Chapter 6 - The Doctor Who Collected Dead Men’s Secrets

Old Harbor Medical sat beside the Patapsco River like a building Baltimore had tried to forget.
Broken windows reflected gray morning light.
The emergency entrance had been chained for years.
Tessa entered through the ambulance bay carrying the ledger.
Luca walked beside her despite the pain.
Marco and Renzo remained outside with their men.
Harland had demanded only Tessa and Luca.
Tessa suspected that meant he was more frightened than confident.
Dangerous men often became predictable when afraid.
They reached the old surgical theater.
Evelyn sat tied to a chair.
Stephen Harland stood behind her.
He looked exactly as Tessa remembered from hospital meetings.
Silver hair.
Expensive glasses.
Gentle voice.
A physician administrators loved.
Two armed men stood near the exits.
“Tessa.”
Harland smiled.
“You’ve caused extraordinary trouble.”
“You sabotaged a ventilator.”
“I corrected a historical mistake.”
Luca’s voice became quiet.
“My survival?”
Harland looked at him.
“Yes.”
The answer contained no emotion.
Tessa felt Luca stiffen.
Harland continued.
“My father spent twenty years cleaning up after your family.”
“My family paid him.”
“Your father threatened to expose him.”
“So he helped Antonio kill him.”
Harland shrugged.
“Men like our fathers believed loyalty existed. It never did.”
Tessa held up the ledger.
“This?”
Harland’s smile disappeared.
“That destroyed my father.”
“No. Murder destroyed him.”
His eyes hardened.
“Give it to me.”
Tessa looked at her mother.
“You release her first.”
Harland laughed.
“You’re bargaining with the wrong man.”
“No.”
Tessa stepped forward.
“I think you’re bargaining with the wrong nurse.”
Luca glanced at her.
Harland frowned.
Tessa continued.
“You had access to Luca’s hospital systems. You had employees under pressure. You had twenty-five years to find this ledger.”
She raised it.
“And you still needed me.”
Harland’s eyes narrowed.
“That means you don’t know what’s inside.”
“I know enough.”
“You know nothing.”
“Then why are you afraid?”
His smile vanished completely.
Tessa understood.
He wanted more than the ledger.
“There’s another copy.”
Harland said nothing.
That was confirmation.
Daniel would never preserve evidence in only one place.
Tessa looked at Evelyn.
Her mother gave the smallest nod.
Harland noticed.
He grabbed Evelyn’s shoulder.
“Where?”
Evelyn looked up at him.
“My husband was smarter than your father.”
Harland struck the back of her chair.
Luca moved.
One gunman raised his weapon.
Tessa caught Luca’s arm.
“Don’t.”
Harland pointed at her.
“Tell me where the copy is.”
“I don’t know.”
“You’re lying.”
“No.”
For once, she truly wasn’t.
Then Evelyn said:
“The copy was never paper.”
Tessa stared.
Harland did too.
Evelyn smiled despite the fear in her face.
“Daniel recorded everything.”
The cassette tapes.
Tessa understood.
The three tapes in her mother’s house had seemed incomplete.
Maybe they were.
Maybe they were keys to something larger.
Harland swore.
“Where?”
Evelyn looked at Luca.
“Ask him.”
Luca froze.
“I don’t know.”
“Yes, you do.”
Evelyn’s voice softened.
“You just don’t know that you know.”
Harland pressed the gun toward Evelyn.
“Enough riddles.”
Tessa’s heartbeat thundered.
Luca stared at the floor.
Then something shifted in his face.
“The church.”
Evelyn closed her eyes.
Tessa looked at him.
“What church?”
“Saint Agnes.”
Luca spoke faster.
“Daniel used to take me there after meetings with my father. He repaired the sound system.”
Evelyn whispered:
“Good boy.”
Harland heard it.
His expression became murderous.
He lifted the gun.
Everything happened at once.
Tessa threw the ledger.
Not toward Harland.
Toward the lights.
The heavy book struck an old switch panel.
The theater went dark.
Luca pulled Tessa down.
A gun fired.
Evelyn screamed.
Another shot echoed from the rear entrance.
Marco.
His team stormed inside.
Tessa crawled toward her mother.
Someone grabbed her ankle.
Harland.
She kicked free.
He reached again.
Luca hit him from the side.
Pain tore across Luca’s face as his wound reopened.
Harland slammed him against a table.
Tessa seized a metal instrument tray and shoved it between them.
The crash distracted Harland.
Marco tackled him.
Seconds later, both gunmen were disarmed.
Evelyn was free.
Tessa dropped beside Luca.
Blood stained his shirt.
“You idiot.”
He breathed through the pain.
“Nice to see you too.”
“You tore your stitches again.”
“I was being helpful.”
“You were being stupid.”
He looked at her.
“Your mother’s alive.”
Tessa’s anger disappeared.
She pressed her forehead briefly against his.
“Thank you.”
Luca closed his eyes.
For a moment, neither moved.
Then Harland laughed from the floor.
Marco had him restrained.
“You think this ends with me?”
Luca looked over.
Harland smiled.
“Antonio built a network you don’t even understand.”
Renzo entered.
Harland’s smile widened.
“Ask your cousin.”
Renzo stopped.
Luca’s eyes hardened.
Harland continued.
“Ask him who has been financing your organization for seven years.”
Tessa looked at Renzo.
He had gone pale.
Marco rose slowly.
“What is he talking about?”
Renzo said nothing.
Luca stood despite Tessa’s protest.
“Renzo.”
His cousin looked at him.
And Tessa understood immediately.
Harland had not lied.
Renzo was hiding something.
Again.
“Tell him,” Harland said.
Renzo exhaled.
“I borrowed money.”
Luca stared.
“From whom?”
Renzo looked toward the river.
“The Bellandi family.”
Marco swore.
Luca’s face became dangerous.
The Bellandis were the Vesceris’ oldest rivals.
Renzo continued.
“After the federal seizures seven years ago, our legitimate companies were collapsing.”
“So you borrowed from our enemy.”
“To keep twelve hundred people employed.”
“You should have told me.”
“You would have refused.”
“Yes.”
“And half the waterfront would have lost their jobs.”
Luca stood silent.
Harland smiled.
“And now the Bellandis own more than his businesses.”
Everyone looked at him.
May you like
Harland delivered the final blow.
“They own the debt secured against Luca’s entire harbor operation.”
