Bury

Going legitimate sounded noble.

Doing it was ugly.

Money disappeared.

Old allies became angry.

Three business partners walked away.

Two lieutenants refused new contracts.

One threatened Jonathan.

Rocco asked whether he wanted the problem handled.

Jonathan answered, "Legally."

Rocco stared.

"I need a dictionary."

"Buy one."

Jonathan hired attorneys.

Accountants.

Compliance officers.

People his father would have mocked.

They found problems everywhere.

Cash businesses with no clean records.

Properties purchased through cousins.

Security contracts that functioned as extortion.

Jonathan authorized disclosures.

Paid penalties.

Sold assets.

It cost millions.

The newspapers called it a collapse.

MORETTI EMPIRE CRUMBLES.

Jonathan framed the headline.

Meline saw it in his office.

"You framed that?"

"It makes me happy."

"You're strange."

"Yes."

The legitimate transportation company survived.

So did several restaurants.

The rest vanished piece by piece.

Men who once called Jonathan boss began calling him Jonathan.

He preferred it.

One afternoon Carlo Mancini entered his office without knocking.

Jonathan looked up.

Carlo had worked for his father.

"You're humiliating us."

"Sit."

"I don't want to sit."

"Then stand."

Carlo slammed a newspaper onto the desk.

"You testified to regulators."

"Yes."

"You handed them records."

"Yes."

"You paid government fines."

"Yes."

Carlo's face reddened.

"What happened to you?"

Jonathan considered.

"My son was born."

Carlo laughed.

"That's it?"

"No."

"My brother was murdered because our system made secrecy more valuable than truth."

Carlo scoffed.

"Your brother was weak."

Jonathan stood.

Old instinct.

Old anger.

For one second, Carlo saw the man he remembered.

Then Jonathan sat back down.

"Leave."

Carlo blinked.

"That's all?"

"Yes."

"You aren't going to threaten me?"

"No."

Carlo looked almost offended.

"Why?"

"Because I don't need you afraid of me."

He left confused.

Jonathan enjoyed that more than fear.

At the flower shop, Meline rebuilt her own life.

She had lost almost everything during the eight months after Jonathan abandoned her.

Apartment.

Savings.

Stability.

Now Jonathan offered to buy the building.

She refused.

"I don't want your money fixing consequences your money helped create."

He accepted that.

Instead he helped her negotiate a loan.

No ownership.

No hidden strings.

Bell & Finch Florists became Donnelly House Flowers.

Meline hired two women from the shelter where she had briefly stayed.

One afternoon Jonathan arrived with Daniel and found them painting the walls.

Meline handed him a roller.

"Suit off."

He stared.

"What?"

"You want to help?"

"Yes."

"Paint."

Jonathan removed his jacket.

One employee whispered, "Is that actually Jonathan Moretti?"

Meline answered loudly, "Today he's unpaid labor."

Jonathan painted badly.

Daniel slept in a carrier.

Meline kept correcting his edges.

"You negotiate shipping contracts worth millions and can't make a straight line?"

"They're different skills."

"Apparently."

By evening Jonathan had paint on his hair.

Meline laughed.

He looked at her.

"What?"

"Nothing."

"Tell me."

"You look normal."

Jonathan smiled.

"Terrible."

"No."

She touched the paint near his temple.

"Nice."

They kissed again.

Longer this time.

Then Daniel cried.

Meline laughed against Jonathan's mouth.

"Your son."

"Our son."

"Your turn."

Jonathan picked him up.

"Traitor."

Daniel screamed.

Meline smiled.

This was what Jonathan had once thought weakness looked like.

A baby.

Paint.

A woman teasing him.

No armed men.

No fear.

He had never felt stronger.

The federal case progressed.

Marco agreed to plead guilty.

His cooperation reduced his sentence but did not erase it.

Before sentencing, he asked to see Jonathan.

Jonathan refused.

Then Marco asked to see Meline.

She considered for three days.

Finally she agreed.

They met in a secure federal conference room.

Marco entered in custody.

Meline stared at the man whose lies had changed her life.

He looked smaller.

"I'm sorry."

Meline said nothing.

Marco continued.

"I told myself I was protecting Jonathan."

"From me."

"At first."

"You knew I wasn't betraying him."

"Later."

"And stayed silent."

"Yes."

"Why?"

"Because I was afraid he'd kill me."

Meline's eyes hardened.

"You didn't know him very well."

Marco laughed bitterly.

"Maybe I knew him too well then."

She leaned forward.

"You took forty thousand dollars."

"I still have it."

"I know."

"I want you to have it."

"No."

"It's yours."

"No."

"He meant it for you."

"And you stole it."

Marco closed his eyes.

"Yes."

Meline stood.

"Donate it."

"Where?"

"Women who need to disappear from dangerous men."

Marco looked up.

Meline's expression was calm.

"At least let one thing you stole become useful."

He nodded.

She left without forgiving him.

Outside, Jonathan waited.

"How was it?"

"Over."

He understood.

They walked toward the car.

Meline reached for his hand.

This time Jonathan closed his fingers around hers.

At home that night, Teresa watched Daniel while Jonathan cooked.

Badly.

Meline sat on the counter.

"What are you making?"

"Pasta."

"That is not pasta."

"It will become pasta."

"The water isn't boiling."

Jonathan turned.

"Why aren't you helping?"

"You've had thirty-seven years."

He laughed.

Then grew serious.

"Meline."

"What?"

"I love you."

Her smile faded.

Jonathan continued quickly.

"You don't have to answer."

She watched him.

"I know."

"I've loved you the entire time."

"I know."

"I just loved my certainty more."

That hurt.

Because it was true.

Meline slid off the counter.

She stood in front of him.

"I love you too."

Jonathan stopped breathing.

"But."

He smiled faintly.

"There's always a but."

"But I'm not coming back to the life we had."

"I don't want that life."

"I'm not becoming Mrs. Moretti and disappearing into your house."

"Okay."

"My business remains mine."

"Okay."

"Daniel grows up knowing my family too."

"Okay."

She narrowed her eyes.

"Stop saying okay so quickly."

Jonathan laughed.

"What do you want me to say?"

"Argue a little. It's unsettling."

"No."

Meline smiled.

Then kissed him.

May you like

For the first time, it felt less like recovering the past.

More like beginning something they had never known how to build before.
