Chapter 3 - The DNA Envelope Under the Christmas Tree

The DNA results arrived two mornings later.

Nathan refused to open the envelope in his office. He carried it downstairs and sat beside Lily beneath the Christmas tree.

“Whatever this says,” he told her, “you didn’t do anything wrong.”

Lily twisted a ribbon around her finger.

“What if I’m not yours?”

“Then you still need people.”

“What if I am?”

Nathan looked at her.

“Then I missed eight years.”

He opened the envelope.

Probability of paternity: 99.998 percent.

Nathan closed his eyes.

Lily whispered, “Is that good?”

He pulled her into his arms.

For several seconds he could not speak.

“It means I’m your father.”

Lily started crying first.

Nathan followed.

Vanessa stood on the staircase with one hand gripping the banister.

By lunch, Nathan had called attorneys. By afternoon, he had established emergency guardianship. By dinner, Vanessa had learned Lily would inherit a protected share of the Cole family trust.

That evening a package arrived without a return address.

Inside was a child’s red mitten.

Lily recognized it.

“Mama kept the other one.”

Nathan searched the box and found a note.

SARAH KEPT WHAT WASN’T HERS. THE GIRL WILL RETURN IT.

Nathan called security.

Vanessa called it a cruel prank.

Mae, who had been invited to stay through Christmas, disagreed.

“Pranks ask for attention,” she said. “Threats ask for obedience.”

Nathan looked at her with new respect.

The next day Lily accompanied Mrs. Bell to a Christmas market on the estate grounds. A man in a delivery uniform approached from behind a wreath display.

“You’re Sarah’s girl?”

Lily froze.

He reached for her backpack.

Mrs. Bell screamed.

Security tackled him before he could pull Lily away. The encounter was frightening and forceful but brief; Lily was physically unharmed.

Nathan arrived seconds later and nearly lost control when he saw Lily shaking.

“Who sent you?” he demanded.

The man laughed through a split lip.

“You still don’t know what Sarah stole.”

Nathan grabbed his coat.

A security officer pulled him back.

Lily cried, “Dad!”

The word stopped Nathan instantly.

Everyone heard it.

Nathan turned toward her.

She had never called him that before.

He dropped to one knee.

“I’m here.”

The detained man was identified as Calvin Rusk, a former Cole Aerospace security contractor fired seven years earlier.

Seven years.

Almost exactly when Sarah disappeared.

Police searched his van.

They found duct tape, fake identification, and a photograph of Sarah standing beside Nathan at a company Christmas party nine years earlier.
