Chapter 9 - Gregory's Deal

Every new answer made the previous lie look smaller. Gregory decides Victor will sacrifice him and turns over the emails that can break the takeover plan.

Gregory arrives at Sarah’s office with a lawyer and a drive containing messages he secretly copied.

In the middle of the gregory's deal mess, Sarah made me write one fact on a yellow legal pad: what happened, who witnessed it, and what could actually be proved. I had spent too much of my marriage arguing with feelings. This time the record would be stronger than anybody’s performance. I marked it in my notes as turning point 9.3.

I wrote down the time because I had stopped trusting memory to carry everything. The detail mattered in gregory's deal: people kept depending on confusion, and I was done giving it to them for free.

The emails describe a staged vendor panic, delayed receivables, and rumors meant to spook Reed Holdings lenders.

I walked through the house that evening thinking about gregory's deal. The rooms had not changed, but I had. I checked the alarm, looked in on Lily, and wrote down the next question before sleep could soften it. People had used my trust as camouflage once. They would not get the same advantage again. I marked it in my notes as turning point 9.6.

What bothered me was not only what had happened. It was how prepared everyone seemed for my reaction. Someone had predicted the questions, the shame, and the delay. That meant gregory's deal had been planned long before I saw it.

One message says custody pressure will make Emily easier to negotiate with.

Later, Lily asked why everyone kept whispering whenever gregory's deal came up. I told her the adults were trying to solve a problem without putting the problem on her shoulders. She considered that seriously, then said, “Good. My shoulders are small.” I laughed for the first time that day. I marked it in my notes as turning point 9.10.

Gregory identifies a board insider by initials but refuses to name the person until he has immunity.

Sarah built a separate timeline for that fact and labeled it with the chapter of our case that would later matter most: Gregory's Deal. Dates had become our defense against people who changed stories whenever the old version stopped helping them.

Emily realizes the person is someone who has known Lily since infancy.

Gregory cried when he mentioned his wife. I did not comfort him. “You were afraid Victor would ruin your family?” I asked. He nodded. “Then you chose mine instead.” He had no defense for that sentence.

I had spent 9 chapters of this nightmare learning the same lesson in different forms: cruelty was rarely just a temper. In our case it had bank accounts, calendars, access codes, favors, and people willing to call harm “strategy” when money was involved.

The evidence connected to gregory's deal looked small when reduced to one page, but small facts had become dangerous to the people lying to me. A timestamp could defeat a story. A bank transfer could expose a motive. A child’s plain sentence could ruin an adult’s carefully rehearsed excuse. I marked it in my notes as turning point 9.19.

Later that morning, I reviewed the gregory's deal evidence again with Sarah. We separated what we knew from what we suspected and wrote one unanswered question at the bottom of the page. Question 9.1: who gained the most from this specific lie? The answer changed from chapter to chapter, which was exactly why the larger scheme had survived so long. No single person appeared responsible for everything, yet the same small group kept benefiting whenever I doubted myself, whenever Daniel delayed, and whenever Lily was too frightened to speak.

Before bed, Lily asked a question connected to gregory's deal that no lawyer had thought to ask: “Why do grown-ups keep doing things they know are mean?” I told her some people care more about getting what they want than about the person standing in front of them. She considered that and said, “Then wanting something can make you stupid.” I kissed her forehead. “Sometimes it can make you cruel.” She nodded as if filing the answer away somewhere safer than the adults had filed theirs.
