Chapter 6 - The Night the Penthouse Went Dark

Carlo chose Dominic’s penthouse for the exchange.

Not because anyone agreed to one.

Because he broke in.

The building’s private security alerted Marco just after midnight. Cameras on the forty-second floor went dark for ninety seconds, then returned showing Carlo sitting calmly in Dominic’s living room with the blue ledger on the coffee table.

He poured himself a drink.

Then called.

“I thought we should end this where you always imagined yourself untouchable.”

Rebecca wanted to send a tactical team.

Dominic wanted to go alone.

Elena thought both plans were terrible.

“No one goes alone,” she said.

Rebecca looked at her.

“You are definitely not going.”

“I agree.”

Everyone stared.

Elena folded her arms.

“I am a nurse, not a hostage negotiator.”

Marco laughed.

Dominic almost did.

The operation moved without her.

For forty minutes.

Then everything changed.

The building’s fire alarm activated.

Residents began evacuating.

Carlo disappeared from the cameras.

Marco called from the street.

“He’s moving.”

Rebecca’s people lost visual contact.

Then Elena’s phone buzzed.

A picture.

Dominic’s penthouse bedroom.

Her old wedding photograph on the floor.

Message:

COME UP OR I BURN THE LEDGER.

Rebecca said, “Absolutely not.”

Elena replied, “He wants me visible.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“To control Dominic.”

“So we use that.”

Rebecca stared at her.

Dominic, standing beside the elevator, said, “No.”

Elena looked at him.

“Options, remember?”

“This is not an option.”

“Then give me another.”

He could not.

Rebecca eventually approved a controlled version.

Elena would remain on a secure video call from the lobby command post. Carlo would see her on Dominic’s tablet upstairs, not physically have her.

Dominic hated it.

That helped Elena know the plan was reasonable.

He and Marco entered the penthouse with law-enforcement teams covering the stairwells.

Carlo appeared on the tablet.

“Elena.”

She saw him through the screen.

He looked tired now.

Not powerful.

Not mythic.

Just an old man who had spent decades mistaking influence for immortality.

“Where is the ledger?” she asked.

He smiled.

“Straight to work.”

“I spent New Year’s in slippers running from armed men. I’m not interested in your theater.”

Marco murmured, “I really like her.”

Dominic gave him a look.

Carlo’s smile faded.

“The book proves Dominic is not the reformer he wants you to believe.”

“I don’t believe he is a reformer.”

Dominic glanced at the tablet.

Elena continued.

“I believe he is responsible for what he did.”

Carlo leaned back.

“And you still love him.”

She did not answer.

Carlo laughed.

“That is the weakness.”

“No.”

His expression changed.

“The weakness is believing love removes responsibility.”

Dominic stared at the screen.

Carlo’s fingers tightened around his glass.

Elena continued.

“You used Dominic’s grief. You leaked my medical information. You worked with Victor because you wanted the old system to survive.”

“You know nothing about what built this family.”

“I know enough.”

Carlo stood.

The lights died.

The video cut.

Rebecca swore.

Upstairs, the tactical feed erupted with voices.

Elena heard a crash.

Then Marco shouted.

Then nothing.

“Dominic?”

No answer.

She hated every second.

Finally the feed returned.

Dominic was on the floor beside the dining table.

Marco knelt nearby, holding his side.

Carlo stood behind Dominic with a broken chair leg raised like a club.

No gun.

Somehow that made the scene more brutal.

Carlo swung.

Dominic rolled aside.

The wood struck the floor.

Dominic surged up, grabbed Carlo’s arm, and drove him backward against the wall.

They fought like men who had known each other for decades.

Not graceful.

Not cinematic.

Angry.

Personal.

Carlo struck Dominic across the mouth.

Dominic hit him once in the ribs and forced him down.

Carlo reached for something inside his coat.

Dominic caught his wrist.

Marco shouted, “Knife!”

Dominic twisted the weapon away.

He could have kept hitting him.

Elena saw the moment.

So did Carlo.

“Do it,” Carlo spat. “Show her what you are.”

Dominic’s fist was raised.

Then he looked toward the tablet camera.

Toward Elena.

He lowered his hand.

“Police.”

The tactical team entered seconds later and restrained Carlo.

Rebecca exhaled beside Elena.

Upstairs, Marco slid against the wall.

Blood darkened his shirt.

Elena stood.

“I’m going up.”

Rebecca started to object.

“He needs medical care.”

“There are paramedics.”

“I am his sister-in-law.”

The words surprised her.

Maybe divorce papers could not erase every relationship immediately.

By the time Elena reached the penthouse, paramedics were working on Marco.

The wound was serious but not immediately life-threatening.

Dominic stood nearby with blood on his lip.

Elena ignored him and went to Marco.

“You picked a bad night to get dramatic.”

Marco managed a smile.

“Family tradition.”

Carlo was being led away.

He stopped when he saw Elena.

“You think this ends anything?”

She looked at him.

“No.”

He smiled.

Then she added, “But it ends your access to me.”

His smile disappeared.

The blue ledger lay on the floor near the sofa.

Rebecca’s evidence team bagged it.

Dominic watched.

Decades of secrets disappeared into lawful custody.

He looked strangely relieved.

Then Rebecca opened the first page.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

She showed Dominic.

A handwritten list of payments.

One name appeared repeatedly.

VICTOR ANTONOV.

Another appeared beside the oldest entry.

DR. BRENNER.

And beside the payment dated the week Dominic’s father died:

C. BIANCHI — AUTHORIZED BY L.C.

Dominic stared.

“L.C.?”

Marco, pale on the stretcher, whispered, “Lucia Castellano.”

Their mother.

The woman whose note had warned Elena about power.

Dominic shook his head.

“No.”

Rebecca said nothing.

Elena looked at the handwriting.

Then at Dominic.

May you like

The ledger had just turned their mother from witness into suspect.

And the war had become a family history nobody in the room was ready to read.
