Chapter 2 - A Name She Shouldn't Know

Twenty-three days later, Lily saw Marcus Webb outside her classroom and forgot how to breathe.

Her teacher had just returned the paper butterflies the children made for spring. Lily's butterfly had one blue wing and one yellow wing because she couldn't choose. She was still deciding where to hang it when the office called her name.

"Your father is here," the secretary said kindly.

Lily remembered her father's last visit: the slammed cupboard, her mother's trembling hands, and the command not to tell anyone what she'd heard. She set the butterfly down. Her classmates kept coloring while the teacher walked her to the office.

Marcus waited in the front vestibule wearing a familiar camel-colored coat. Two unfamiliar men stood behind him. They were big, neither smiled, and one kept looking toward the school exits. Marcus opened his arms as though the preceding weeks had consisted of nothing more serious than a business trip.

"There's my girl. Get your things. We're going for a drive."

Lily stopped six feet away.

"Where's Mommy?"

"She's busy. Come on."

"She said I have to ask first."

Marcus's smile hardened. He reached for her backpack, which hung from the secretary's chair. "I'm your father. You don't have to ask her every time."

The secretary lifted the clipboard from the counter. "Mr. Webb, I'm sorry. The current authorization says Lily is released to Ms. Hart only, and we have a safety note requiring us to contact administration before any changes."

"I'm on her birth certificate," Marcus said. "Call whoever you need. I'm taking my daughter."

Lily began backing toward her teacher. At the office windows she glimpsed the school courtyard and, beyond it, a black sedan arriving at the curb. A tall man emerged from the passenger side. She remembered his dark suit, his rough hands, and the fact that he had counted dance steps without getting angry when he made a mistake.

"Borrowed Daddy!" she screamed.

Luca turned at the sound. He had come to the school because Emily Hart had left a message on his private security line that morning, asking him to meet her and the principal about a safety concern. The appointment was for noon. The urgency in her voice had made him arrive early.

He crossed the courtyard but stopped at the entrance, where the principal held the door. He could see a little girl running toward him. She threw herself against his legs, and he crouched to catch her.

"Hey, Button's friend," he said quietly. "Tell me what's happening."

She buried her face in his shoulder. "Don't let him take me. Please."

Luca's gaze moved to the vestibule. Marcus Webb looked ready to explode. The two men behind him were now watching the doors instead of the child. Luca lifted Lily but did not move past the principal.

"Call the police," he told his security chief, Anton. "And keep everyone away from the classrooms."

Marcus heard him. "You have no business here. Put her down."

"I'm waiting for her mother and the police," Luca replied. "You can explain your position to both."

One of Marcus's companions shifted his jacket. Anton noticed and stepped between him and the students passing through an adjacent hallway. The principal triggered the school's security protocol. Interior doors closed. A teacher gently guided the frightened children away from the windows.

No punches were thrown. Nobody made a cinematic dive for a gun. The real terror was quieter: forty seconds during which a school full of children waited to learn whether the adults outside would behave like adults.

When two patrol officers arrived, Marcus was still arguing. He insisted the school was unlawfully withholding his daughter. The officers separated the men, asked everyone to keep their hands visible, and checked the companions' permits and weapons. One had a concealed handgun; the other had a second weapon in his vehicle. Both were escorted outside while the situation was assessed.

Lily clung to Luca until her teacher brought a chair and Button, which had been retrieved from her classroom cubby. Only then did her grip loosen.

The teacher pulled the blinds down so the child could no longer see the police cars. She set Lily's unfinished butterfly on the desk and offered a box of crayons. Lily chose neither blue nor yellow. For a little while, she only watched the adults' faces, trying to decide which expression meant she was safe. Luca stayed beside her without asking questions she might feel obligated to answer.

"Did I get you in trouble?" she asked him.

"No. You asked for help. That's what you're supposed to do."

He hated that she needed the reassurance.

The principal brought a printed emergency-contact form into the conference room. Her hands were trembling almost as much as Lily's. "Ms. Hart updated this four months ago. We called her, but she hasn't answered yet."

Anton unfolded the form and went very still.

At the bottom, in urgent block letters, Emily had written: DO NOT RELEASE LILY TO MARCUS WEBB IF HE ARRIVES UNEXPECTEDLY. CONTACT LUCA MORETTI THROUGH HIS SECURITY OFFICE.

Below the instruction was a number fewer than a dozen people possessed.

Luca read the form twice. When he'd danced with Lily at the gala, he'd introduced himself using only his first name. Emily had behaved as though they were strangers, yet this document was dated months before the dance. There was no innocent way to explain her possession of his security number.

"Where did she get this?" Anton asked.

"That's what I'd like to know."

Through the glass, Marcus watched them with naked fury. He mouthed something Luca couldn't hear. Lily pressed herself against his arm.

"Mommy told me a rule," she whispered.

"What rule?"

"If he came back with the men, don't go in his car. Find my teacher. Or find you."

Luca took care not to let his alarm reach his face. "Did Mommy tell you why?"

Lily nodded, then shook her head. "She said grown-up secrets aren't for little kids. But if Daddy came back, it means he found her secret box."

Luca's phone vibrated. Anton read the screen first.

A message from Emily: IF MARCUS IS THERE, DON'T TRUST WHAT HE SAYS ABOUT THE BABY. PLEASE KEEP LILY WITH THE PRINCIPAL UNTIL I ARRIVE.

A second message followed seconds later.

IF I DON'T MAKE IT, THE BLUE ENVELOPE EXPLAINS EVERYTHING.
