Chapter 7 - The Guard Who Had Been Waiting Thirty Years

Miguel’s father had worked for Walter Bennett.
“He collected debts and delivered cash,” Miguel said. “Things Walter
didn’t want connected to his name.”
Margaret discovered the relationship years later.
“She hired me anyway. She said a man doesn’t inherit his father’s sins
unless he chooses them.”
Arthur asked, “Did you steal from the trusts?”
“No. My father left hidden cash. Margaret and I moved it into the child
accounts.”
“Why secretly?”
“She was afraid old creditors would claim it.”
Arthur shook his head. “More secrets.”
“Yes.”
Miguel handed him the final tapes.
Margaret described how Vanessa had begun asking questions about Arthur’s
estate years before she married Grant. Margaret suspected Vanessa’s
relationship with Grant was never accidental.
Then Margaret mentioned Rose.
Arthur froze.
“My daughter?”
Miguel nodded.
“Margaret found her.”
Arthur listened as his dead wife described Rose’s childhood, Emily’s
birth, and the years of lies Walter had created.
Then Margaret said something unexpected:
“Rose met Vanessa at a charity auction. Vanessa asked too many
questions.”
Arthur immediately contacted Rose.
For the first time in his life, he heard his daughter’s voice.
“If you want to know why Vanessa targeted Emily,” Rose said, “stop
looking at the money.”
“What should I look at?”
“Your will.”
Arthur’s estate documents were examined that night.
Someone had inserted a draft amendment granting Grant expanded control
if Arthur became mentally incompetent.
Arthur remembered the lie employees had been told.
Arthur had dementia.
Vanessa had not merely wanted restaurant money.
She had been preparing a story in which Arthur could be removed while
still alive.
Helen whispered, “If enough doctors and family members supported the
claim, they could have tried to challenge your control.”
Arthur stared at Grant.
“Did you know?”
“No.”
For once Arthur believed him.
Grant looked sick.
“She told everyone Dad was losing his memory.”
Miguel nodded.
“She told me too.”
The poor-old-man disguise suddenly felt less amusing.
Vanessa had already been building a world where nobody believed Arthur
Bennett knew what was happening.
