Chapter 5 - The Christmas Hearing

Graham arrived at court wearing the same black overcoat he had worn when he found Emma's sandwich.

Celeste sat beside Preston and a team of attorneys. She wore a pale blue dress and an expression of practiced concern.

Her petition alleged that Graham's stroke made him vulnerable to confusion and that Owen's unexplained absence left Emma without reliable family management. Celeste asked for temporary control of the trust and the child's financial interests.

Graham listened without interrupting.

Then his attorney stood.

“Mr. Walsh is not asking this court to decide custody based on wealth. He is asking the court to consider the child's safety and preserve disputed assets while the facts are investigated.”

The attorney submitted the clinician's report, Mrs. Alvarez's notebook, photographs of the storage room, and evidence of suspicious financial transfers.

Celeste's expression changed.

Preston whispered sharply to her.

The judge ordered an independent review of the trust and maintained temporary protective arrangements for Emma. The disputed voting proxy would not be used pending further proceedings.

It was not a final victory.

Graham knew better than to call it one.

Outside, Celeste caught him near the elevator.

“You humiliated me.”

“You hurt Emma.”

“You've always preferred Owen.”

Graham stared at her.

“I trusted you with the house.”

“And never with the company.”

“You were a director.”

“Not the director.”

The elevator doors opened. Neither moved.

Celeste lowered her voice.

“Your precious son isn't innocent.”

“Then let him answer for himself when we find him.”

She smiled faintly.

“You think he's missing because I took him?”

Graham felt the familiar pull of her half-truths.

“Tell me where he is.”

“Ask your doctor.”

The doors closed between them.

Shaw located Dr. Vale's rehabilitation facility an hour later. Owen was registered there under a shortened version of his name. Staff initially refused to confirm he was a patient.

With legal authorization and medical safeguards, investigators established that Owen had been admitted after a fall and had requested contact with his father. His requests had not been passed along.

Graham waited while clinicians confirmed Owen was well enough to receive him.

When the door opened, Owen sat beside a window in a hospital robe. His forehead was bruised, and his left arm rested in a sling.

“Dad?”

Graham crossed the room.

Owen tried to stand. Graham told him not to.

For a long moment neither spoke.

Then Owen said, “Where's Emma?”

“Safe.”

Owen closed his eyes.

“Is she hurt?”

“She's being cared for. She needs you.”

Owen began crying.

“I knew Celeste was cruel to her. I didn't know how bad it was.”

Graham sat down.

“You knew enough to worry?”

“Yes.”

“Then you should have acted sooner.”

Owen nodded.

“I know.”

There was no dramatic absolution. Graham had come to find his son, not excuse him.

Owen explained that he confronted Preston after discovering the forged proxy. Preston shoved him during an argument in the garage. Owen fell against a workbench and briefly lost consciousness. When he woke, he was in Dr. Vale's facility. Vale insisted he needed observation and discouraged outside contact.

Shaw documented his account.

Dr. Vale denied wrongdoing and said Owen had been confused. Records would have to settle the dispute.

Graham showed Owen the photograph from Nora's box.

“Did she know?”

Owen stared at it.

“She knew somebody was stealing. She thought it was an outsider.”

“Was it?”

“I don't know.”

He reached into his bedside drawer and produced a folded page.

“I found this inside Nora's Christmas cookbook.”

It was a receipt for a private investigator.

The investigator had been hired to examine Nora's fatal collision.

Graham read the final line.

REAR BRAKE SYSTEM — INDEPENDENT INSPECTION REQUESTED.

His voice became very quiet.

“Why was she investigating her own car?”

Owen looked at him.

“She wasn't. She was investigating yours.”

May you like

Graham stared.

The car Nora had driven on the night she died had been Graham's.
