Chapter 15 - The Man Beside the Marina

Daniel did not deny the photograph.
That was becoming his most infuriating quality.
He lied until evidence appeared.
Then he became honest.
"I met Thomas before Sofia died."
His voice sounded tired.
Mara had moved us to a secure interview room away from the nursery.
"Why?" she asked.
Daniel stared at his hands. "Sofia introduced us."
I felt anger rise. "You said Thomas hired you four months ago."
"He did."
"You knew him six months ago."
"Yes."
"What else have you lied about?"
Daniel looked at me. "Too much."
"Specific."
"Sofia wasn't only an investor."
My stomach tightened. "What was she?"
"She worked for Mariner."
Vanessa closed her eyes.
Daniel continued. "She recruited investors. At first she believed it was legitimate. Then she realized returns were being paid from new money."
"A Ponzi structure," I said.
"Partly."
"Why didn't you tell police?"
"I did after she died. They said being involved might have given her motive for suicide."
Mara looked uncomfortable.
He was right.
"Where does Thomas enter?"
"Sofia found his name in the consulting payments. She contacted him."
"Why?"
"She thought he was part of the fraud."
"Was he?"
Daniel hesitated. "I don't know."
"Still?"
"He said Vale Advisory was used without his permission after he disappeared."
"That's plausible," I said. "Not proof."
"He agreed to help Sofia expose Victor."
"Then why were you at the marina?"
"We met to plan how she would copy Victor's bank records."
"And two days later she died."
"Yes."
"Why did you tell me Thomas hired you after her death?"
"Because he did. After Sofia died, he contacted me and said Richard had begun using your identity."
"Why you?"
"Because I already knew the case."
"And because grief made you easy to control."
Daniel looked at me. "Yes."
For the first time, I saw him not as rescuer or liar but as another person the conspiracy had bent until his decisions no longer looked like his own.
That did not erase what he had done.
It made it understandable.
Those are different things.
Mara examined the marina photograph. "Who took this?"
Daniel shook his head. "I don't know."
Vanessa said, "Victor."
"Why?"
"He was watching Thomas."
Camille turned to her. "You have said Thomas is dangerous. Why?"
Vanessa looked toward me. "Because he threatened Lily."
Every muscle in my body locked. "When?"
"Two weeks before the shower."
"What did he say?"
"He called me. He knew Grandma changed the trust. He said, 'If the baby inherits, Richard wins through Evelyn.'"
"That is not a threat."
"Then he said, 'Sometimes branches have to be cut to save the tree.'"
Daniel stood abruptly. "He wouldn't."
Vanessa laughed. "You know him for six months."
"So do you."
"No. I've known about him for six years."
Everyone turned.
Vanessa continued. "Thomas contacted me after Grandma told me who I was."
"Why?" I asked.
"He wanted information about Richard."
"Did you give it?"
"Yes."
"Did he pay you?"
"No."
"What did he give you?"
Vanessa looked ashamed. "The truth about Diane."
I felt cold. "What truth?"
"Diane knew Richard killed Laura before she agreed to raise me."
Mom had admitted that.
But Vanessa continued. "And she used Laura's death to take control of her shares."
"That transfer was forged."
"Yes. By Diane."
Another piece clicked into place.
My mother was not merely afraid.
She had profited.
Vanessa said, "Thomas hated her more than Richard."
"Why?"
"She chose Richard."
"That is not a reason to threaten Lily."
"No. The trust is."
I looked at Mara. "Find Thomas before he reaches us."
"We are."
"Find him faster."
At three that afternoon, Eleanor asked to see me.
She was weaker.
The fire alarm, transfer, and interrogation had exhausted her.
I sat beside the bed. "Did Thomas threaten Lily?"
Her eyes filled.
She nodded.
My chest cracked. "When?"
She wrote:
After trust changed.
"What did he want?"
Shares to Evelyn.
"Not Lily?"
She shook her head.
"Why?"
Richard cannot control Evelyn.
That sounded almost flattering until I understood.
"Thomas wanted me to own the company."
Yes.
"And he thought Lily made that harder?"
Yes.
"Would he hurt her?"
Eleanor's hand froze.
Then she wrote:
Old Thomas no.
"And now?"
Tears rolled down her cheeks.
I knew the answer.
Maybe.
Before I left, Eleanor pulled me close and whispered one broken sentence.
"Blue ledger."
"What?"
"Blue... ledger... real."
"Where is it?"
She pointed toward my chest.
I touched the hospital gown. "I don't understand."
"Key."
The locket.
Vanessa had stolen it.
I called Mara. "Ask Vanessa where the locket is."
Vanessa answered through her attorney.
She had not taken the key for herself.
Victor had ordered her to.
But after entering my apartment, she realized the locket might matter more than he understood.
So she hid it.
"Where?" I asked.
Vanessa almost smiled. "At Mom's house."
"Why there?"
"Because no one hides stolen property in the victim's enemy's bedroom."
It was so exactly Vanessa that I almost smiled too.
Police searched Diane's house.
They found the locket inside a hollow perfume box.
The tiny brass key opened a safe deposit compartment in the blue house basement that investigators had missed because it was built behind a removable water-heater panel.
Inside was the blue ledger.
Handwritten.
Thirty-four years of ownership changes, secret loans, bribes, payments, and names.
Richard.
Diane.
Victor.
Thomas.
Everyone.
Then I saw a line that stopped me.
Payment - T. Vale - $500,000 - silence re Laura.
Dated one week after Laura's death.
I stared.
Thomas had taken money.
Maybe not for murder.
For silence.
A second line appeared three years later.
Payment - T. Vale - $300,000 - Caribbean relocation.
Then another.
Another.
Over two million dollars across twenty years.
Thomas had not disappeared because he was powerless.
He had been paid to stay gone.
My phone rang.
Unknown number.
Thomas.
I answered. "You found the ledger," he said.
"How do you know?"
"I know Eleanor."
"You took money."
Silence.
"To stay away from me."
"Yes."
"Why?"
"Because Diane threatened to accuse me of abuse."
"Was she lying?"
A pause.
Too long.
"Thomas?"
"I lost my temper sometimes."
My stomach turned. "Did you hit her?"
"Yes."
"While she was pregnant with me?"
Silence.
That was my answer.
I looked at Lily.
Then said, "You are not my father."
Thomas's voice cracked. "Biology says otherwise."
"Biology is the least important thing I've learned this week."
He inhaled. "Evie, Victor is coming."
"He already came."
"I know."
"How?"
"Because he called me from the hospital."
My blood went cold. "When?"
"After he ran."
"What did he want?"
"The ledger."
"He doesn't have it."
"I know."
"Why tell me?"
"Because he thinks you do."
I looked at Mara. "Where is Victor?"
Thomas answered softly. "Closer than you think."
Then every phone in the room received the same emergency alert.
May you like
Hospital lockdown.
Armed suspect reported on campus.
