Chapter 8 - Why Adriana Vanished

Damian did not hug her.

Adriana did not try.

They stood ten feet apart in the quiet church.

“You're alive.”

“Yes.”

“You let me think you were dead.”

Tears filled her eyes.

“Yes.”

“Thirty years.”

“I know.”

“No.”

His voice sharpened.

“You don't know.”

Hannah remained near the door.

Silent.

Present.

Damian continued.

“I buried you without a body.”

Adriana flinched.

“I know.”

“I spent years believing I forgot your face because I was a bad son.”

“Damian—”

“My father told me cancer took you.”

“I know.”

“Stop saying that.”

Adriana lowered her head.

Damian's anger broke through.

“Why?”

She looked at him.

“Because your father would have killed me.”

Silence.

Damian stared.

“My father loved you.”

“Yes.”

“That doesn't answer me.”

“No.”

Adriana took a breath.

“He loved me and believed that gave him the right to decide everything.”

Hannah looked down.

Damian heard the echo immediately.

Control disguised as protection.

“He discovered I had been moving money out of Russo accounts.”

“For Moretti?”

“For you.”

She explained.

Damian's father had begun expanding into drugs.

Adriana opposed it.

She feared their son would inherit not an empire but a death sentence.

So she secretly moved legitimate business profits into AR Holdings.

A trust for Damian.

When her husband discovered it, he confined her.

Guards.

Drivers.

No independent accounts.

“He said he was protecting me.”

Adriana’s voice cracked.

“I knew what protection felt like by then.”

She escaped with help from Lorenzo Moretti's father.

Not because she loved him.

Because he was the only rival powerful enough to get her out.

“Why leave me?”

The question came from the eight-year-old boy still living somewhere inside Damian.

Adriana cried.

“I tried to take you.”

“What happened?”

“Your father threatened everyone who helped me.”

“So you abandoned me.”

“Yes.”

No excuse.

That hurt more.

She continued.

“I believed leaving would keep you safe.”

“It didn't.”

“No.”

“Dad turned me into him.”

Adriana looked at him.

“Not completely.”

“How would you know?”

“I watched.”

Damian stared.

“What?”

“From a distance.”

Photographs.

School records.

News reports.

Business filings.

She knew everything.

His first arrest.

His father’s murder.

Damian taking control.

His engagement.

“You watched me become someone you were afraid of.”

“Yes.”

“And stayed hidden.”

“Yes.”

He walked away.

Hannah followed him outside.

The harbor wind was cold.

Damian stood beside the church steps.

“I shouldn't have come.”

“Yes, you should.”

“I hate her.”

“Maybe.”

“She abandoned me.”

“Yes.”

“Stop agreeing.”

Hannah almost smiled.

“What do you want me to say?”

“That she had a reason.”

“She had a reason.”

“Was it good enough?”

“I don't get to decide.”

Damian looked at her.

Again.

Choice.

He exhaled.

“Why are you always irritatingly reasonable?”

“Low salary. I compensate emotionally.”

He laughed despite himself.

They returned inside.

Adriana had one more secret.

The ambush.

She had discovered Marcus Dane’s connection to Bruno.

But Marcus was not the architect.

Neither was Moretti.

Neither was Vivien.

The person coordinating everything was Carlo’s younger brother.

Anthony Benedetti.

Damian froze.

“Anthony is dead.”

“No.”

Carlo had believed his brother died six years ago after disappearing during a federal investigation.

Adriana slid photographs across the pew.

Anthony in Montreal.

Anthony in Boston.

Anthony meeting Bruno.

Anthony entering a Moretti property.

“He blamed your father for ruining Carlo's life,” Adriana said.

“Why attack me?”

“Because you became your father’s successor.”

Damian looked at the photograph.

Anthony wanted the Russo organization destroyed.

Not conquered.

Destroyed.

The fake paralysis had encouraged him.

Bruno thought he was taking power.

Moretti thought he was gaining territory.

Vivien thought she was protecting family interests.

Everyone was being manipulated.

Damian called Carlo.

No answer.

Again.

Nothing.

He felt cold.

“Hannah.”

She understood immediately.

They ran outside.

Carlo's tracking signal was stationary at a rest area thirty miles south.

Damian drove.

When they arrived, Carlo's SUV sat crooked.

Driver door open.

Blood on the pavement.

No Carlo.

His phone remained under the seat.

On the screen was a message.

BROTHER FOR BROTHER.

Damian closed his eyes.

Anthony had Carlo.

The trap was no longer about territory.

It was personal.

Adriana gave Damian an address.

An abandoned textile mill in Rhode Island that Anthony had used years earlier.

Damian wanted to leave immediately.

Hannah stopped him.

“You're angry.”

“Yes.”

“You'll make mistakes.”

“He has Carlo.”

“I know.”

“Then move.”

“No.”

Damian stared.

Hannah stood her ground.

“Think.”

He wanted to shout.

Instead he breathed.

What would Anthony expect?

Damian rushing in.

Guns.

Violence.

A predictable mafia boss.

So Damian did something Anthony would not expect.

He called the FBI.

Adriana stared.

Hannah smiled faintly.

“You're learning.”

“I hate this.”

“I know.”

The rescue operation happened before dawn.

Federal teams entered from the north.

Russo security from the south.

Damian went through a maintenance tunnel Adriana remembered from old property files.

They found Carlo tied to a support beam.

Alive.

Anthony stood behind him with a pistol.

Carlo looked at Damian.

“Boss.”

Anthony laughed.

“You brought government agents?”

Damian stepped into the open.

“I brought witnesses.”

“You sound weak.”

“Maybe.”

“You used to solve problems yourself.”

“I'm trying something new.”

Anthony pressed the gun toward Carlo.

“He chose you over me.”

Carlo shouted:

“You disappeared!”

Anthony's face twisted.

“You chose Russo!”

“He saved my life.”

“His father destroyed ours.”

Damian raised both hands.

“My father is dead.”

“So should you be.”

Anthony moved the weapon.

Hannah's voice came from behind Damian.

“Then why isn't he?”

Everyone turned.

Damian's heart stopped.

She was supposed to remain outside.

Anthony looked at her.

“Who are you?”

“The maid.”

Carlo actually laughed.

Anthony frowned.

That half-second of distraction mattered.

Carlo slammed backward.

Damian lunged.

The gun fired into the ceiling.

Federal agents entered.

Anthony went down.

Alive.

Handcuffed.

Carlo rolled onto his back.

“You brought Hannah?”

“I did not.”

Hannah approached.

“You're welcome.”

Damian stared at her.

“We are going to discuss your relationship with instructions.”

“Later.”

She looked at Carlo.

“You bleeding anywhere important?”

“Only my dignity.”

Good.

Anthony was arrested.

Bruno surrendered two days later.

Marcus Dane was captured at the Canadian border.

Moretti negotiated immunity for information and lost most of his criminal infrastructure anyway.

Vivien’s family withdrew completely.

For the first time in months, the war quieted.

But Damian faced a different problem.

Adriana wanted no money.

No title.

No return to New York.

She wanted only the chance to know her son.

Damian did not know whether he could give it.

Hannah told him:

“You don't have to decide today.”

He stared at her.

“You're annoyingly fond of that principle.”

“What?”

“Choice.”

She smiled.

“It's useful.”

Then Damian asked the question he had avoided.

“What if I choose you?”

May you like

Hannah’s smile disappeared.

The room became very quiet.
