Chapter 13

Vittorio did not ask where the men were.
He asked who wanted the war.
Margaret smiled.
“That’s the first intelligent question you've asked tonight.”
Her arrogance returned completely.
David stared at her.
“You planned this without Calder?”
“Lucian became sentimental.”
Lucian’s face hardened.
Margaret continued.
“Peace makes men soft.”
She looked at Vittorio.
“Look at you.”
A cruel smile.
“Standing there because your daughter told you not to hit someone.”
Vittorio’s eyes narrowed.
Margaret mistook restraint for weakness.
Again.
The breakaway crew belonged to Anton Voss.
A former Calder lieutenant driven out after refusing the peace twelve years earlier.
Margaret had been feeding him information for months.
Gate schedules.
Council nights.
David’s challenge.
She wanted Voss men to arrive during the leadership vote.
If Vittorio stayed in control, they would strike his men.
If David took the chair, David would “repel” them publicly and immediately look strong.
David stared at his mother.
“You were going to stage an attack.”
Margaret shrugged.
“A controlled one.”
Sarah almost laughed from disbelief.
“You people love that word.”
Margaret looked at her.
Sarah continued.
“Controlled fear.”
“Controlled violence.”
“Controlled wives.”
“Controlled children.”
Her eyes hardened.
“It always means somebody weaker pays for your plan.”
Margaret's mouth tightened.
David looked toward Sarah.
The accusation belonged to him too.
He knew it.
Lucian stepped forward.
“Voss won't move under my colors once I tell him I know.”
Margaret smiled.
“He doesn't care what you know.”
Lucian’s eyes narrowed.
“He cares whether his men survive.”
That shifted the room.
Vittorio looked toward his security chief.
One quiet order.
The north gate stayed closed.
Senior men loyal to the three wavering capos moved to reinforce the estate.
No panic.
No detailed battle plan.
Just authority.
Margaret watched.
Her smile slowly disappeared.
The war she hoped to trigger needed confusion.
Vittorio refused to provide it.
Then David spoke.
“I know where Voss is waiting.”
Margaret turned.
Her eyes became dangerous.
“Don't.”
David looked at her.
“You told me everything?”
A bitter smile.
“Apparently not.”
Margaret’s voice dropped.
“Remember who gave you your life.”
David stared.
“You gave me a lie.”
“I gave you purpose.”
“You gave me your hatred.”
Her eyes flashed.
“And you used it beautifully until a woman made you weak.”
Sarah looked away.
David flinched.
Margaret continued.
“Look at you.”
“Ready to betray your own mother because Sarah cried hard enough.”
David stepped toward her.
His voice became quiet.
“No.”
A pause.
“I’m betraying you because I finally know what loyalty to you costs everybody else.”
Margaret’s smile vanished.
David gave Vittorio the location where Voss’s men were waiting.
Margaret stared at her son.
For the first time all night, she looked genuinely wounded.
Then she turned it into cruelty.
“Your father would be ashamed.”
David’s eyes hardened.
“No.”
He glanced toward Gabriel’s recorder.
“For the first time, I think he wouldn't.”
Power left Margaret’s face.
Not all of it.
Enough.
Then Lucian received a call.
His expression changed.
He looked toward Vittorio.
“Voss is pulling back.”
Relief moved through the room.
But Lucian continued.
“One man didn't.”
Vittorio’s eyes narrowed.
“Who?”
Lucian looked toward Sarah.
“A driver Margaret hired.”
Sarah’s face went pale.
May you like
The driver was already outside the estate.
Waiting for Emma.
