Chapter 7 - The Box With Felix’s Name

Safe-deposit box 417 contained no money.

It contained Felix’s original birth records.

Maren recognized the hospital bracelet, newborn footprints, and the photograph of Russell holding him.

Then Dana found a second DNA report.

“Why was this done?”

Maren read the date.

Felix had been three months old.

Russell had ordered a private paternity test.

Probability of paternity: 0.00%.

Maren nearly laughed.

“That’s impossible.”

Dana looked at her carefully.

“Are you certain?”

“Russell is the only man I was with.”

“Then either the test is wrong or the sample wasn’t Felix’s.”

A handwritten note from Evelyn solved part of it.

Russell knows the test is false. He created it as leverage.

Maren sank into a chair.

Leverage against whom?

The next document answered.

Diane.

Russell had convinced his mother that Felix was not biologically a Dane. That allowed him to persuade her to restructure assets around Russell rather than the child.

He had weaponized a fake paternity test against his own son before Felix could crawl.

Maren felt nauseated.

Dana said, “This man plans years ahead.”

“He also panics.”

“How do you know?”

“Because I came home early.”

That was the one variable Russell had not controlled.

They arranged a forensic DNA test through the court.

While waiting, Maren focused on Felix.

He attended therapy.

He chose a red winter coat.

He began asking for seconds at dinner.

One evening he spilled cocoa on the hotel bedspread.

His face went blank with terror.

“I’m sorry.”

Maren grabbed a towel.

“It’s cocoa.”

“I ruined it.”

“It washes.”

“Celeste said things cost money.”

“They do.”

“Then you’re mad.”

“No.”

Felix stared at her.

Maren sat beside him.

“Sweetheart, accidents cost money sometimes. They do not cost love.”

His eyes filled.

“Really?”

“Really.”

He leaned against her shoulder.

Outside, snow fell over Charlotte.

For the first time, he asked her about Tampa.

“Did you have Christmas there?”

“Yes.”

“Without me?”

Maren’s heart tightened.

“I put your picture beside my bed every year.”

“Dad said you had another kid.”

“No.”

“Not even a secret one?”

She almost laughed.

“No.”

He smiled slightly.

Progress arrived in tiny pieces.

Then the DNA results came.

Russell was Felix’s biological father.

The old test was fraudulent.

Dana smiled.

“One lie dead.”

But another result had been ordered.

Noah.

Celeste consented.

Russell was Noah’s biological father too.

“So Raymond’s name was purely fraud,” Dana said.

Celeste cried with relief and shame.

Maren felt no triumph.

Two children had been turned into paperwork.

That evening, Russell was arrested on financial fraud charges.

He posted bond within hours.

Outside the courthouse, reporters surrounded him.

Russell looked into a camera.

“My estranged wife abandoned our child for five years and returned only after learning she controls a multimillion-dollar company.”

Maren watched from Dana’s office.

Felix was not there.

Thank God.

Russell continued.

“I have made mistakes, but I stayed. Maren left.”

The sentence spread online.

Comments followed.

What mother leaves for five years?

There are two sides.

Poor dad.

Maren turned off the screen.

Dana said, “We can respond.”

“Not with Felix’s pain.”

“Good.”

Maren refused to turn her son into public evidence.

That night, a Christmas package arrived at the hotel.

No return address.

Inside was Felix’s old stuffed bear.

Judith gasped.

“He left that at the house.”

A small recorder had been sewn inside.

Dana called police.

The device contained hours of audio from Russell’s home.

One recording began with Felix crying.

Russell’s voice said, “Stop asking for your mother.”

Felix whispered, “I miss her.”

Russell replied, “Then learn something now. People who love you stay.”

Maren covered her mouth.

Then a second adult voice entered.

Not Celeste.

Not Diane.

A woman said, “Russell, that’s enough.”

Maren knew that voice.

She had heard it every day for five years.

May you like

Evelyn Price.

The dead woman Maren had cared for had been inside her house with Felix.
