Chapter 4

But apparently, I had been financing the future he planned to share with someone else.

Then I heard the sentence that changed everything.

“When the new money comes in, I’ll end things with her. First, I need her to sign the company guarantees.”

I stopped the recording.

My husband wasn’t simply planning to leave me. He was planning to leave me responsible for his financial obligations.

The documents he had been asking me to sign suddenly seemed very different.

I opened the folder containing the proposed guarantees.

I had postponed signing them because several clauses made me uncomfortable.

Now I understood why.

The documents would expose my personal assets to substantial business liabilities.

And the company receiving the investment wasn’t even entirely controlled by Alistair anymore.

Several ownership interests had recently been transferred to entities I didn’t recognize.

I reached for my phone.

“Gavin, I need you to investigate the company too.”

The next morning, Gavin called while I was sitting in my kitchen.

“Jacqueline, I’ve identified the woman.”

I gripped my coffee mug.

“Tell me.”

“Her name is Paige Bennett. She’s twenty-five. She lives in a luxury apartment in Edina with a three-year-old boy named Matthew Bennett.”

“Matty.”

“Yes.”

I closed my eyes.

“Anything else?”

“She’s listed as a director of a newly formed company called Northbridge Holdings. That company has received several substantial transfers from Alistair’s business.”

I straightened.

“How substantial?”

“Enough that you need to look at the documents I just sent you.”

I opened his email.

There were corporate filings, property records, and a series of financial disclosures.

One document immediately caught my attention.

A luxury apartment had been placed under contract.

The purchasing entity was connected to a family investment trust.

A trust controlled by Martha and George Finch.

My in-laws weren’t merely hiding their son’s affair. They were involved in the financial arrangements surrounding his second family.

I stared at the screen.

Then another detail caught my eye.

Northbridge Holdings had been registered shortly after Alistair began asking me to sign the guarantees.

The timing was impossible to ignore.

If the transactions proceeded as the documents suggested, valuable assets could move into a company associated with Paige while I remained exposed to obligations connected with Alistair’s business.

I called Gavin back.

“Find out whether any other assets have been transferred.”

“Already working on it.”

“And Gavin?”

“Yes?”

“Find everything you legally can about the person who prepared these agreements.”

An hour later, I went to the hospital.

Alistair was sitting upright when I entered.

He smiled.

“There’s my beautiful wife.”

The words made my stomach turn.

I placed a small bag of toiletries beside his bed.

May you like

“How are you feeling?”

“Better. The doctors think I’ll be discharged soon.”
