Chapter 8 - The Night Roman Burned His Empire

Roman did not burn buildings.

He burned leverage.

By sunrise, Mara had received copies of the Black Harbor ledger.

So had three outside law firms.

A federal prosecutor in Washington.

Two investigative journalists.

And an anti-corruption unit Vincent could not easily reach.

Chloe watched from the farmhouse as Roman dismantled fifteen years of power with phone calls.

Illegal shell companies were frozen.

Cash reserves disclosed.

Political payments documented.

Executives suspended.

Every DeLuca security employee ordered to stand down unless protecting civilians.

Marco stared at Roman.

“Your father would haunt you for this.”

Roman looked tired.

“He already has.”

By afternoon, headlines exploded.

DELUCA HOLDINGS OPENS INTERNAL RECORDS TO FEDERAL AUTHORITIES

MASSIVE CORRUPTION NETWORK ALLEGED

MAYORAL CANDIDATE CONNECTED TO SECRET PAYMENTS

Vincent responded exactly as Roman expected.

He blamed Chloe.

At 6:00 p.m., a statement appeared through a friendly news outlet claiming Chloe Mercer was a disgruntled former bookkeeper who had manipulated Roman DeLuca romantically and fabricated evidence to extort his company.

Chloe read it twice.

Then laughed.

Roman looked over.

“What?”

“Three months ago Tommy told me nobody would believe me because I was crazy.”

Her laughter disappeared.

“Apparently they upgraded the vocabulary.”

Roman sat beside her.

“You don't have to read it.”

“Yes, I do.”

“Why?”

“Because hiding from somebody else's version of me is how I ended up with Tommy.”

Roman studied her.

“You're different.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“I'm remembering who I was.”

That evening Chloe made her own statement.

Not glamorous.

No dramatic press conference.

She recorded a video at the kitchen table.

“My name is Chloe Mercer.”

Her hands shook.

She left that in.

“For three years, a man I trusted used my identity to move money through companies I did not know existed.”

She described financial abuse.

Control.

Isolation.

Forgery.

She did not describe every bruise.

She didn't need to.

“I am not ashamed that somebody deceived me.”

Her voice became steadier.

“I am ashamed only that I believed silence would make me safer.”

Roman watched from the doorway.

Chloe finished:

“If you are living with someone who tells you nobody will believe you, understand something.”

She looked directly into the camera.

“That sentence is not proof you are powerless. It is proof they are afraid of what happens when you speak.”

The video spread faster than Vincent's accusation.

By midnight, thousands of women were sharing it.

Some told their own stories.

Roman said nothing when Chloe finished reading them.

He simply placed coffee beside her.

At 1:13 a.m., Tommy called.

Chloe answered.

Roman did not stop her.

“Hey, baby.”

Her skin crawled.

“What do you want?”

“You've made this bigger than it needed to be.”

“No.”

“I can fix it.”

“You can't even fix your personality.”

Tommy laughed.

“You always were funny when you thought someone powerful was protecting you.”

Chloe looked toward Roman.

He was across the room deliberately giving her space.

“Roman isn't protecting me right now.”

Tommy paused.

“What?”

“I answered the phone myself.”

Silence.

“What do you want, Tommy?”

He became cold.

“Your father.”

Chloe's heartbeat changed.

Thomas had been relocated again.

“Where is he?”

“With Uncle Vincent.”

Chloe stood.

Roman saw her face and approached.

Tommy continued.

“Vincent wants the original ledger.”

“The government already has copies.”

“He wants the physical book.”

“Why?”

“Because there's something in it Roman hasn't found.”

Chloe covered the phone.

“My father.”

Roman became still.

She put the call on speaker.

Tommy laughed.

“Hello, Mr. DeLuca.”

“Thomas.”

“Trade.”

Roman's voice went cold.

“Location.”

“Old Kessler freight terminal. Brooklyn.”

“Proof Thomas Mercer is alive.”

A video arrived.

Thomas sat tied to a chair.

Blood on his shirt.

Conscious.

Chloe's knees weakened.

Tommy continued.

“Midnight.”

“I'm coming,” Chloe said.

“No,” Roman answered simultaneously.

She glared.

Tommy laughed.

“Still controlling people, Mr. DeLuca?”

Roman closed his eyes.

Chloe saw the battle happen inside him.

Then he looked at her.

“You decide.”

Tommy went silent.

Chloe did too.

Roman continued.

“If you want to go, I'll help you go safely.”

That mattered more than either of them could say.

“I’m going.”

Roman nodded.

“Then so am I.”

Midnight.

Brooklyn waterfront.

The old terminal looked abandoned.

Roman brought only Marco visibly.

Federal agents waited several blocks away, alerted through Mara.

Chloe carried the ledger inside a waterproof bag.

Vincent stood beneath warehouse lights.

Seventy.

Immaculate gray suit.

Beside him stood Tommy.

Thomas Mercer sat twenty feet away.

Alive.

Vincent smiled.

“So this is the girl who collapsed an empire.”

Chloe looked at him.

“No.”

She glanced at Roman.

“He did that himself.”

Vincent's smile disappeared.

Roman stepped forward.

“Release Thomas.”

“Ledger first.”

Chloe held it up.

Vincent's eyes followed.

“There is something inside this book you missed.”

Roman said nothing.

Vincent laughed.

“Page 312.”

Chloe opened it.

One sealed paper had been glued beneath the binding.

Roman carefully removed it.

A signed document.

Alessandro DeLuca.

Vincent Kessler.

A contract.

Roman read it.

His face changed.

“What is it?” Chloe asked.

Vincent answered.

“Proof that Alessandro never intended Roman to inherit everything.”

Roman looked up.

Vincent smiled.

“Half the DeLuca empire belongs to me.”

Marco swore.

Roman kept reading.

Then began laughing.

Vincent's smile faded.

“What?”

Roman handed the document to Chloe.

She read the date.

Then the witness signature.

Thomas Mercer.

Thomas looked up from the chair.

“It isn't real.”

Vincent went pale.

Thomas continued.

“He forced me to prepare it after Alessandro died.”

Roman's smile disappeared.

Vincent drew a gun.

Everything happened at once.

Tommy grabbed Chloe.

Roman moved.

Marco shouted.

Vincent pointed the weapon toward Thomas.

Chloe drove her heel backward into Tommy's shin.

He cursed.

She twisted away.

Tommy caught her arm.

Roman reached them.

One punch dropped Tommy.

Vincent fired.

The bullet struck Roman.

Chloe screamed.

Roman fell.

Federal agents stormed the doors.

Vincent froze.

Thomas kicked the leg of his chair into Vincent's knee.

The gun fell.

Marco tackled him.

Tommy tried to run.

Chloe stood directly in his path.

For one second they looked at each other.

The man who had controlled three years of her life.

The woman he had spent those years making smaller.

“Move,” Tommy snarled.

Chloe stepped aside.

Not because she was afraid.

Because six federal agents were behind her.

Tommy ran directly into them.

Roman lay on the concrete floor.

Blood spread across his white shirt.

Chloe dropped beside him.

“No.”

His eyes opened.

“Shoulder.”

“You were shot.”

“Again.”

“This is not funny.”

“I disagree.”

Her hands shook as she pressed fabric against the wound.

Roman winced.

Then looked toward Tommy being handcuffed.

“Chloe.”

“What?”

“You stopped running.”

Tears filled her eyes.

She looked at Tommy.

Then back at Roman.

“Yes.”

May you like

“I noticed.”

And despite the pain, Roman smiled.
