Chapter 10 - The Live Broadcast Exposé

The auditorium exploded into deafening chaos. Reporters shouted over one another, camera operators scrambled to zoom in on my face, and campaign security guards rushed the stage from both wings.

'Get this woman off the stage immediately!' Julian Sterling roared, his charismatic veneer completely shattered, revealing the cold, panicked tyrant underneath. He turned to his chief of staff standing in the wings. 'Arthur, shut down the audio feed! Cut the cameras!'

Too late. Detective Voss and three armed backup officers who had flooded the ballroom stepped between Sterling's security detail and the stage, their badges held high.

'Touch her or anyone from the press, and you’re facing immediate obstruction of justice charges,' Voss barked, her voice cutting through the uproar like a razor blade.

I stood my ground directly in front of Sterling, pulling a small media tablet from my blazer pocket. With a few quick taps, I connected the tablet to the stage's primary AV presentation switcher via a wireless transmitter.

Instantly, the massive high-definition LED screens behind the podium—meant to display Sterling's campaign slogan—flickered black, then flooded with decrypted emails, bank routing numbers, and scanned copies of the signed arson contracts between Sterling Enterprises and Vance Development.

The entire room gasped as millions of viewers watching the live-stream broadcast across the country stared at the undeniable proof of systemic municipal corruption and premeditated murder.

'Look at the screen, Mr. Sterling,' I said softly, my voice trembling with controlled fury. 'Look at the wire transfer records from your offshore Swiss accounts to my father’s corporate slush fund. Look at the email exchange where your chief of staff explicitly approved the 'clearance protocol' for 442 Elm Street.'

Sterling stared up at the giant screens, his face draining of all color until he looked like a corpse standing in a tailored suit. He tried to speak, but no words came out; his lips merely twitched in silent terror.

'Julian Sterling,' Detective Voss said, stepping up onto the stage and pulling a pair of steel handcuffs from her belt as the flashbulbs blinded us from all directions. 'You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, systemic extortion, and corporate racketeering.'

The handcuffs clicked shut around the billionaire's wrists with a sharp, metallic ring that sounded like a death knell for his political career.

As two uniformed officers escorted Sterling away past stunned reporters and sobbing campaign donors, he cast one final, venomous glance back at me—a look of pure, unbridled hatred.

I didn't blink. I didn't look away.

I stood tall under the blinding lights of national television, watching him fall.

Later that evening, sitting in Detective Voss’s office as the initial wave of media frenzy began to settle, my phone buzzed incessantly on the desk.

It was a text message from an unknown burner number. I opened it slowly.

The message contained a single photo: a grainy surveillance shot of my hospital room from three weeks ago, taken from an angle where no security camera had ever been pointed.

And beneath the photo, a single line of text:

May you like

'You forgot about the third partner, Claire.'

My blood ran ice cold as the reality crashed over me: the nightmare wasn't over. It was only just beginning.
