Chapter 8 - When the Invisible Girl Became the Headline

Tessa woke the next morning to thirty-eight missed calls.
Reporters stood outside her apartment.
Outside her mother's house.
Outside Leto.
Someone had found her nursing school.
Photos appeared online.
Tessa carrying trays.
Tessa entering Mateo's townhouse.
Tessa leaving Saint Gabriel's beneath a security escort.
The captions called her everything from "mystery girlfriend" to "mafia waitress."
One outlet claimed she had been planted at Leto to seduce Mateo.
Another called her an accomplice.
A third published her mother's address.
Tessa threw the phone across the hospital waiting room.
Lucia picked it up.
"You should break expensive things belonging to other people. More satisfying."
Tessa groaned.
"My life is over."
"No."
"Everyone knows who I am."
"Yes."
"I'm supposed to start clinical rotations next month."
"You still can."
"No hospital is going to want someone whose picture is beside the words mafia scandal."
Salvatore entered.
"I can fix that."
Tessa looked at him.
"No."
"I haven't said how."
"Doesn't matter."
He stopped.
Then, unexpectedly, nodded.
"Good."
Tessa blinked.
"What?"
"You said no."
"Yes."
"And I listened."
She stared at him.
Lucia smiled.
"The old dog is learning."
Salvatore ignored her.
Mateo's attorney, Evelyn, entered carrying files.
"We have a bigger problem."
"Wonderful," Tessa said.
"The district attorney's office wants testimony."
Salvatore's expression hardened.
"From whom?"
"All of us."
"What about Carlo?"
"They're looking."
Mateo appeared in the doorway.
Tessa shot to her feet.
"You are supposed to be in bed."
He wore hospital pants, a T-shirt, and the stubborn expression of a man who had never enjoyed instructions.
"I walked twelve feet."
"Walk twelve feet back."
Evelyn looked amused.
Salvatore said, "Listen to the nurse."
"She's not a nurse yet."
Tessa crossed her arms.
"Keep talking."
Mateo sat.
Evelyn spread documents across the table.
"The ledger is enough to open investigations, but Carlo will claim fabrication unless we establish chain of custody."
Lucia raised her hand.
"I took it from the archive."
"Good."
"Rosalia's tape explains the code."
"Better."
"Tessa can authenticate Rosalia's handwriting and voice."
Evelyn nodded.
"Exactly."
Mateo looked at Tessa.
"No."
She stared.
"Excuse me?"
"You don't have to testify."
Evelyn sighed.
"Mateo."
"Carlo already put her life online."
Tessa leaned toward him.
"You were doing so well with the choices thing."
His jaw tightened.
"I'm not ordering you."
"It sounded suspiciously like it."
He looked away.
Tessa understood.
This wasn't control.
It was fear wearing the same clothes.
She softened.
"I want to testify."
His eyes returned.
"Why?"
"Because my great-grandmother hid for fifty years."
She looked at the ledger.
"Maybe that kept us alive. Maybe it was the right choice then."
Then she looked at Salvatore.
"But silence is what let Carlo become respectable."
Salvatore lowered his eyes.
"I'm not hiding."
Mateo studied her.
Then nodded once.
"Okay."
One word.
It meant more than any promise.
Two days later, Tessa walked into the district attorney's office through a wall of cameras.
She wore no expensive borrowed clothes.
No designer coat.
No security disguise.
Just black slacks, a cream blouse, and the same cheap shoes she wore to nursing class.
Mateo walked beside her.
His arm remained in a sling.
Reporters shouted.
"Tessa! Are you romantically involved with Mateo Vitiello?"
"Did the Vitiello family pay you?"
"Did you help conceal evidence?"
"Is your mother connected to organized crime?"
Tessa kept walking.
Then one reporter yelled:
"Are you afraid of Carlo Vitiello?"
Tessa stopped.
Mateo glanced at her.
She turned toward the cameras.
"Yes."
The crowd quieted.
"I'm afraid of anyone who believes fear makes other people belong to them."
Mateo watched her.
Tessa continued.
"But being afraid doesn't mean I'm going to lie."
Then she entered the building.
The statement appeared everywhere within an hour.
More importantly, the testimony worked.
Federal investigators obtained warrants.
Carlo's companies were raided.
Accounts frozen.
Associates detained.
Several former employees began talking.
The empire he'd built beneath charities and corporations began collapsing.
But Carlo himself remained missing.
Three nights later, Tessa returned to Leto to clear out her locker.
David met her in the employee hallway.
He looked ashamed.
"We can hold your job."
Tessa smiled sadly.
"I don't think I can come back."
"I understand."
She opened her locker.
Inside were her sneakers.
Two nursing textbooks.
A photo of her family.
And a white envelope.
Tessa froze.
"Was this here before?"
David shook his head.
She opened it.
One sentence.
Rosalia hid you well. Mateo won't.
Tessa's skin went cold.
Then the kitchen lights went out.
David swore.
A metal door slammed somewhere behind them.
Tessa grabbed her phone.
No signal.
The service hallway filled with darkness.
Then a man's voice came from the far end.
"Hello, Tessina."
Carlo stepped into the emergency light.
He held a gun.
David backed against the wall.
Tessa's heartbeat thundered.
Carlo smiled.
"Your great-grandmother caused me fifty years of inconvenience."
May you like
He raised the weapon.
"So before I leave the country, I thought I'd return the favor."
