Chapter 11 - The Gala Where Everyone Laughed Again

Jones Financial had never looked more beautiful.
Crystal chandeliers.
Champagne towers.
Three hundred guests.
Investors.
Bankers.
Politicians.
People who had attended Rebecca Jones’s funeral and later forgotten her daughter existed.
Adelaide entered alone.
Whispers began.
The scar was visible.
So were her glasses.
The silver dress Chloe selected fit perfectly.
Not because it transformed Adelaide.
Because it did not.
She still looked exactly like herself.
Only impossible to overlook.
Victor Kane waited near the stage.
He smiled.
“Miss Jones.”
“Mr. Kane.”
“I heard Moretti abandoned you.”
News traveled quickly when carefully planted.
Adelaide lowered her gaze.
“It didn’t work.”
“What?”
“The arrangement.”
Kane touched her arm sympathetically.
She resisted the urge to recoil.
“Powerful men can be cruel.”
“So can respectable ones.”
His smile tightened.
“Your father is finished.”
“I know.”
“Sell me the company.”
“I don’t own it.”
“You will.”
Rockford had quietly transferred his voting interest to Adelaide that afternoon.
Kane did not know.
“Your father trusts you now?”
“No.”
Adelaide smiled faintly.
“He finally stopped trusting himself.”
Across the ballroom, Chloe appeared beside Luca Moretti.
Adelaide’s pulse changed.
That was not part of the plan.
Luca had been missing.
Now he walked openly through the gala in a tuxedo.
Chloe’s smile looked natural.
Too natural.
Adelaide touched her earpiece.
“Mateo.”
No answer.
Static.
Something was wrong.
Kane noticed her distraction.
“Nervous?”
“No.”
She looked toward Chloe again.
Her sister raised one champagne glass.
Then deliberately dropped it.
It shattered.
Signal.
Danger.
The ballroom lights dimmed for the scheduled presentation.
Adelaide moved toward the stage.
Kane followed.
Luca disappeared through a side door.
Mateo still did not answer.
Adelaide’s instincts screamed.
But hundreds of people were watching.
She stepped to the microphone.
“Good evening.”
The room quieted.
“My name is Adelaide Jones.”
Some people knew.
Many did not.
“For years, I worked at Jones Financial in a basement office without a title.”
Uneasy laughter.
“Apparently that made me invisible.”
Kane’s smile began fading.
Adelaide continued.
“Visibility is overrated.”
The screens behind her changed.
Financial diagrams appeared.
Bellweather.
Kane Strategic.
Vittorio Moretti.
Duvall.
Evelyn.
Every transaction.
Every shell company.
Kane stood.
“What is this?”
Adelaide looked directly at him.
“An audit.”
Doors opened.
Federal agents entered.
Guests gasped.
Kane did not panic.
Instead, he smiled.
“Impressive.”
Then he clapped.
Slowly.
“You have transfers.”
“Yes.”
“You have theories.”
“We have more.”
A recording played.
Kane’s own voice:
Your mother said things like that.
It got her killed.
The ballroom erupted.
Kane’s face changed.
Barely.
Then Adelaide saw Luca on the balcony.
He held Mateo at gunpoint.
Everything stopped.
Mateo’s hands were behind his head.
Blood marked his temple.
Kane smiled.
“You should have taken the deal.”
Guests began screaming.
Federal agents drew weapons.
Luca shouted, “Nobody moves!”
Adelaide looked at Mateo.
He looked back.
Calm.
Too calm.
Kane walked toward the stage.
“You think evidence matters if nobody survives to authenticate it?”
Adelaide’s heart hammered.
Then Chloe appeared behind Luca.
She hit him with a champagne bottle.
It shattered against his shoulder.
Mateo moved instantly.
The gun slid across the balcony.
Security rushed.
Luca fell.
Chloe screamed.
Mateo grabbed her before she went over the railing.
The entire ballroom watched.
Kane ran.
Rockford stepped into his path.
For once in his life, Adelaide’s father did not move aside.
Kane punched him.
Rockford fell.
But the delay was enough.
Agents tackled Kane.
Adelaide stood at the microphone, shaking.
Mateo descended the staircase.
Their eyes met.
He moved toward her.
But he stopped several feet away.
Waited.
Choice.
Always choice now.
Adelaide crossed the remaining distance herself.
She touched the cut on his forehead.
“You’re bleeding.”
“So are several expensive bottles of champagne.”
She laughed through tears.
Chloe appeared.
“I saved the mafia boss.”
Mateo looked at her.
“You assaulted my cousin with French champagne.”
“It was technically domestic.”
Rockford sat against a table holding his bleeding nose.
Adelaide approached him.
He looked up.
“I’m sorry.”
“I know.”
“Did we win?”
She looked around.
Kane handcuffed.
Luca arrested.
Federal agents gathering evidence.
The screens still displaying her work.
“No.”
Rockford frowned.
Adelaide looked toward Mateo.
“We told the truth.”
Then back at her father.
“That’s better.”
Outside, cameras had already gathered.
The story would explode by morning.
Send the ugly one.
That phrase had once been a joke in a drawing room.
By sunrise, everyone who laughed would know the daughter they dismissed had exposed an empire.
But Adelaide’s story was not finished.
Because one final file recovered from Luca’s phone contained a name she never expected to see.
Mateo Moretti.
And beside it:
AUTHORIZED SUCCESSOR — VITTORIO NETWORK.
Adelaide stared at the screen.
Then at the man she loved.
The last question was the hardest.
May you like
Had Mateo truly escaped his family’s darkness?
Or had he always intended to inherit it?
