Chapter 17 - A Flame from the Ashes

As the months turned into a year, my connection with Julian grew naturally, built on a foundation of mutual respect, shared passion for architecture, and absolute honesty.

Unlike Barrett, who had always competed with me for the spotlight, Julian took genuine joy in my success. When I won the European Interior Architecture Prize in Milan, he was the first person standing in the front row, applauding with unbridled pride.

One evening, after working late on a major resort design for the Amalfi Coast, Julian brought two Italian take-out boxes and a bottle of Chianti to my private office terrace.

We sat under the starlit sky, eating pasta and laughing like two old friends.

"You know," Julian said, setting his glass down and looking at me with gentle intensity, "when I first took this job, people warned me that Mallory Romano was a ruthless dragon who ate contractors for breakfast."

I laughed, tossing my hair back. "And what did you find?"

Julian reached across the table, his fingers gently brushing mine. I didn't pull away. His touch was warm, comforting, and entirely safe.

"I found a woman who built an empire out of her own resilience," Julian whispered softly. "A woman who is as fierce as she is kind. And... a woman I've fallen completely in love with."

My heart skipped a beat—not with fear, but with a sudden, beautiful surge of joy.

"Julian..." I murmured softly.

"I know what you've been through, Mallory," Julian said gently, searching my eyes. "I know how deeply you were hurt, and I promise you, I will never ask you to shrink yourself for me. I don't want to own your light. I just want to stand beside you while you shine."

Tears of pure relief welled in my eyes. For ten years, I had believed that love required surrender, sacrifice, and pain. Standing before Julian, I finally understood what true love was supposed to feel like—an equal partnership built on trust and freedom.

I leaned in and pressed my lips gently against his. The kiss was sweet, warm, and deeply reassuring, melting away the last lingering shadows of my past.

When we pulled back, Julian smiled warmly, stroking my cheek.

"Is that a yes?" he whispered with a boyish grin.

"That's a yes," I smiled back, resting my head against his shoulder as we looked out at the city lights together.

For the first time in my life, I felt completely safe.
