Chapter 3 - The Dead Man on the Payroll

By morning, the storm had trapped everyone inside the estate.

Snow buried the drive. The gates were sealed by ice. Even if Nicholas had wanted Richard removed, no vehicle could safely reach the main road.

So the mansion became a pressure cooker.

Richard was confined to his office with security posted outside.

The staff gathered in the breakfast room.

Emily insisted on attending.

Dr. Walsh objected.

Nicholas objected more quietly.

Emily won by refusing to stay in bed.

“I’m not the evidence,” she told him. “I’m a witness.”

Nicholas looked at her for a long moment.

Then he handed her his coat.

“Fine. But wear this.”

“It weighs more than I do.”

“Good. Maybe it’ll keep you in the chair.”

For the first time since the previous night, Emily smiled.

The staff meeting was ugly.

Not loud.

Honest.

Rosa admitted Richard had been shaving overtime for nearly a year.

Mr. Ellis said vendor invoices never matched deliveries.

A groundskeeper named Thomas said Richard charged staff cash for “employment processing” even though Grimm Holdings handled hiring centrally.

Nicholas listened without interrupting.

That bothered Emily more than anger would have.

When everyone finished, he said, “You were afraid to tell me.”

Nobody answered.

Rosa finally said, “We don’t see you, sir.”

Nicholas’s eyes narrowed slightly.

She continued anyway.

“Mr. Caldwell told us every complaint went through him. He said you didn’t want staff bringing small problems upstairs.”

Nicholas leaned back.

“Did I ever say that?”

“No.”

“Then why believe him?”

Rosa looked at the table.

“Because powerful men usually prefer not to be bothered.”

Emily watched the sentence land.

Nicholas did not defend himself.

“That’s fair,” he said.

Dario entered carrying a tablet.

“We restored part of the deleted footage.”

The screen showed the entrance hall.

Emily dropping the vase.

Richard approaching.

Richard grabbing her arm.

The sound was gone, but the body language was unmistakable.

Then the image skipped.

A later fragment showed Richard opening the door and forcing Emily outside.

Nicholas watched once.

Then again.

His face never changed.

But his hand slowly closed around the edge of the table.

Dario said, “There’s more.”

He pulled up a terminal log.

Richard had not deleted the footage alone.

The command came from a remote account.

V.MORROW_ADMIN.

Nicholas stood.

“That account was shut down six years ago.”

Dario nodded. “Someone reactivated it last month.”

Emily asked, “Who was Victor Morrow?”

Nicholas looked toward the windows.

“My father’s lawyer.”

“Why does everyone think he’s dead?”

“Because I watched his casket go into the ground.”

That answer silenced the room.

Later, Nicholas told Emily the rest in the library.

Victor had handled the Grimm family’s legal and financial structure for three decades. Six years earlier, investigators discovered he was selling information to rivals. Before Nicholas could confront him, Victor’s car exploded on a highway outside Newark.

DNA confirmation came through dental records.

Case closed.

Except dead men did not log into payroll systems.

Emily sat near the fire with a blanket around her shoulders.

“You think Richard works for him?”

“I think Richard works for money. Men like him rarely care who signs the check.”

“Why steal tiny amounts from maids if there are ninety-thousand-dollar transfers?”

Nicholas looked at her.

“That’s the question.”

Emily thought about it.

Then she said, “Testing.”

“What?”

“You steal seventy dollars from someone who can’t afford to fight you. If nobody notices, you steal more. Staff payroll was the test.”

Nicholas’s expression sharpened.

Emily continued. “Richard wasn’t making money from us. He was learning how closely anyone watched the books.”

Dario, standing near the door, said, “She’s right.”

Nicholas looked almost annoyed that two people had reached the conclusion before him.

Emily smiled faintly.

“You can survive it.”

Before Nicholas could answer, Mr. Ellis spoke from the far end of the table.

“There’s something else.”

Every head turned.

The chef twisted his wedding ring. “Two months ago, Richard ordered me to sign delivery receipts for meat that never arrived. Said the supplier had sent the wrong truck and we’d correct it later.”

“Did you?” Nicholas asked.

“No.”

“How much?”

“About twelve thousand dollars over three invoices.”

Rosa whispered, “Oh my God.”

A younger server raised her hand as though they were in school. “He did that with flowers too.”

Another staff member added, “And laundry.”

The room changed from confession to pattern.

Emily watched Nicholas realize the scale. Not one corrupt house manager shaving wages. A system.

He turned to Dario. “Lock every vendor account tied to Caldwell approval. Nobody deletes anything. Nobody calls anyone outside except counsel and police.”

Dario nodded.

Nicholas looked back at the staff. “And if your wages were shorted, Grimm Holdings will repay every dollar before the week ends.”

Mr. Ellis said quietly, “With respect, sir, it isn’t just the money.”

Nicholas met his eyes.

“I know.”

Emily believed he did.

That was the moment she understood why the room had stayed silent around him before. Fear and respect could look identical from a distance. The difference was what a powerful person did after someone told the truth.

Nicholas looked almost annoyed that two people had reached the conclusion before him.

Emily smiled faintly.

“You can survive it.”

His mouth twitched.

Then an alarm sounded from the west hall.

Dario moved first.

Nicholas followed.

Emily should have stayed put.

She didn’t.

They reached Richard’s office to find Arthur on the floor, conscious but dazed.

The office window stood open.

A rope of knotted curtains hung from the second floor.

Richard was gone.

On his desk lay one sheet of paper.

Nicholas picked it up.

A message had been written in block letters.

YOU SHOULD HAVE LET THE GIRL FREEZE.

Emily stared at it.

Nicholas folded the page once.

May you like

Then he looked at Dario.

“Find him before the storm does.”
