Chapter 8 - Twisted Motives

The late-night confrontation left the Anderson home in a state of high alert. Within twenty minutes, two additional police cruisers arrived to search the surrounding neighborhood, while Olivia stayed behind in the living room to take Michael's detailed statement.

Lily sat on the staircase, wrapped in a thick blanket, silently watching the adults speak. She hadn't said a word since the shouting outside woke her. Her small face was unreadable, but her thumb nervously traced the stitched seam of her teddy bear.

Olivia finished writing in her notepad and looked up at Michael, who was pacing back and forth across the rug, a mug of untouched coffee steaming on the coffee table.

"We've issued an urgent felony warrant for protective order violation and stalking," Olivia informed him, her voice low so as not to carry too strongly toward the stairs. "Every unit in the county has her vehicle description and license plate. She can't stay hidden in Portland for long."

"She's unhinged, Olivia," Michael said, stopping his pacing to lean heavily against the back of the couch. "The look in her eyes... it wasn't a mother who misses her kid. It was an addict who lost control. She blames me for her life falling apart."

"When a court severs parental rights, some individuals experience a complete psychological break," Olivia explained calmly. "They can't accept that their own actions caused the outcome, so they project all their anger onto the spouse or the system. But we are taking this very seriously. I've arranged for an unmarked unit to park down the street for the rest of the night."

"Thank you," Michael breathed out a heavy sigh, running both hands over his face. "I just want this nightmare to end. I thought we were done with this two years ago."

Olivia walked over to the staircase and knelt down beside Lily. "Hey kiddo," she said warmly, offering a soft smile. "You okay?"

Lily looked at the police officer who had rescued her two years prior. "Is she going to come back?"

Olivia reached out and gently squeezed Lily's hand. "We aren't going to let her near you, Lily. Your dad is here, I'm here, and half the police force is looking for her right now. You are safe. I promise."

Lily offered a small, tentative nod. "Okay."

After Olivia left to coordinate the search grid, Michael carried Lily back to her room and tucked her into bed. He sat beside her on the edge of the mattress, taking her hand in his.

"I'm sorry you had to hear that tonight, Lily," Michael said softly, his heart aching for the stress his daughter was undergoing.

"It's okay, Daddy," Lily said quietly, looking up at the ceiling lights. "She looked sad... but she also looked scary."

"She's sick in her heart, Lily," Michael explained gently. "And when people are sick like that, they make dangerous choices. But my job is to protect you, and nothing is ever going to change that. I'm staying right downstairs in the living room tonight. If you need anything, just call me."

"Can you leave the door open a little bit?"

"Wide open," Michael promised, kissing her forehead.

While the Anderson home settled into an uneasy quiet, three miles away, in a dimly lit room at the Pines Motel, Laura Anderson stood in front of a cracked bathroom mirror.

The room smelled of stale tobacco and damp carpet. Her clothes were soaked through from the rain, clinging to her thin frame. She stared at her reflection, her eyes bloodshot, dark circles carved deep into her skin.

Over the past eighteen months, Laura's life had completely unraveled. After losing custody and being disgraced in public court records, her wealthy affair partner, Mark, had promptly cut all ties with her to protect his own reputation and marriage. Without financial support, facing public shame, and unable to maintain employment due to her growing dependence on alcohol and prescription pills, she had descended into a spiral of bitterness.

In her twisted mind, she was not the villain of the story. She was the victim.

She convinced herself that Michael had orchestrated the entire scenario—that he had set her up, manipulated Child Protective Services, and turned her own daughter against her out of spite for her infidelity.

"He took everything from me," Laura muttered to her reflection, her teeth grinding together. "My home, my status, my child... everything."

She walked over to the small wooden table in the main room, where several papers were scattered alongside a map of Portland. Among the papers was a printed article detailing Michael’s construction company, including project locations, work hours, and site maps.

Laura had been tracking Michael’s routine for weeks before coming to Portland. She knew exactly where he worked, when he picked up Lily, and where they spent their weekends.

She picked up a burner cell phone from the table and dialed a number she had acquired from an old acquaintance in the Portland underworld—a contact she had made through her former social circles.

"It's me," Laura said when the line connected. "Is it ready?"

A rough, raspy male voice answered over the speaker. "I got the vehicle you asked for. Unregistered, clean tags. But it's gonna cost you double what we agreed on, lady. You look like bad news."

"I don't care about the money," Laura snapped, opening her purse to reveal several stacks of remaining cash she had withdrawn from her liquid savings. "I need the keys delivered to the motel parking lot in thirty minutes."

"Half an hour," the voice grunted before disconnecting.

Laura dropped the phone onto the bed and walked over to the window, peering through the dirty plastic blinds at the rain pouring down outside. A disturbing, cold smile slowly spread across her face.

If the courts wouldn't give her daughter back, and if Michael was going to keep her locked away, then she would take what she believed was rightfully hers by force—and make Michael pay the ultimate price for standing in her way.
