Chapter 1 - The Midnight Negotiation

The nursery was quiet save for the gentle hum of the white noise machine and the soft, rhythmic breathing of two exhausted adults sleeping soundly in the adjacent master bedroom. Inside the wooden crib, bathed in the pale glow of a nightlight, six-month-old twins Leo and Liam lay face-to-face. To anyone watching through the baby monitor, they were merely infants caught in a random moment of wakefulness. But behind their wide, innocent blue eyes lay sharp, fully formed adult consciousnesses, complete with memories, complex reasoning, and an acute awareness of their parents' mounting stress.
Leo blinked his big eyes, staring intently at his brother in the yellow pajamas. His gaze flicked toward the door leading to the hallway, then back to Liam. His brow furrowed with mischievous intent as he gurgled softly, forming silent words in his mind before vocalizing a low, rasping baby whisper. "They're sleeping. Let's cry."
Liam, dressed in blue, gave a slow, deliberate shake of his head. His expression was one of profound exasperation, mirroring a tired older brother dealing with an impulsive sibling. "No, leave them alone."
Leo tilted his head, his plump cheeks bunching up as confusion washed over his tiny face. "Why?"
Liam glanced over the railing of the crib, pointing a chubby finger in the direction of the master bedroom where their parents, Mark and Sarah, lay collapsed across the mattress like discarded coats. "They've been tired all week. Dad missed his promotion review, and Mom hasn't slept more than three consecutive hours since we got home from the hospital."
Leo crossed his chubby arms over his chest, letting out a tiny huff of defiance that resulted in a small bubble of saliva popping near his lip. "But I want to cry. I feel like screaming at the top of my lungs just to see how high the decibels go."
"Cry tomorrow," Liam retorted, his tone utterly flat and pragmatic. "Why are you always stopping me?"
Liam leaned in closer, his gaze hardening with the weight of seniority. "I was born first. I know best."
Leo let out a silent sigh of pure defeat, his lower lip trembling with theatrical sorrow. He knew arguing with Liam about the two-minute birth order gap was a losing battle. Liam always acted like the patriarch of the crib, armed with an annoying amount of common sense. Yet, looking back at their parents, Leo felt a twinge of guilt. The family finances were tight; the mortgage weighed heavily on Mark's shoulders, and Sarah's freelance design clients were dwindling because she was too exhausted to pitch new projects. The small dramas of daily life were slowly draining the warmth out of their household.
"Fine," Leo whispered back, his voice carrying the distinct cadence of an adult intellectual trapped in a diaper. "No crying tonight. But tomorrow morning, we need to fix Dad's coffee situation. He put salt in his mug yesterday instead of sugar. He's losing his mind."
May you like
"Agreed," Liam nodded slowly, settling back onto his mattress. "Now close your eyes before they wake up and try to change another diaper."
As morning sunlight filtered through the sheer curtains, the house stirred to life with the familiar sound of a frantic alarm clock ringing at 6:00 AM. Mark stumbled out of bed, rubbing his bloodshot eyes, while Sarah dragged herself toward the kitchen, ready to face another grueling day of juggling remote work and infant care. Little did they know, their two baby boys were already wide awake, plotting their very first intervention to save the family from sinking into total chaos.
