THE SHADOWED BLOODLINE / Chapter 11 / 30

Chapter 11 - The Syndicate's Ledger

The wind howling off the coast brought no comfort to Mateo Vance as he pushed the stolen black SUV down the winding curves of the Pacific Coast Highway. Beside him, young Aurelio Mendoza sat huddled in a oversized blanket, staring blankly out the window at the distant, dark ocean. The shock of learning that his grandmother was still alive, while his uncle Victor had sent armed mercenaries to murder him, was heavier than any eight-year-old child should ever have to carry.

"Are you sure she's really alive, Mateo?" Aurelio asked softly, his voice barely audible over the hum of the engine. "Why didn't she come for me? Why did she leave me with Uncle Victor for three whole years?"

Mateo kept his eyes locked on the highway ahead, constantly checking his rearview mirror for trailing headlights. "Elena didn't leave you because she wanted to, Aurelio. When Victor poisoned her drink at the anniversary gala, she barely survived. Her doctors barely pulled her back from cardiac arrest. If Victor knew she was breathing, he would have sent a army to finish the job. She had to disappear into the shadows so she could build a strike force to protect you."

"And you?" Aurelio turned his head, looking at Mateo's grim side profile. "Who are you really? Uncle Victor said you were just a hired bodyguard. A mercenary with no conscience."

Mateo let out a harsh, dry chuckle. "Your uncle says a lot of things. I was a captain in the Army Special Forces before your grandmother recruited me five years ago. My father was a man named Senator Harrison Vance—a man who sold his soul to corporate lobbyists decades ago. I left that world because I couldn't stand the fake smiles and knife-stabbing politics. But when Elena Mendoza offered me a job protecting what was left of her family, I accepted because she was the only honest billionaire I ever met."

Suddenly, the SUV's dashboard GPS screen flashed red. An encrypted alert bypassed the car's security system, displaying a short, cryptic message: *THE PACK IS ON YOUR TRAIL. HIGHWAY 1 IS COMPROMISED. TAKE EXIT 42 NOW.*

"Who sent that?" Aurelio gasped, sitting up straight.

"Someone who knows how Victor's security grid works," Mateo muttered, pulling the steering wheel sharply to the right as Exit 42 appeared through the mist. The SUV tires squealed against the asphalt as they veered onto a narrow, unlit mountain road leading into the Santa Monica Mountains.

Behind them, high up on the coastal ridge, two pairs of bright halogen headlights flickered through the heavy fog. Victor's elite strike team was closing in fast, led by Marcus Cole—a former comrade from Mateo's old military unit who had turned traitor for Victor Mendoza's millions.

"Hang on, kid," Mateo said, shifting the vehicle into high gear. "Things are about to get bumpy."

As they drove deeper into the dark canyon, the radio suddenly crackled to life, static giving way to a cruel, familiar voice. "Mateo, old buddy," Marcus Cole's voice echoed through the speaker. "You really think you can outrun the Apex Syndicate? Give us the boy, and Victor will let you walk away with ten million dollars in offshore crypto. Keep running, and we'll bury you both in these hills."

Mateo grabbed the radio mic, his knuckles turning white. "Tell Victor that when I see him next, I won't be running. I'll be coming for his throat."

"Have it your way, captain," Marcus replied coldly.

The chase tore through the dark mountain passes. Bullets began to shatter the rear windshield, spraying glass into the back seat. Aurelio ducked beneath his seat, covering his head as Mateo returned fire with his left hand while keeping his right hand glued to the steering wheel.

Up ahead, a wooden bridge spanned a steep ravine. Mateo's eyes narrowed. He pressed the accelerator flat against the floorboards, speeding toward the wooden structure.

"Mateo! The bridge!" Aurelio screamed.

"Hold on!" Mateo yelled. As soon as the SUV crossed the wooden planks, Mateo pulled the emergency handbrake, spinning the heavy SUV around 180 degrees. He reached into his vest, pulled out a incendiary grenade, pulled the pin with his teeth, and tossed it directly onto the bridge's support beams behind them.

A massive roar of flames erupted into the night sky, engulfing the wooden bridge in a wall of fire just as Marcus Cole's pursuit vehicles reached the opposite cliff edge. The lead chase car slammed on its brakes, skidding to a halt mere feet from the flaming abyss.

Through the wall of fire, Mateo locked eyes with Marcus Cole. Marcus lowered his sunglasses, a dark smile playing on his lips, before making a slashing gesture across his throat.

Mateo threw the SUV back into drive and roared off into the darkness of the mountain pass. They had survived the immediate trap, but the road ahead was long, and the secrets buried deep within the Mendoza family empire were far more dangerous than any weapon Marcus Cole possessed.

"We made it..." Aurelio whispered, trembling as he sat back up in his seat.

"For tonight, kid," Mateo said softly, reaching over to pat the boy's shoulder. "For tonight. But tomorrow, we go on the offensive."

The trail to Santa Fe lay ahead, where the ghost of Elena Mendoza was waiting to reclaim her throne.
