Chapter 20 - GEMMA LEAVES MORETTI HOUSE

Gemma resigned again at thirty-eight.
This time she meant it.
She had been offered operations director at an independent luxury hotel group in Chicago.
No Moretti ownership.
Bigger role.
She wanted it.
I congratulated her.
Lucy cried.
At twenty? Let's align. If Lucy was 5 at start, 12-13 years later she'd be 17-18. Gemma 26 -> 38. Great.
Then Lucy asked:
“Can’t you pay her more?”
I smiled.
“She’s leaving because she wants the job.”
“Oh.”
There.
Money is not retention magic.
Then Gemma’s farewell dinner.
No maid uniform.
No fairy-tale narrative.
Staff.
Managers.
Ophelia attended because Gemma invited her.
That surprised everyone.
Then Ophelia gave a short toast:
“Gemma once did her job while I failed mine.”
No more.
Good.
Gemma replied:
“And then we both had to keep working afterward.”
Better.
Then she left.
No permanent household savior.
Lucy still had asthma.
Still had family.
Still safe.
Then at college orientation Lucy forgot her inhaler in the hotel.
I panicked when she texted.
She solved it.
Local pharmacy transfer with doctor office.
No emergency.
Adult problem.
Then she called:
“You would have sent a helicopter.”
“I do not own a helicopter.”
“You would have rented one.”
Maybe.
Then she chose environmental engineering as major.
Too symbolic? Could be because building? Perhaps not. Better she studied graphic design? User likes healed identity beyond trauma. Let's choose veterinary? We've used that. Architecture? Could be independent. Let's choose marine biology? Let's make she studies urban planning? Hmm. We want identity beyond asthma. She becomes pastry chef? Cake not hook. Maybe industrial design. Let's choose art conservation / historic preservation could tie house too much. Better "economics and public policy" maybe. Let's choose documentary photography? No.
Let's make Lucy studies elementary education.
She likes children.
Nothing to do with lungs or buildings.
Good.
Ophelia expected law.
I expected business.
Lucy chose education.
No trust penalty.
No family disappointment allowed? They can have feelings but not control.
Then Ophelia said:
“You’ll be wonderful.”
No:
But the family company.
Progress.
Then Moretti House faced a labor dispute with Altura.
Housekeeping staff sought schedule changes and wage adjustments.
Gemma, now outside company, was not involved.
Professional management negotiated.
Union? Could be. Not needed.
The property did not require family matriarch to solve every conflict.
Then one board member proposed Ophelia as informal mediator because staff respected her.
She declined.
“Use HR.”
Perfect.
Then the west wing hosted a medical charity conference.
Irony.
Lucy heard.
“No way.”
I laughed.
Then the conference organizers requested fragrance-free spaces for some attendees.
Property team accommodated.

No one called them dramatic.
That tiny policy change felt like history correcting itself without ceremony.
