Chapter 4 - The Voice in the Storage Unit

The speaker crackled above them.

Mateo found it first.

A cheap black unit had been taped beneath the metal desk, connected to a prepaid phone.

Aaron’s voice came through again.

“Walk out with the drive. Alone.”

Khloe stared at the device.

Lorenzo’s expression did not change.

Mateo looked toward the corridor.

“Building’s locked down.”

A guard’s voice came through his earpiece.

“Two vehicles just left the rear lot. No plates.”

Aaron continued through the speaker.

“If Marchesi is standing beside you, tell him this has nothing to do with him.”

Lorenzo almost smiled.

Khloe looked at him.

“He knows you’re here.”

“He guessed.”

“No. He knows.”

She pointed at the ceiling.

“There must be a camera.”

Mateo started scanning.

Lorenzo walked slowly into the unit.

He saw it in the corner.

A screw head that reflected too cleanly.

He plucked the hidden camera from the wall, turned it toward his face, and spoke quietly.

“Now it has something to do with me.”

Then he crushed it under his shoe.

The phone beneath the desk went dead.

Khloe flinched at the snap.

Lorenzo turned back to her.

“Open the drive.”

“It might be encrypted.”

Mateo handed her a laptop from the security bag.

Khloe plugged it in.

A single folder appeared.

BENNETT AUDIT.

Inside were hundreds of files.

Invoices.

Internal city memos.

Bank transfers.

Photographs.

Audio clips.

Names.

Khloe scrolled.

Her father had built a map.

The conspiracy was not one thing.

It was a machine.

City contracts were awarded to shell companies controlled by Elias Crowe.

Those companies billed for work that was never performed.

The money moved through restaurants, construction firms, and freight businesses.

Police officers protected the shipments.

Councilman Wright pushed zoning and permits.

Deputy Superintendent Vane shut down investigations.

Aaron Miller handled witnesses.

Khloe’s hand stopped moving.

There was a folder with her name on it.

KHLOE.

She clicked.

A PDF opened.

Date: four months earlier.

The document was a surveillance report.

Her workplace.

Her grocery store.

Her friend Sara’s address.

Her father’s storage unit.

Then one line at the bottom.

MILLER HAS DOMESTIC ACCESS. MAINTAIN PRESSURE UNTIL BENNETT COPY LOCATED.

Khloe went white.

Lorenzo read the line twice.

Something cold moved behind his eyes.

Aaron’s abuse had not only been cruelty.

It had been assignment.

A strategy.

An officer had been told to maintain pressure on a woman in her own home until she surrendered evidence.

Khloe made a sound like she had forgotten how to breathe.

Lorenzo reached for the laptop.

She pulled it away.

“No.”

“Khloe.”

“No.”

Her voice broke.

“Don’t close it.”

“I wasn’t.”

“I need to see.”

“You’ve seen enough.”

“No.”

She looked at him.

“For two years I thought I was stupid.”

The words came too fast now.

“I thought I had chosen wrong. Stayed too long. Missed signs. I thought every time he hurt me it was because I had done something wrong enough to make a good man become bad.”

Her hand shook over the trackpad.

“But he came to me on purpose.”

Lorenzo did not answer.

There was nothing safe to say.

Khloe clicked another file.

An audio recording.

Her father’s voice filled the storage unit.

“If you are hearing this, I was right.”

Khloe stopped moving.

Daniel Bennett’s voice was tired but steady.

“I found a network inside city procurement. It reaches the police department, council offices, private contractors, and at least one organized-crime family.”

Lorenzo’s eyes went to the photograph showing his father.

Daniel continued.

“I do not yet know whether Vittorio Marchesi was part of the theft or whether his businesses were used without his knowledge. The payments under his name do not match his signatures.”

Lorenzo leaned closer.

Khloe looked at him.

The audio went on.

“Elias Crowe is the common link. If Crowe learns I made a duplicate of the audit, he will use police resources to recover it. Do not trust Deputy Superintendent Vane.”

A pause.

“Do not trust anyone who says they are protecting you until they prove it.”

The recording ended.

Khloe stared at the blank screen.

Lorenzo looked away first.

That last sentence landed too close.

Mateo spoke from the doorway.

“Boss.”

Lorenzo turned.

“We have company.”

Blue lights flashed through the narrow window at the end of the corridor.

Then more.

And more.

Six police vehicles surrounded the facility.

A voice boomed outside.

“Lorenzo Marchesi! Exit the building with your hands visible!”

Mateo muttered a curse.

Khloe’s eyes widened.

“They’re arresting you?”

“No.”

Lorenzo looked toward the lights.

“They’re trying to separate us.”

He handed the drive to Khloe.

“Put it somewhere they won’t find.”

She stared at him.

“Where?”

He pulled off his watch.

The back had a hidden compartment large enough for a micro drive.

Khloe blinked.

“You carry that?”

“I have trust issues.”

Despite everything, a tiny laugh escaped her.

Lorenzo inserted the flash drive and replaced the back.

Then he buckled the watch around Khloe’s wrist.

It hung loose.

“Keep your sleeve down.”

“What are you going to do?”

“Walk out.”

“They’ll arrest you.”

“They might.”

“And me?”

“They won’t touch you.”

“You can’t guarantee that.”

Lorenzo met her eyes.

“No.”

That was the second time he had refused to promise what he could not know.

Khloe realized, suddenly, how rare that was.

Aaron promised everything.

Then broke it.

Lorenzo promised almost nothing.

And so far, he had kept every word.

The police shouted again.

Lorenzo turned to Mateo.

“No weapons visible.”

Mateo frowned.

“You serious?”

“I want body cameras.”

Understanding dawned.

They walked out together.

The rain had stopped.

Uniformed officers lined the lot.

Deputy Superintendent Charles Vane stood in front.

Gray overcoat.

Silver hair.

The same face from Sara’s old photograph.

Beside him was Aaron Miller.

Khloe stopped.

Aaron smiled.

Not lovingly.

Possessively.

“There she is.”

Lorenzo moved half a step in front of her.

Aaron noticed.

“So that’s how this is?”

Khloe’s fingers closed around the hidden drive inside Lorenzo’s watch.

Vane raised a hand.

“Mr. Marchesi, we have a warrant to search the unit and detain everyone present.”

Lorenzo looked at the paper.

“Signed by which judge?”

Vane’s face tightened.

Lorenzo smiled faintly.

“You should know I read.”

Aaron stepped forward.

“Khloe, come here.”

She did not move.

His tone changed.

The tone she knew.

“Now.”

Her body reacted before her mind did.

Shoulders tightening.

Breath stopping.

Lorenzo felt it beside him.

He did not touch her.

He simply said, “You don’t have to.”

Aaron’s eyes sharpened.

Vane looked between them.

Then Khloe did something nobody expected.

She stepped out from behind Lorenzo.

Not toward Aaron.

Past Lorenzo.

Into the open space between both sides.

She lifted her chin despite the bruises around her neck.

“My name is Khloe Bennett.”

Every body camera faced her.

“My father was Daniel Bennett, city auditor.”

Vane went pale.

“And Detective Aaron Miller has been abusing me for two years while searching for evidence my father left behind.”

Aaron lunged.

Only one step.

But it was enough.

Three body cameras captured Lorenzo’s men staying still.

Two uniformed officers captured Aaron reaching for Khloe.

And Officer Pete Nolan, standing near the second cruiser, stepped between them.

“No.”

Aaron stared at him.

Nolan’s voice shook.

“I said no.”

Vane barked, “Officer, stand down.”

Nolan looked at Khloe’s neck.

Then at Aaron.

May you like

“No, sir.”

For the first time in two years, Aaron Miller looked around and realized the room—this time an entire parking lot—was no longer his.
