Chapter 12 - The Reckoning in the Basement

The four armed security officers moved into the lab with tactical speed, fanning out around the central stainless-steel counter. Julian Vance rushed forward, his eyes wild with desperation, reaching out to grab the physical printouts as they slid out of the laser printer.
“Don't touch those machines!” Dr. Evelyn Reed roared, stepping boldly between Julian and the mass spectrometer, holding a heavy glass volumetric flask like a weapon. “You touch one piece of equipment in this laboratory, Vance, and I will personally file federal obstruction charges against you before the sun sets!”
“Shut up, Evelyn!” Julian snarled, snatching the fresh paper printout from the tray. He looked down at the header: `FORENSIC TOXICOLOGY REPORT - APX-709 POSITIVE IDENTIFICATION`.
Julian’s face turned ghostly white. His hands began to shake violently as he read the data. “Dad... look at this,” he stammered, handing the page to Chief Vance. “She ran the full spectrum. It’s... it’s a direct match.”
Chief Vance scanned the document, his jaw tightening into a hard, cruel line. He looked up from the page, his eyes locking onto me and Evelyn. The mask of a respected hospital administrator had completely slipped, revealing the ruthless, corrupt fixer beneath.
“This report never leaves this room,” Chief Vance said flatly, turning to his lead officer. “Wipe the hard drives on these workstations. Erase the local server logs for Basement Two from the security hub. And collect all physical vials.”
“You can’t wipe the server logs, Donald,” Evelyn said, a terrifyingly calm smile spreading across her face. “You’re about ten seconds too late.”
Chief Vance froze. “What did you say?”
Evelyn pointed a gloved finger at the main monitor. A small progress bar had just reached one hundred percent:
`ENCRYPTED TRANSMISSION COMPLETE.`
`RECIPIENTS: U.S. FOOD AND DRUG ADMINISTRATION (CRIMINAL INVESTIGATIONS DIVISION), STATE ATTORNEY GENERAL MEDICAL FRAUD UNIT, ST. JUDE'S BOARD OF TRUSTEES CHAIRPERSON.`
“The moment that mass spectrometer verified the chemical structure of APX-709,” Evelyn explained smoothly, leaning against the counter, “my automated lab protocol automatically transmitted the sealed forensic report to federal regulatory authorities and the state prosecutor’s office. It is currently sitting in the inbox of the Assistant United States Attorney.”
Julian let out a strangled, pathetic gasp, dropping his clipboard onto the floor. “Dad... oh God... the federal authorities? We’re going to prison!”
“Shut up, Julian!” Chief Vance barked, though a flash of pure panic danced in his own eyes. He turned back to the lead security officer. “Seize their phones! Lock the doors from the outside! We need time to clear the clinical trial files from the Apex wing before federal agents arrive!”
“Nobody is locking any doors,” a sharp, commanding female voice rang out from the hallway.
Everyone in the room turned.
Standing in the doorway was Dr. Margaret Miller, accompanied by two uniformed officers from the Metropolitan Police Department and the hospital’s General Legal Counsel, Arthur Pendelton.
Dr. Miller looked furious. Her scrub coat was open, her eyes blazing with absolute, unyielding rage.
“Dr. Miller?” Julian gasped, taking a step backward.
“I managed to conclude that ridiculous administrative board meeting twenty minutes early, Donald,” Dr. Miller said, her voice dripping with ice as she walked into the lab. “Once Mr. Pendelton showed me the encrypted federal alert that just popped up on the hospital system, I invited these city police officers to join us.”
Chief Vance tried to recover his composure, stepping forward with his hands out. “Margaret, listen to me. This is a complex intellectual property dispute regarding proprietary drug trials—’
“Shut your mouth, Donald!” Dr. Miller cut him off with a thunderous shout that echoed through the concrete room. “You and your pathetic son injected an unauthorized, toxic experimental compound into an eight-year-old orphan! You forged intake records, you abused hospital security, and you attempted to perform an unnecessary surgical procedure on my patient to destroy physical evidence!”
She turned to the two Metropolitan Police officers. “Officers, as Chief of Pediatric Surgery, I am filing formal criminal complaints against Donald Vance and Julian Vance for medical battery, child endangerment, fraud, and evidence tampering. Arrest them.”
The police officers didn't hesitate. They pulled out pair after pair of steel handcuffs.
“Wait! You can’t arrest me!” Julian screamed, trying to pull away as an officer grabbed his arms and twisted them behind his back. “It was Apex BioTech! They paid me fifty thousand dollars to run the in-vivo injection test! They promised it was safe!”
“Save it for your public defender, Doctor,” the police officer growled, snapping the cuffs tightly around Julian’s wrists.
Chief Donald Vance stood rigid as the second officer stepped behind him, clicking the steel cuffs onto his wrists as well. He didn't say a word, but his eyes glared at me with pure, poisonous hatred.
Dr. Miller walked over to me, placing her hands firmly on my shoulders. “Sarah... are you alright?”
May you like
“I’m fine, Dr. Miller,” I said, tears of relief finally spilling over my eyelashes. “But Leo... and Rex! They’re still locked in Room 312! Animal Control was trying to tranquilize Rex!”
Dr. Miller’s eyes narrowed. “Not on my watch. Let’s go.”
