Chapter 5 - The Father Sarah Was Afraid to Tell

Rebecca explained that Sarah never feared Nathan would hurt Lily. She feared he would refuse to believe the truth about his own family.
Sarah had once warned him that Aaron’s financial numbers looked wrong.
Nathan remembered dismissing her.
“Aaron is messy, not dishonest,” he had said.
“She knew you loved your family so much you defended them automatically,” Rebecca said.
Nathan sat quietly.
“She was right.”
Rebecca handed him a flash drive.
It documented payments through Evergreen Family Services. Money led to Aaron and Margaret.
Then Nathan saw another name.
Charles Cole.
His father.
“My father died twelve years ago.”
Rebecca said Sarah had not believed it.
Charles supposedly died in a boating accident. The coffin had remained closed.
Records suggested a Charles C. had been receiving payments in Vermont.
Nathan returned to the mansion with Dana.
Margaret demanded a meeting.
“You’ve turned this family into a circus.”
“My daughter slept in a utility room.”
“She needed humility.”
“She needed her father.”
Margaret produced a card belonging to a divorce attorney with Sarah’s handwriting: CALL AFTER CHRISTMAS.
“She was preparing to leave you,” Margaret said.
Nathan felt the blow.
Dana examined it. “This attorney also handles asset protection.”
Margaret’s satisfaction weakened.
Nathan looked at his mother.
“You keep trying to make me angry at dead people because they can’t defend themselves.”
“She didn’t trust you.”
“Neither did Lily.”
Margaret stared.
“And both had reasons.”
Nathan opened the door.
“You should leave.”
“I raised you.”
“And I’m grateful for the good things.”
“You owe me.”
“No child owes a parent permission to hurt the next generation.”
Margaret left furious.
Minutes later Claire called.
“We found Charles.”
Nathan froze.
“Alive?”
“Yes.”
“Where?”
“At your house.”
Security footage showed an elderly man entering through the back door using the correct alarm code.
He walked directly into the laundry room.

Then Charles Cole—dead for twelve years—looked into the camera and held up a sign.
NATHAN, ASK YOUR MOTHER WHAT SHE DID TO SARAH.
