Chapter 11 - The Gala of Reckoning

The grand ballroom of the Whitmore Plaza Hotel glittered under ten thousand crystal pendants. The city’s elite mingled in designer gowns and bespoke tuxedos, sipping champagne and whispering nervously about the impending corporate restructuring.
I stood near the entrance, wearing a breathtaking midnight-blue silk evening gown that commanded the room without a single word. My father stood proudly by my side, while Arthur Pendelton coordinated with federal agents stationed quietly at the service exits.
The double doors at the end of the grand staircase swung open, and a gasp rippled through the ballroom.
Vivian Whitmore walked down the stairs. She was dressed in an extravagant, heavily sequined silver gown, her face painted with flawless makeup to mask the desperation in her eyes. She had managed to bypass security using an old honorary patron pass, expecting to take the stage and reclaim her throne.
When she reached the main floor, her eyes locked onto me standing near the podium. Her expression twisted into a mask of pure venom.
“What is the meaning of this?” Vivian’s voice cut across the ballroom, amplified by the acoustics of the hall. She marched directly toward me, pointing a trembling finger. “You disgraceful little thief! You have no right to be in this hotel, let alone host this gala! Security! Throw this imposter out!”
Not a single security guard moved. Instead, the doors behind Vivian opened once more, and Special Agent Vance walked in, flanked by two federal marshals.
“Mrs. Vivian Whitmore,” Agent Vance’s voice echoed clearly through the sound system. “You are under arrest for international money laundering, conspiracy to commit federal racketeering, and collaboration with fugitive Richard Sterling.”
The ballroom erupted into sheer pandemonium. Gasps, shrieks, and camera flashes filled the air as guests scrambled backward to distance themselves from the disgraced matriarch.
Vivian turned pale, her manicured hands shaking violently as she looked from Agent Vance to me. “This... this is a frame-up! Claire fabricated these documents! She stole my family’s empire!”
I stepped forward, my voice calm, clear, and carrying effortlessly across the silent room.
“You spent eighteen months telling me I didn’t belong in your family, Vivian,” I said, looking her dead in the eye. “You called my father’s business quaint, you hid my wedding dress, and you left a clown costume to humiliate me in front of two hundred guests. But you forgot one fundamental rule of business: never underestimate an accountant who knows how to read your ledgers.”

Agent Vance placed the cold steel handcuffs around Vivian’s wrists, reading her rights as the flashbulbs blinded her from every angle.
As they led her away in disgrace, Vivian screamed her final defiance over her shoulder: “You haven’t won, Claire! Julian Sterling is coming for you! He owns the final piece of the board!”
