Chapter 9 - The Woman Who Saw the Van

Anna Price was not dead. She had changed her surname and moved to Wisconsin after a violent dispute with Owen's business partner. Charles explained that Anna had worked as a driver for the foundation, transporting supplies to family residences. Mara trusted her because she kept receipts when other employees were told to throw them away.

Helen located Anna through an attorney who represented her in an unrelated employment case. Anna agreed to meet in a public office after receiving assurances that her contact information would not be shared with the Mercer family.

She arrived on December twenty-sixth wearing a plain navy coat. She looked at Daniel for a long moment before sitting down.

"Mara asked me to watch the gray van," Anna said. "She thought someone was following her. I wrote down the plate. It belonged to a subcontractor Owen used for property inspections."

"Did you see the crash?" Daniel asked.

"No. I saw the van turn after her at the intersection. I was two cars back. By the time I got there, the road was blocked. I can't tell you what caused it."

Daniel had imagined this meeting ending with a single answer. Instead, it gave him a lead and another painful uncertainty.

Anna produced a dated notebook and photographs showing the van near Mara's office on three separate days. She also had a voicemail from Mara asking her to meet at Hawthorne the next morning. Helen documented the materials and arranged to provide them to investigators. She made no claim that they proved a deliberate collision.

"Why did you disappear?" Daniel asked.

"Owen told me I'd be blamed for taking foundation money. Then someone came to my apartment and left a picture of my son outside his school. I went to my lawyer and moved."

She hesitated. "Mara wanted you to know something else. The account in June's name wasn't only for stolen grants. It was also receiving payments from a trust your father created before he left. Someone was using the real deposits to hide the false ones."

Daniel brought that information to the auditors. The preliminary review showed two streams of money mixed together: legitimate trust distributions and transfers requiring further investigation. The distinction mattered. June had not stolen anything; her identity had been used without her knowledge.

At home, Daniel tried to make Christmas happen a day late. June opened a puzzle, a new winter coat, and a music box that played the first two lines of the bell song. She asked to keep the old coat too. Daniel said yes.

"Will Grandma go to jail?" she asked.

"I don't know what the investigators will decide. But she won't be allowed to hurt you while we wait."

"And Aunt Vivian?"

"She has to answer for what she did."

June fitted two puzzle pieces together. "I want her to tell the truth."

Daniel watched her small hands. He had spent years thinking money and a large house meant security. June wanted something he could not purchase: adults who said what happened and meant what they said.

That evening, Owen was detained for questioning after investigators executed warrants connected to the foundation records. Helen cautioned Daniel that questioning was not a conviction. Vivian provided further documents through counsel. Eleanor's attorney announced that she denied wrongdoing.

Then the digital-forensics specialist called. The recovered video from the intersection showed the gray van following Mara's car, but the view of the collision was obstructed by a delivery truck. Another camera captured the van stopping two blocks away. A passenger stepped out and made a call.

"Can you identify the passenger?" Daniel asked.

"Not reliably from this angle," the specialist said. "But there's a distinctive silver cane."

Daniel remembered a silver cane leaning against Eleanor's chair at every Christmas dinner. She had used it since a fall two years earlier.

Before he could tell Helen, the hotel desk called. A woman had arrived asking for Daniel. She carried a silver cane and said her name was Mara Mercer.
