The House Under Birchwood Lane / Chapter 12 / 20

Chapter 12 - The Brother’s Keeper

The rain outside police headquarters fell in a cold, steady drizzle. Ethan and Cordero sat in an unmarked tactical SUV parked across the street from a suburban home located in the Oakridge district—a quiet neighborhood five miles west of Meadow Creek.

The house belonged to Gregory Vance.

"We don't have enough for an arrest warrant yet," Cordero warned, adjusting his tactical jacket. "A record request from four years ago isn't proof of conspiracy to harbor fugitives. We need physical evidence tying Gregory directly to the supplies found in that tunnel."

"He inspected the drainage corridor during the original 1994 construction," Ethan pointed out, staring at the small, ranch-style house through the fogged windshield. "He knew the corridor was never fully capped with solid concrete. He had the keys, the authority, and the blueprint. He set up the hideout for his brother before Marcus even broke out of prison."

"Why?" Cordero mused. "Gregory’s had a clean record for fifteen years. No criminal history, good salary, quiet life."

"Look at his financial records, Ray," Ethan said, holding up a printout he had pulled from the state administrative portal. "Gregory filed for personal bankruptcy three times between 2016 and 2020. He owes over four hundred thousand dollars to high-interest predatory lenders. Marcus promised him a cut of the regional bank heist they were planning."

"Let's go ask him some questions," Cordero said, pulling his badge reel over his belt.

They stepped out of the SUV, their boots splashing through rain puddles as they walked up the concrete driveway. The house was dark, the blinds drawn tight against the dreary morning light. A silver sedan sat in the driveway, its hood cold to the touch.

Cordero stepped onto the small covered porch and rang the doorbell.

No answer.

He knocked firmly three times. "Gregory Vance? This is Lieutenant Cordero, Lake County Police. We need to speak with you regarding an administrative review of county utility records."

Inside, a faint metallic thud echoed from the back of the house.

Cordero’s hand instantly dropped to the retention holster at his hip. "Ethan, step back."

Cordero tried the brass door handle. It was unlocked. The front door swung inward with a slow, agonizing creak.

"Police! Gregory Vance!" Cordero announced loudly, drawing his weapon and stepping across the threshold. Ethan followed closely behind, clutching a heavy tactical flashlight.

The air inside the house was stale, heavy with the smell of old tobacco, unwashed laundry, and something sharp and chemical—the distinct smell of lighter fluid.

"Ray..." Ethan warned, sweeping his flashlight beam across the living room.

The living room was completely ransacked. Filing cabinets had been pulled open, papers tossed frantically across the floor, hard drives removed from desktop computers.

In the center of the kitchen, sitting tied to a wooden dining chair, was Gregory Vance.

His head was slumped forward against his chest. A dark, heavy bruise discolored his left jawline, and a thick strip of duct tape sealed his mouth. His eyes were wide open, staring blankly at the floor in absolute terror.

"He’s alive!" Cordero shouted, rushing forward to check Gregory’s pulse. "He’s conscious!"

Cordero ripped the duct tape from Gregory’s mouth. Gregory gasped violently for air, coughing hysterically, his eyes wild with panic.

"They... they know!" Gregory wheezed, his voice cracking with hysteria. "They came for the ledger! They’re going to burn it all!"

"Who came for the ledger, Gregory?!" Ethan demanded, leaning down. "Who tied you up?!"

Gregory looked up at Ethan, his face wet with tears and sweat. "Victor Kane didn't work alone! The money... the money wasn't just for Marcus! It was for the cartel brokers in Chicago! They think I kept the stash keys!"

Before Cordero could cut the heavy nylon ropes binding Gregory’s wrists, a low, ominous hiss echoed from the basement utility closet down the hallway.

Ethan’s eyes widened. "Ray! The stove gas line! HE SMELLED LIGHTER FLUID!"

A sudden, bright blue spark flashed beneath the hallway baseboard as an automated electrical timer clicked.

"GET DOWN!" Cordero screamed, throwing his body over Gregory Vance.
