Chapter 15 - Midnight in the Alleyway

The freezing wind howled through the narrow, brick-walled alleyway behind Ashbury Station, blowing heavy sheets of snow across the pavement.

Daniel Mercer stepped out into the biting dark, his boots crunching softly on the fresh ice. He held a heavy industrial flashlight in his right hand, its powerful beam cutting through the swirling white flakes.

As he approached the shelter’s main utility shed—a small brick enclosure housing the high-pressure natural gas valves—he noticed that the heavy iron padlock on the door had been freshly severed with bolt cutters.

Daniel slowed his pace, his senses on high alert. "Is someone in there?" he called out, his voice sharp and authoritative over the wind.

Suddenly, a figure lunged out from the dark shed, brandishing a heavy steel crowbar!

Daniel reacted instantly, dodging to the left as the crowbar slammed viciously against the brick wall with a shower of bright sparks. Daniel lunged forward, grabbing the attacker's wrist, twisting it sharply until the steel bar clattered onto the ice.

He pinned the intruder against the wall, shining the flashlight beam directly into his face.

Daniel gasped in complete shock. "Grant?!"

Grant Lawson glared back at him, his face contorted in a mask of unhinged, psychotic rage. His eyes were wide, wild, and completely unraveled.

"Hello, Daniel," Grant spat out, saliva spraying from his lips. "Surprise!"

"Grant... what are you doing here?!" Daniel demanded, holding his former partner pinned against the brickwork. "Are you out of your mind?!"

"I'm taking back what you stole from me!" Grant screamed hysterically. "You destroyed my life! You sent me to prison! You gave away our money to these filthy parasites!"

Daniel looked past Grant’s shoulder into the open utility shed. Inside, a heavy wrench was attached to the main high-pressure gas bypass valve. A loud, terrifying hissing sound was already echoing through the shed as sweet-smelling natural gas began venting rapidly into the enclosed space!

"Grant, stop!" Daniel yelled, horror clawing at his throat. "You opened the high-pressure line! The gas is accumulating! A single spark will blow up this entire block!"

"That's the point, Daniel!" Grant laughed maniacally, reaching into his heavy coat pocket with his free hand. "If I can't have my life back, you don't get your little saintly shelter either! Everyone inside burns tonight!"

Grant pulled out a metallic silver pocket lighter, flicking the wheel!

A tiny blue flame erupted in the gas-filled darkness of the alleyway!

"No!" Daniel screamed.

Daniel threw his entire weight into Grant, knocking the lighter from his hand just as the spark ignited a small cloud of gas near the entrance!

BOOM!

A sharp, violent explosion of flame erupted from the shed doorway, throwing both men backward onto the icy pavement!

The concussive force knocked the wind out of Daniel, sending his flashlight spinning into the snow. He scrambled to his hands and knees, coughing violently from the acrid smoke, his face scorched by the heat wave.

Inside the utility shed, a roaring wall of fire was spreading rapidly toward the main gas supply line! If the main supply line ruptured, the entire rear wing of the shelter—where dozens of children were currently sleeping upstairs—would be completely engulfed in seconds!

Grant was lying on the snow ten feet away, groaning in pain, his leg badly injured from the blast.

"Help me, Daniel!" Grant shrieked in terror, seeing the flames spreading toward him. "Don't leave me! Help me!"

Daniel stood up on the slick ice, his mind racing in sheer panic. The alarms inside the shelter were already beginning to blare, their shrill sirens echoing through the night. He could hear Dr. Evelyn Carter’s voice over the loudspeaker system initiating emergency evacuation protocols.

Daniel looked at the burning shed. He looked at the main shut-off valve located deep inside the flame-engulfed room—a valve that had to be turned manually to stop the gas flow and prevent a catastrophic second explosion.

Then he looked down at Grant Lawson—the man who had betrayed him, the man who had tried to murder hundreds of innocent children, the man who was begging for his life on the snow.

For a split second, twenty-four years of ghosts rushed through Daniel’s mind.

He saw the broken laundry window at Ashbury House. He saw himself jumping into the snow to save his own skin while Micah screamed in the smoke.

Daniel looked into Grant’s terrified eyes.

"I’m not running through the window anymore," Daniel said softly.

Without a second of hesitation, Daniel grabbed Grant by the collar of his heavy jacket, dragging the groaning man forty feet down the alleyway to absolute safety behind a concrete dumpster.

"Stay down!" Daniel ordered Grant.

Then, Daniel turned around, pulled his wet woolen scarf tightly over his nose and mouth, took a deep, shuddering breath, and charged straight into the burning, gas-filled utility shed!
