Chương 7

“Did she find something?”
Elliot nodded.
“She found records.”
“What records?”
“I don’t know.”
Mara stared.
“You don’t know?”
“Not anymore.”
The answer was strange.
“Not anymore?”
Elliot looked down.
“After she died, some of her files disappeared.”
“Disappeared?”
“Yes.”
“From where?”
“My office.”
Nobody spoke.
Mara felt the pieces moving but refusing to connect.
“My mother was investigating your company.”
“Yes.”
“Adrian was investigating your company.”
“Yes.”
“Both of them found something.”
“Yes.”
“And both times things went wrong.”
Elliot closed his eyes.
“Yes.”
The honesty frightened her more than denial.
Because denial gave her something to fight.
Truth gave her nowhere to stand.
Daniel moved away from the doorway.
“I should leave.”
Mara looked at him.
“No.”
He stopped.
“You’re going to explain something first.”
Daniel shook his head.
“I don’t think you understand the situation.”
She almost laughed.
“Everyone keeps saying that.”
His expression changed.
“Mara.”
“No.”
She stepped closer.
“You don’t get to use that sentence anymore.”
Daniel looked at the floor.
For once, he had no immediate response.
“Why did you marry me?”
The question surprised him.
“What?”
“Why?”
Daniel looked confused.
“Because I loved you.”
She watched him.
Maybe once that had been true.
That was the worst part.
She did not need him to have been pretending from the beginning.
People could love someone and still destroy them.
People could need someone and still hurt them.
“Then why did you let me get close to this?”
Daniel swallowed.
“I thought I could fix it.”
Mara waited.
“There it is.”
“What?”
“The same thing my father said.”
Elliot looked away.
Daniel noticed.
“That’s what this is really about, isn’t it?”
Mara frowned.
“What?”
“You’re angry because you found out we both made decisions without you.”
The accuracy of the statement made her pause.
She hated that.
Because even Daniel could accidentally tell the truth.
“Yes,” she said.
Her voice became quieter.
“I’m angry because everyone decided I was too fragile to handle reality.”
Daniel’s expression softened.
“Mara.”
“No.”
She shook her head.
“I am carrying a child, not made of glass.”
The room went silent.
Elliot looked at her.
Daniel looked at her.
And for the first time, she realized she was not asking them to save her.
She was asking them to stop hiding things.
A sound came from outside.
A car engine.
Everyone turned.
The security guard near the entrance spoke into his radio.
Then he walked quickly toward the house.
“Mr. Whitmore.”
Elliot stood.
“What?”
“There’s a vehicle at the gate.”
“Whose?”
The guard hesitated.
“It’s registered to Adrian Vale.”
Mara felt her heartbeat increase.
“Then let him in.”
Elliot looked at her.
“No.”
She stared.
“Why?”
“Because Adrian never arrives anywhere without a reason.”
Daniel moved toward the window.
Then he stopped.
His face changed.
“What?”
Mara followed his eyes.
A second vehicle had stopped behind Adrian’s car.
Not entering.
Waiting.
Daniel whispered.
“He found us.”
Elliot looked at him.
“Who?”
Daniel did not answer.
He only watched the vehicle outside.
The same fear returned.
Not the fear of being exposed.
The fear of someone coming closer.
The fear of someone who had been patient for a very long time.
Mara moved toward the window.
Outside the gate, Adrian stepped out of his car.
He looked older than she remembered.
Tired.
Careful.
But alive.
Then the driver of the second vehicle opened his door.
A man stepped out.
Mara had never met him.
But Daniel had.
And Daniel’s face told her everything.
“That’s Marcus,” he whispered.
Marcus Reed stood beyond the gate, looking toward the house.
And somehow, even from a distance, Mara knew he was not there to talk.
Marcus Reed stood beyond the gate, looking toward the house.
And somehow, even from a distance, Mara knew he was not there to talk.
The security guard moved toward the entrance, but Elliot raised a hand.
“Wait.”
Nobody understood the hesitation.
Not the guard.
Not Daniel.
Not even Mara.
But she saw something in her father’s face that she had never seen before.
Recognition mixed with regret.
Like a person seeing a chapter of his life return after years of pretending it had ended.
Adrian remained beside his car, looking toward the house.
He did not wave.
He did not call out.
He simply waited.
That was somehow more unsettling.
People who came to threaten usually wanted to be heard.
People who came because they had nothing left to lose were often quieter.
Daniel stepped away from the window.
“We need to leave.”
Mara turned.
“You just said he found us.”
“Yes.”
“Then why are you leaving?”
“Because you don’t understand Marcus.”
The anger returned immediately.
Mara stared at him.
“You cannot keep saying that.”
Daniel looked at her.
“I’m trying to keep you alive.”
The sentence was so serious that for a moment nobody spoke.
Then Elliot moved closer.
“Explain.”
Daniel looked toward the window again.
“Marcus doesn’t threaten people.”
“What does he do?” Mara asked.
Daniel swallowed.
“He removes problems.”
The words were simple.
That made them worse.
Elliot reached for his phone.
“I’m calling the police.”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
Mara looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because if Marcus wanted to hurt us, the police showing up would not stop him.”
“That sounds convenient,” Elliot said.
Daniel looked at him.
“You think I’m protecting myself.”
“Aren’t you?”
Daniel did not answer.
The silence became another confession.
Mara watched him carefully.
For years, she had mistaken confidence for strength.
Daniel had always walked into rooms like he belonged there.
He knew what to say.
He knew who to flatter.
He knew how to make people believe he was calm.
But now he looked like someone who had spent years running from a shadow and finally saw it standing in front of him.
The security guard returned.
“Mr. Whitmore.”
Elliot turned.
“Adrian wants to come inside.”
“No.”
Mara looked at her father.
“You’re not letting him in?”
May you like
“Not until I know why he brought Marcus here.”
A knock sounded from the front gate.
