Chapter 8 - Adrian Came for Me Instead of Luca

Fear makes ordinary things sinister.
A parked car.
A stranger in a grocery store.
A phone that rings once and stops.
For six days, Adrian did nothing.
That was worse.
Security doubled.
I hated it.
I also stopped pretending I did not need it.
Then I received an email from my former hospital.
Patient request regarding Nora Hale. Urgent.
I called.
A nurse I knew answered.
“There’s a woman here asking for you.”
“Who?”
“She won’t say.”
“Why me?”
“She says you treated her seven years ago.”
Impossible.
I left emergency medicine three years earlier.
“Name?”
“She says Maria.”
Something in my chest tightened.
Maria.
A woman Evan had treated.
The nurse who disappeared had once told me Maria was terrified of him.
I had forgotten.
Or forced myself to.
“Put her on.”
A weak voice came through.
“Nora?”
“Yes.”
“He found me.”
My hands went cold.
“Evan?”
“No.”
Pause.
“The men asking about you.”
Adrian.
I stood.
“Where are you?”
The line cut.
Rafael traced the call.
Denver.
I insisted on going.
Luca refused.
We fought.
Real fight.
“You are not going.”
“You don’t get to decide.”
“She’s bait.”
“Probably.”
“That makes it worse.”
“It makes it my responsibility to understand why.”
“No.”
I stared.
“You said stay beside you while you choose differently.”
“Yes.”
“That works both ways.”
His jaw tightened.
“You want me to let you walk into a trap?”
“I want you to trust me not to be stupid.”
“You followed me into my own funeral.”
“Bad example.”
Rafael left the room.
Coward.
Eventually we compromised.
Denver.
Federal agents.
Hospital secured.
Maria existed.
She was real.
She had been hiding for years.
But Adrian had found her through Evan’s old records.
Why?
Because he researched me.
My vulnerabilities.
My guilt.
My past.
Exactly what abusers do.
Maria handed me an envelope.
“A man gave me this.”
Inside was a photograph.
Evan.
Alive.
Outside prison.
My heart stopped.
“He was released?”
Early.
Appeal.
Legal technicality.
Nobody notified me because I was no longer protected under the original order.
Adrian found him.
The next photograph showed Evan meeting Dominic.
My stomach turned.
Different monsters.
Same language.
Control.
Luca stood beside me.
Silent.
I appreciated that.
Maria whispered:
“They asked him how to make you come alone.”
I felt sick.
Evan knew.
Of course he knew.
He had spent years training me.
Which doors I would open.
Which guilt would move me.
Which people I would risk myself for.
Then my phone rang.
Unknown.
I answered.
Evan.
“Nora.”
Seven years disappeared.
My body remembered before my mind did.
My hands went cold.
Luca saw.
He reached for my hand.
Did not take the phone.
Did not decide for me.
Just held my fingers.
Evan said:
“You always did collect damaged people.”
I looked at Luca.
He heard.
“Where are you?”
Evan laughed.
“Still practical.”
“What do you want?”
“To see you.”
“No.”
“You don’t mean that.”
“Yes.”
“You owe me.”
There it was.
Old language.
Old cage.
I almost became the woman who believed it.
Almost.
Then I said:
“No.”
Silence.
“You ruined my life.”
“No.”
“You testified.”
“Yes.”
“You turned everyone against me.”
“You did that.”
His breathing changed.
Anger.
Control slipping.
“I can make this worse.”
“I know.”
“Your Mafia boyfriend can’t protect everyone.”
Luca’s jaw tightened.
I squeezed his hand.
He stayed silent.
I said:
“I don’t need him to.”
Evan stopped.
That line mattered.
Not because Luca was weak.
Because I was no longer asking another powerful man to replace the first.
“I survived you before I knew how strong I was.”
My voice steadied.
“Imagine what happens now.”
I ended the call.
My knees nearly gave out.
Luca caught me.
Not dramatically.
Just enough.
“You okay?”
“No.”
“Good answer.”
I laughed shakily.
Then Rafael entered.
“We got the trace.”
“Where?”
He looked at Luca.
“Colorado.”
My cabin.
Of course.
Adrian had built everything around returning us to the mountain.
The place where Luca should have died.
The place where I rebuilt my life.
He wanted symbolism.
Men like him loved theater.
Luca looked at me.
“No.”
I already knew what he meant.
May you like
I answered:
“Yes.”
