Chapter 8 - The Day the Mafia Boss Walked Away From His Empire

Federal agents entered the Russo estate at 6:12 a.m.

Dominic did not resist.

That surprised everyone.

Even Norah.

He handed over his phone.

His laptop.

Keys.

Access codes.

The lead agent read charges related to older financial crimes and conspiracy allegations uncovered inside Carlo’s server.

Dominic listened calmly.

Then turned toward Lily.

She stood in the hallway holding Maria’s hand.

“Dad?”

His face changed.

He crouched.

“I need to go answer some questions.”

“Are you in trouble?”

Maybe.

That word remained unspoken.

Dominic smiled gently.

“I’ll come home.”

Lily’s eyes filled.

“Promise?”

Dominic hesitated.

Norah saw it.

He had learned not to make promises he could not control.

“I promise I’ll do everything I can.”

Lily hugged him.

Then Dominic approached Norah.

She wanted to be angry.

Instead she felt terrified.

“What did you do?”

“Enough.”

“Dominic.”

He lowered his voice.

“Some of the charges are real.”

Her chest tightened.

“I told you I wasn’t clean.”

“You also gave them the evidence.”

“That may matter.”

“And may not.”

“Yes.”

He placed one hand against her stomach.

Daniel moved.

Dominic smiled sadly.

“I’m sorry.”

“Don’t.”

“Norah—”

“You don’t get to disappear emotionally just because men put you in handcuffs.”

His eyes sharpened.

“I’m coming to court.”

“No.”

“Try stopping me.”

That almost made him smile.

The case exploded across the news.

DOMINIC RUSSO ARRESTED.

CRIME BOSS COOPERATES IN ORSINI PROBE.

RUSSO RECORDS EXPOSE MEDICAL BLACKMAIL NETWORK.

Public opinion split instantly.

Some called Dominic a criminal attempting to buy redemption.

Others described him as the informant who dismantled a network that had blackmailed hundreds.

Norah ignored all of it.

Facts mattered.

Dominic admitted to financial crimes.

Illegal gambling operations from years earlier.

Bribery committed under his leadership.

He did not admit to murders prosecutors could not prove.

He did not invent innocence.

That mattered to Norah more than any headline.

Carlo Orsini was arrested two days later.

Dr. Serrano tried to flee.

He was caught at Logan Airport.

Vivienne surrendered voluntarily.

Her cooperation became key.

Dr. Aris returned home to her family.

Norah attended Dominic’s detention hearing at thirty-two weeks pregnant.

Everyone stared.

Cameras followed.

She wore a plain blue dress and held Lily’s hand.

Dominic entered in a dark suit without tie.

No handcuffs.

His eyes found them immediately.

Lily waved.

The prosecutor requested detention.

Dominic’s attorney argued cooperation, family ties, and surrender.

Then the judge asked Dominic whether he understood the seriousness of the allegations.

“Yes, Your Honor.”

“And you voluntarily provided the records that led to some of these charges?”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Dominic looked toward Norah.

Then Lily.

“Because hiding them would have protected the wrong people.”

The courtroom went silent.

He was released pending trial under strict conditions.

When he walked outside, reporters shouted questions.

“Mr. Russo, are you still running the organization?”

“Did you order violence?”

“Is Ms. Hayes carrying your child?”

“Will your son inherit the Russo empire?”

Dominic stopped.

Norah’s heart tightened.

He turned toward the cameras.

“My children will inherit whatever legitimate life I can leave them.”

The reporters erupted.

One shouted:

“Are you retiring?”

Dominic looked at Luca.

Then at Norah.

“Yes.”

That answer shocked everyone.

Including Norah.

Later, inside the SUV, she stared.

“You’re retiring?”

“I suppose.”

“You decided that on courthouse steps?”

“I’ve made worse decisions under pressure.”

“What happens to everything?”

“Legitimate companies go into independent management.”

“And the rest?”

“Closed.”

“You can do that?”

“It will make many people unhappy.”

“Dangerous people?”

“Yes.”

Norah sighed.

“So our peaceful life begins with half the underworld irritated.”

“Basically.”

“Excellent.”

He smiled.

Then her face changed.

Dominic immediately noticed.

“What?”

Norah gripped the seat.

A contraction.

Strong.

Too early.

“Norah?”

Another.

She inhaled slowly.

“Don’t panic.”

He panicked instantly.

“Luca.”

“I said don’t—”

“Hospital.”

“It could be Braxton Hicks.”

“Hospital.”

“Dominic.”

“Hospital!”

Luca accelerated.

Norah would later laugh about how pale Dominic became.

At the time, nothing was funny.

Contractions continued.

At the hospital, Dr. Price examined her.

“Preterm labor.”

Dominic stopped breathing.

“Can you stop it?”

“We’re going to try.”

Norah was admitted.

Medication.

Monitoring.

Steroids to support Daniel’s lungs in case he arrived early.

Dominic stayed beside her.

For forty-eight hours he barely moved.

By the second night, contractions slowed.

Norah finally slept.

Dominic sat by the window.

His phone remained turned off.

His empire could burn.

For once, he was exactly where he needed to be.

When Norah woke, she watched him.

“You stayed.”

He looked confused.

“Where would I go?”

Tears filled her eyes.

He understood.

Her father had left.

Old boyfriends had disappeared when life became difficult.

Employers replaced workers when inconvenient.

Norah had learned not to expect people to stay.

Dominic moved beside her.

“I’m not going anywhere.”

“Don’t promise what you can’t control.”

He remembered.

Then corrected himself.

“I choose to stay as long as I’m allowed.”

Norah squeezed his hand.

“Better.”

They managed to stop labor.

Daniel remained inside.

Safe.

For now.

But before they left the hospital, Luca arrived carrying an envelope.

No return address.

Inside was a photograph of the Russo estate.

A red circle had been drawn around Lily’s bedroom.

Dominic’s face hardened.

Underneath:

YOU CAN QUIT THE BUSINESS.

THE BUSINESS DOESN’T QUIT YOU.

Norah looked at him.

Carlo was in custody.

Serrano too.

Vivienne cooperating.

Which meant someone else remained.

Someone inside Dominic’s old organization.

Someone who did not want him to walk away.

May you like

And this time—

they were coming for Lily.
