Chapter 8 - The Red Suitcase

The red suitcase appeared in a traffic-camera image outside a storage facility near Philadelphia.

Police traced Vanessa’s vehicle there and obtained a warrant. The unit contained old company files, spare phones, and boxes of photographs taken around the Whitlock estate.

Ethan recognized his own bedroom window in one picture.

Mara recognized the nursing home.

“This wasn’t just about the will,” she said.

The investigator agreed.

Someone had monitored the family for years.

Among the files was a contract between Gregory Voss and Daniel Price. It described a consulting arrangement that paid Gregory for managing “sensitive estate transitions.” The dates began before Evelyn’s death.

The investigator did not reveal all the evidence, but he confirmed that the documents were relevant to the ongoing inquiries.

Vanessa was located at a hotel in New Jersey and arrested on charges connected to Mara’s assault and witness intimidation. Her attorney denied the allegations.

Ethan watched the report without satisfaction.

Mara asked, “What did you expect to feel?”

“Relief.”

“Do you?”

“Not yet.”

They visited Charles at his attorney’s office. He had agreed to cooperate with investigators concerning the foundation fraud.

Ethan placed the brake invoice on the table.

“Did you hire Gregory?”

Charles stared at it.

“No.”

“Did you know he worked on Mom’s car?”

“No.”

“Did you know Vanessa was involved?”

Charles looked sick.

“She told me she had taken care of Daniel.”

Ethan went still.

“What does that mean?”

“I thought she meant the documents.”

“You thought?”

Charles buried his face in his hands.

Mara spoke.

“Your habit of not asking questions destroyed people.”

Charles looked up.

“You think I don’t know that?”

“I think you know now because it finally reached you.”

He had no answer.

Before leaving, Ethan asked one final question.

“Did Mom know Vanessa was dangerous?”

Charles nodded.

“She wanted her fired.”

“Why didn’t you do it?”

“Vanessa knew about the accounts.”

“So you kept her close.”

“Yes.”

“And brought her into my life.”

Charles closed his eyes.

“Yes.”

Ethan walked out.

That evening, Mara received an unexpected visitor at the apartment: her foster mother, Helen Bennett. They had not spoken in six years after a dispute about the adoption.

Helen stood in the doorway holding a battered biscuit tin.

“I heard what happened.”

Mara did not move.

“You knew Evelyn was my mother.”

“Yes.”

“You let me believe she abandoned me.”

Helen’s eyes filled.

“She asked us to tell you when you were eighteen. Your father was afraid Charles would take you away.”

“You could have told me after Dad died.”

“I should have.”

Mara considered shutting the door.

Instead, she asked what was in the tin.

Helen opened it.

Birthday cards.

Every year from age one to thirty-four.

All written by Evelyn until the year she died. After that, the envelopes were empty, but Helen had continued saving them.

Mara picked up the card marked sixteen.

Inside, Evelyn had written: YOU ARE NOT A SECRET BECAUSE YOU ARE SHAMEFUL. YOU ARE A SECRET BECAUSE I WAS AFRAID.

Mara began crying.

Helen did not ask to be forgiven.

She sat beside her until the tears passed.

Then she handed Mara the final item in the tin.

A photograph of Evelyn standing beside a young woman with a newborn baby.

On the back was a name.

VANESSA VOSS.

Mara looked up.

May you like

“Whose baby?”

Helen whispered, “That’s what Evelyn was trying to find out.”
