Chapter 5 - The Ash ProjectTwo hours later, the rumble of the Harley died down inside an abandoned warehouse nestled deep within a pine forest. This was Lucas’s contingency nest—a place where he kept weapons and supplies for the day the past finally knocked on his door. Tonight, that door had been kicked off its hinges.

Lucas dismounted, his body soaked to the bone. He lit a hurricane lantern, its amber light dancing eerily across the rusted corrugated walls. Emily sat on a wooden crate, her hands wrapped tightly around her frail shoulders.

Lucas walked over and knelt on one knee to meet her eyes. He slipped off his heavy, wet leather vest and draped it over her trembling frame.

“Now,” Lucas’s voice was deep and stern, but thick with exhaustion. “Tell me. How did your mother die? And what did that bastard mean out there?”

Emily looked up at him, her eyes red and rimmed with tears. She unzipped her jacket, revealing a strange scar just above her right collarbone. It wasn't from a knife or a bullet. It was a perfect sequence of concentric circles with tiny alphanumeric characters tattooed over them—a biological barcode.

“Mom said… you and her were part of the Ash Project,” Emily whispered, her voice competing with the rhythmic drumming of rain on the tin roof. “The Sons of Ash weren't just a regular motorcycle club. You were test subjects for a military serum. A serum designed to enhance reflexes and endurance… but it destroyed the mind.”

Lucas clenched his fists. The dark memories he had spent ten years burying rushed back like a tidal wave. The unprovoked rages. The nights where brothers slaughtered brothers in fits of uncontrollable psychosis. That was why he fled. That was why he swore never to touch a weapon again.

“The serum… it had a side effect,” Emily choked out, tears spilling over. “It’s hereditary. Mom said her body couldn't take it, and it wore her out. But me… I inherited it from both sides. I’m the only viable specimen that survived.”

Lucas felt the air leave his lungs. He took a step back, staring at the little girl in horror.

“What did you say? From both sides?”

“Helena was my mother,” Emily said, looking directly into his eyes. “And you… Lucas… you’re my father.”

An absolute, crushing silence fell over the warehouse. Every scattered piece in Lucas’s mind slammed into place. The old photo. Helena's frantic protection. And the trench-coated man’s parting words: “She told you to protect her from you.”

Helena hadn't been afraid of the enemy finding Emily. She was terrified that as Emily grew, the venom in her blood would turn her into a mindless apex predator—just like the Lucas of old. She had sent the girl here because Lucas, the only man to ever tame the madness, was the only one who could teach her how to survive it. Or, if necessary, the only one who could end it.
