Chapter 6 - The Unwelcome Visitor

The name printed at the bottom of the bank statement wasn’t just familiar; it was someone who had sat at our Thanksgiving table every single year for the past decade. Someone who smiled warmly, kissed my cheek, and praised my apple pie while secretly helping orchestrate the financial collapse of my household.
“Marcus Vance?” I whispered, the name tasting like ash on my tongue. “Vanessa’s brother? But... how is that possible? Marcus runs a failing importing business in Boston. He’s always crying about cash flow!”
“He wasn’t crying about cash flow when fifty thousand dollars hit his corporate account from Apex Holdings last Tuesday,” Martin replied grimly, pulling off his glasses and rubbing the bridge of his nose. “According to our forensic accountant, Marcus acted as the intermediary to clean the funds through a network of shell companies before they got funneled into offshore cryptocurrency wallets.”
I sank slowly into the armchair by the fireplace, the weight of the conspiracy crashing down on me. It wasn’t just Daniel’s recklessness or Vanessa’s greed; it was a calculated, multi-tiered family heist designed to strip Robert’s estate down to the studs before his body was even cold.
“They planned this months before Robert passed,” I realized aloud, the pieces finally clicking together in my mind. “Remember when Marcus insisted on helping us digitize Robert’s medical and financial records last winter? He spent three hours in the study alone with the desktop computer.”
“He was installing keylogger software and harvesting administrative passwords,” Martin confirmed, nodding slowly. “Robert was too trusting. He thought because Marcus married into the extended family circle, he had some basic level of decency.”
Before Martin could elaborate further, the harsh glare of headlights swept across the living room windows. A sleek black Mercedes SUV pulled up our gravel driveway, cutting through the darkness with aggressive speed.
Car doors slammed shut—not once, but twice. Heavy, hurried footsteps crunched across the gravel.
Martin stepped toward the front window, peering through the slats of the blinds. His expression darkened instantly. “Well, look who decided to crash the party. Marcus Vance, accompanied by a woman I don’t recognize.”
The doorbell rang—not with a polite chime, but with a furious, sustained pounding that rattled the glass panes.
“Should I call the local sheriff back?” Martin asked, reaching for his phone.
“No,” I said, standing up and smoothing down my skirt with a calm, resolute gesture. I walked toward the front door with steady steps. “Let’s see what excuses my esteemed brother-in-law has prepared for tonight.”
I swung the door open wide. Standing on the porch under the amber glow of the porch light was Marcus Vance, impeccably dressed in an expensive charcoal suit, his hair slicked back. Beside him stood a striking, sharp-featured woman in a crimson designer pantsuit, holding a leather briefcase and wearing an expression of supreme entitlement.
“Eleanor!” Marcus barked, pushing past me into the foyer without waiting for an invitation, his expensive cologne filling the hallway. “What in God’s name is going on? Vanessa just called me from a county holding cell saying Daniel was arrested by federal agents! Have you lost your mind?”
The woman in crimson stepped in right behind him, her heels clicking sharply against the hardwood floor. She didn’t look around in shock; she looked around like an appraiser sizing up a property for immediate liquidation.
“Mrs. Mercer, I presume,” the woman said, extending a manicured hand that I pointedly ignored. “I am Victoria Sterling, senior partner at Sterling & Cole Legal Associates. And we are here to ensure you immediately halt this unlawful harassment of my clients.”
I stared at Victoria Sterling for a long moment, letting the silence stretch until her hand awkwardly dropped back to her side. Then I turned my gaze to Marcus, who was sweating profusely despite the cool autumn air.
“Unlawful harassment, Ms. Sterling?” I asked, my voice carrying a razor-sharp edge. “Is that what we call arresting embezzlers who steal from employee pension funds nowadays?”
Marcus swallowed hard, stepping up beside his lawyer. “Eleanor, you don't understand. Daniel made some bad business bets, sure, but calling the FBI? You’ve ruined our family over a few ledger discrepancies! And furthermore—as Vanessa’s power of attorney regarding estate assets—”
May you like
“Power of attorney?” Martin interrupted smoothly, stepping out from the shadows of the living room doorway like a phantom. “That’s fascinating, Marcus. Especially since Vanessa’s power of attorney was formally revoked by Robert Mercer three weeks before his passing, and you were served notice of that revocation on October 12th.”
Marcus and Victoria Sterling froze in unison. The color drained entirely from Marcus’s face as he stared at Martin, realizing the trap had already snapped shut around him.
