Chapter 13 - THE NIGHT THE BABY CAME EARLY

The drive to the hospital was quieter than Elena expected. She had imagined that labor would arrive like a storm, all shouting and urgency, but the real fear settled into pauses between Rosa's calm questions and the rhythm of the road beneath the car. Elena was only about thirty-five weeks pregnant. She knew many babies born at that stage did well, but knowledge did nothing to stop her wondering whether the weeks of stress had hurt her daughter.

Rosa rode beside her and timed each contraction. Alessandro followed in a separate vehicle. He had offered to drive Elena himself, but she had chosen the woman who had brought soup when the world felt unsafe. She noticed, with a faint sense of surprise, that Alessandro had accepted her decision without pretending to be wounded by it.

At the hospital, clinicians examined Elena and explained what they were monitoring. The next several hours moved in a blur of assessments, changing positions, sips of water, and a nurse whose practical kindness anchored Elena more effectively than any speech. Nora checked in briefly to assure her that the investigation could wait. Javier sent a short voice message saying that he loved her and would be there if she wanted him. Elena listened once, then saved it for later.

Alessandro remained in the waiting area until Rosa asked whether Elena would like him inside. Elena hesitated. He had become someone she looked for when a difficult day ended, and that frightened her in a different way from Grant's threats. She had built her independence so carefully that the idea of letting another person close felt like stepping onto a bridge she couldn't see.

"Tell him he can come in," she said. "But I'm not promising to be pleasant."

He entered carrying nothing except a bottle of water and a phone charger. No flowers, no expensive gifts, no performance. He sat in the chair she indicated and asked whether she wanted him to talk or remain quiet. She chose quiet. Every so often, she reached for his hand. He never took hers first.

Hours later, Elena gave birth to a small, furious baby girl who announced herself with a cry that made everyone in the room laugh from relief. The medical team assessed her and arranged for additional monitoring because she had arrived early. Elena held her daughter briefly before the staff took the baby to the neonatal unit for observation. The separation hurt more than she expected, even though the nurses explained where the baby was going and kept her informed.

"What's her name?" Rosa asked when Elena was settled.

Elena looked at the tiny knitted blanket folded at the end of the bed. She had considered dozens of names while moving from motel to motel, always imagining she would be alone when the time came. Now she had a room full of people who respected her choices and a child who already seemed determined to make herself heard.

"Sofia," she said. "Sofia Elena Torres."

Alessandro smiled. "That's a strong name."

"She'll have to decide what kind of person it belongs to," Elena replied.

He stayed long enough to help Rosa organize the calls Elena wanted made, then left them to rest. He did not post an announcement, contact the press, or make any sentimental claim over a child who was not his. Before he went, he said simply, "I'm proud of you." Elena watched the door close and allowed herself to believe he meant it without expecting anything in return.

The following morning, Maya sent a video of Midnight standing at the lower paddock fence in the early sun. His mane lifted in the breeze, and his ears tilted forward at the sound of her voice behind the camera. Elena showed the video to Sofia through the clear side of the bassinet when the nurses allowed her to visit. "That's the horse who got us noticed," she whispered. "Neither of us had any idea what would happen next."

Javier arrived from Oregon several days later with his care team's agreement and a travel plan. He stood in the hospital doorway holding a stuffed horse and looking terrified. Elena invited him in. Their first embrace was awkward; too much history stood between them for an easy reunion. But when Javier looked down at Sofia, his eyes filled with something Elena remembered from childhood.

"She's beautiful," he said.

"She is." Elena placed the baby gently in his arms after asking him to sit. "And if you're going to be her grandfather, you show up. Every birthday. Every ordinary Tuesday you promise. You don't disappear because you're afraid."

Javier looked directly at her. "I understand."

It was not forgiveness, but it was a door Elena was willing to leave unlocked.

While she recovered, the investigation continued. Independent records showed that several of the allegedly transferred horses had been sold without proper foundation authorization. Some had been recovered through cooperation with receiving farms; others remained unaccounted for. Grant faced allegations connected to Elena's abduction and threats, while the financial findings were being assessed separately. Victor had retained attorneys and denied wrongdoing. Nora updated Elena in brief, factual calls, never pretending a dramatic confession would replace the work ahead.

On the fourth evening, Alessandro came to visit after Elena had finished feeding Sofia. He sat beside the window while sunset moved across the hospital wall. When Elena asked why he looked nervous, he gave a rueful smile.

"Because I'm about to say something, and for once I can't solve the uncertainty by planning it. I care about you, Elena. Not because you calmed Midnight. Not because I admire what you've survived. I care about who you are when we're just sitting here talking."

Elena looked down at Sofia's sleeping face. "I'm not ready to make promises about us."

"I'm not asking for one."

"And I'm not working for you forever."

"I hope you don't have to work for anyone who can take away your choices."

May you like

She considered him for a long moment, then offered her free hand. He took it, and they watched the last light leave the window without trying to name what came next.
