Chapter 5 - THE NAME BEHIND THE FIRE

Clara's lips trembled.
A tear slipped down her cheek.
Theo looked between them.
"Daddy?"
Alessandro barely heard him.
He stared at the woman behind the counter.
His voice broke.
"Clara?"
She closed her eyes.
And began to cry.
For several seconds, nobody moved.
Alessandro took one step forward.
Then another.
His hand trembled as he reached toward her face.
Clara flinched.
He stopped immediately.
That tiny movement hurt him almost as much as seeing her alive.
His wife had once run into his arms whenever he came home.
Now she was afraid of him.
"Clara," he whispered again.
She shook her head desperately.
"Please..."
His face crumpled.
"Oh, God."
He reached toward her but kept his hands open at his sides.
"Is it really you?"
She couldn't answer.
Not with Theo watching.
Not with the bakery windows facing the street.
Not when she had spent four years being told that one wrong move would cost her son his life.
Theo stared at his father.
Then at the woman.
He looked confused.
Frightened.
"Daddy... why are you calling her Mommy's name?"
Alessandro's eyes filled with tears.
He opened his mouth.
But Clara suddenly grabbed his wrist.
Her fingers were shaking violently.
She leaned closer and whispered so quietly that only he could hear:
"Don't tell him. Please. They're still watching us."
Alessandro went completely still.
"What?"
Clara's face was pale.
Her eyes darted toward the window.
"Please, Alessandro. If they know you found me, they'll hurt Theo."
His expression changed.
The shock remained.
But something colder began to emerge beneath it.
"Who?"
Clara shook her head.
"I don't know."
"Who did this to you?"
Tears streamed down her face.
"Please. Not here."
Alessandro looked toward the window.
A black sedan was parked across the street.
Its engine was running.
He hadn't noticed it when he arrived.
Now a man in the driver's seat was holding a phone toward the bakery.
Taking photographs.
Alessandro's jaw tightened.
He slowly turned back toward Clara.
"How long?"
She swallowed.
"What?"
"How long have you been alive?"
Clara lowered her head.
"All of it."
He stared at her.
"Four years?"
She nodded.
Alessandro felt something inside his chest tear open.
Four years.
Four birthdays.
Four Christmas mornings.
Four anniversaries spent standing beside her grave.
Four years of watching their son cry himself to sleep.
All while his wife was alive somewhere.
Alone.
Terrified.
Trapped.
His voice became barely recognizable.
"Why didn't you come home?"
Clara looked at Theo.
Then back at him.
And whispered the words that would haunt Alessandro for the rest of his life.
"Because they told me they'd kill our little boy if I ever tried."
Alessandro's expression went blank.
For a moment, he couldn't move.
Then he looked down at Theo.
Their son was standing beside the bakery table, happily holding the last piece of his apple pie.
Completely unaware that his mother was only a few feet away.
Completely unaware that someone had stolen four years of his childhood.
Completely unaware that the family he'd spent every night praying for was finally together in the same room.
Alessandro looked back at Clara.
His eyes filled again.
He wanted to hold her.
Wanted to ask a thousand questions.
Wanted to tell Theo that his mother had come home.
But then Clara's gaze shifted toward the window.
The black sedan was pulling away.
Her face turned white.
"They saw us."
Alessandro reached for his phone.
He called his head of security.
"Rafael."
"Yes, boss?"
"There's a black sedan heading east from Rosewood Bakery. Have the security team identify it without approaching my son."
"Understood."
"And send a discreet protective detail to the bakery."
"Right away."
Alessandro ended the call.
Clara stared at him.
"What are you doing?"
He looked into her eyes.
For the first time in four years, he allowed himself to believe that the impossible had happened.
His wife was alive.
His son's mother was alive.
And somebody had deliberately taken her from them.
"I'm not letting anyone hurt you again," he whispered.
Clara began to cry harder.
But before either of them could say another word, Theo tugged at his father's sleeve.
"Daddy?"
Alessandro looked down.
The boy was smiling.
"Can Miss June come home with us?"
Both adults froze.
Theo looked at Clara.
Then back at his father.
"Please?"
His little voice trembled.
"She makes me feel happy."
Clara covered her mouth.
Theo continued innocently.
"And when she hugs me, it feels like Mommy came back."
Alessandro closed his eyes.
A tear rolled down his cheek.
Then he gently rested his hand on his son's shoulder.
He looked at Clara.
She was silently begging him not to reveal the truth.
Not yet.
He understood.
But what neither of them knew was that the photograph taken from the black sedan had already reached someone inside the Moretti organization.
A man sitting in a luxurious office on the top floor of Moretti Tower.
A man who had helped arrange Clara's disappearance four years earlier.
A man who had stood beside Alessandro at her funeral and pretended to grieve.
A man who was supposed to be the family's most trusted protector.
Victor Moretti.
Alessandro's younger brother.
Victor stared at the photograph of Clara standing beside Theo.
His face drained of color.
He had been assured she would never escape.
He had been assured she would never return.
Now, in one photograph, four years of carefully constructed lies were beginning to collapse.
His phone rang.
He answered immediately.
"Yes?"
A nervous male voice spoke.
"Sir, there's a problem."
Victor tightened his grip on the phone.
"I can see that."
"The woman has made contact with the boy."
Victor closed his eyes.
"And my brother?"
There was a pause.
Then the man answered.
"He recognized her."
Victor slowly rose from his chair.
For the first time in years, genuine fear crossed his face.
Because Clara Moretti wasn't merely a woman who had escaped captivity.
She was the only living witness who could connect Victor to the fire that destroyed his brother's family.
And if Alessandro learned the truth, Victor would lose everything.
He stared at the photograph one final time.
Then whispered into the phone:
"Four years ago, I made the mistake of letting her live."
He paused.
May you like
His voice became cold.
"This time, make sure the entire family disappears."
