Chapter 8 - Elena Came Back with a Daughter

Julian had imagined Elena alive a thousand times since Cassandra’s video.
None of the imagined versions prepared him for the way she said his name.
“Jules.”
He stopped in the hallway.
Nobody else had called him that since the crash.
Elena released the teenager’s hand.
Julian looked at the girl.
Fourteen, maybe fifteen.
Dark hair.
Elena’s eyes.
His own mouth.
He could not breathe.
Elena whispered, “This is Grace.”
The girl stared at him.
Julian’s voice failed.
Thomas stood behind the glass.
He was crying.
Julian looked from Elena to Grace.
“Is she—”
“Yes.”
Elena answered before he finished.
“Your daughter.”
The hallway disappeared.
Julian had been told the pregnancy ended.
Then told a girl was born.
Then told the child might be someone else.
Now she stood ten feet away.
Grace crossed her arms.
“You can stop staring.”
Julian almost laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because the voice was so alive.
“I’m sorry.”
“You keep saying that to people.”
Elena looked at her daughter.
“Grace.”
“What? He does.”
Julian nodded.
“She’s right.”
Grace studied him.
“You don’t look like the pictures.”
“What pictures?”
“The ones Mom kept.”
Elena closed her eyes.
Julian wanted to ask why she had kept photographs while letting him bury her.
Instead he said, “Are you safe?”
Grace glanced at the police.
“Apparently that’s everyone’s favorite question.”
He nearly smiled again.
Elena had taught her sarcasm.
Of course.
They moved into a private conference room.
Marco stayed outside.
Thomas remained separated.
Julian sat across from Elena.
Grace refused to sit beside either adult and chose the far end of the table.
Julian respected the distance.
“Why did you disappear?”
Elena folded her hands.
“Because your father’s network was hunting anyone who had copies of the master ledger.”
“My father was already dead when you crashed.”
“His people were not.”
“Thomas?”
“Thomas saved me.”
Julian looked toward the wall.
“He also lied to me.”
“Yes.”
“For thirteen years.”
“Yes.”
“Did you ask him to?”
Elena’s eyes filled.
“Yes.”
That hurt differently.
“Why?”
“Because the crash wasn’t an accident.”
Julian said nothing.
Elena explained.
She had been driving to meet a federal investigator.
A truck forced her off the road.
Thomas reached the wreck before police.
He found her conscious.
Pregnant.
Terrified.
She told him the ledger copies were hidden.
Then labor began from the trauma.
Grace was born prematurely that night.
The hospital record was hidden through the same network Elena wanted to expose.
“I became what I hated,” Elena whispered. “I used a false identity to save my baby.”
Julian looked at Grace.
She stared at the table.
“Who tried to kill you?”
“I believed Gabriel.”
“He denies it.”
“I know that now.”
“Who do you believe now?”
Elena looked toward the door.
“Caleb.”
Julian frowned.
“Caleb Ross would have been what, twenty?”
“Twenty-two.”
“Working for Thomas?”
“Working for whoever paid.”
“Why would he target you?”
“He didn’t decide. He drove.”
“Who hired him?”
“That’s what I’ve spent thirteen years trying to prove.”
Grace interrupted.
“Mom.”
Elena stopped.
The girl looked at Julian.
“She does that.”
“What?”
“Turns everything into an investigation when she’s scared.”
Elena’s expression tightened.
Grace continued.
“She didn’t come back because of you.”
Julian nodded.
“I didn’t assume she did.”
“She came because Lily is in danger.”
“Grace.”
“No.”
The girl turned toward her mother.
“You keep making promises for me too.”
Elena went silent.
Julian saw the pattern immediately.
Protection becoming control.
Even Elena.
Even after everything.
“What do you want to say?” he asked Grace.
She looked surprised.
Then suspicious.
“Why?”
“Because you’re in the room.”
The answer seemed to unsettle her.
She said, “Lily is my cousin.”
Julian waited.
“Cassandra is my sister.”
Yes.
“So Lily is Cassandra’s daughter.”
“Yes.”
“And someone wants Lily because she has something Cassandra gave her.”
Julian leaned forward.
“What?”
Grace looked at Elena.
Elena said, “Tell him.”
“A locket.”
Julian pictured Lily’s dance dress.
She wore no locket at the gala.
“Nora has it?”
“No. Lily does.”
“Where?”
Grace almost smiled.
“She hides things in shoes.”
Of course.
The missing ballet shoe.
The brass key.
A child taught by fear to make her clothing into safes.
“What does the locket open?”
“Nothing.”
“What’s inside?”
“A number.”
Grace wrote on a sheet of paper.
11-3-8-4-7.
Julian frowned.
Elena explained.
“It’s a retrieval code for a private records vault my lawyer created years ago.”
“What records?”
“The master ledger.”
Julian stared.
“Why give it to Lily?”
“I didn’t.”
“Who did?”
“Cassandra.”
Of course.
Cassandra had used the gala to bring Lily close to Julian, knowing Elena’s dance would force questions.
“Why not come to me directly?”
Elena laughed sadly.
“Because until three days ago, I didn’t know whether you were part of it.”
That hurt.
It was also rational.
Julian’s surname had purchased silence for generations.
“Now?”
“Now I think someone is trying to kill you for the same reason they tried to kill me.”
“Which is?”
“You’re trying to dismantle the system.”
Julian thought of his legal corporations.
Compliance departments.
Audits.
He had believed he was cleaning family money.
Maybe someone inside the old network saw reform as destruction.
Grace suddenly stood.
“I’m hungry.”
The room paused.
It was such an ordinary sentence.
Julian realized none of them had eaten.
He called for food.
Grace watched him.
“You just order people around?”
“Yes.”
“That seems unhealthy.”
Elena covered a laugh.
For one second, the room felt almost like a family that had lost thirteen years and did not know how to stand in the same light.
Then Julian’s phone buzzed.
Nora.
He answered.
“Where are you?”
Adrian’s voice came instead.
“Julian, listen carefully.”
“Put Nora on.”
“She’s here. So is Cassandra.”
“Location.”
“I’m sending it.”
“Why now?”
“Because Elena surfaced.”
Julian looked at her.
Adrian continued.
“And because Caleb knows.”
“What does he know?”
“That the locket is with Lily.”
Julian’s blood chilled.
Lily was in a police-protected hospital wing.
Margaret sat with her.
Marco’s men guarded the corridor.
Still, every “safe” room had failed so far.
Julian called Marco.
No answer.
Again.
Nothing.
Grace saw his face.
“What?”
Julian ran.
The protected room was three floors down.
The hallway door stood open.
One security guard was unconscious from a blow to the head.
Alive.
Margaret was on the floor beside the sofa, dazed.
Lily was gone.
Again.
Julian’s heart became ice.
On the wall someone had written in black marker:
THE CHILD OPENS THE VAULT.
Elena arrived behind him.
She looked at the empty room.
“No.”
Grace grabbed her hand.
Margaret pushed herself upright.
“He wore a police uniform.”
“Caleb?” Julian asked.
She shook her head.
“No.”
“Who?”
May you like
Her face went white.
“Marco.”
