Chapter 3 - What Was Left Behind

"What’s her name?" he asked, his voice barely above a whisper.
Only then did Clara finally stop playing. The last note hung suspended in the air—soft, echoing, and unfinished. She turned her head toward him. Calm. Certain.
And she said the name. "Sarah."
Everything inside Julian shifted. Not violently. Not suddenly. Completely. That name wasn't just a word; it was everything he had meticulously walked away from. Success, control, distance—he had used all of it to build a fortress between himself and his past. He had chosen a different life, leaving behind an unfinished melody, a broken promise, and a life that could have been.
"Why now?" Julian asked, feeling like a man awaiting a long-overdue verdict.
Clara gently rested her fingers back on the keys, tracing them lightly. "She said… you weren't ready before. But you would be… when you heard it again."
Julian remembered the rainy morning he had packed his suitcase. Sarah hadn't cried, nor had she begged him to stay. She had only sat by the piano, looking at him with the exact same serene gaze Clara possessed right now. He had convinced himself he was leaving for the sake of their future, but in reality, he had left out of sheer, unadulterated ambition.
"Did she tell you why I left?" Julian asked, his chest tightening.

Clara shook her head. "She said it doesn't matter."
Another pause, her eyes locking onto his. "She said… you’ll understand what matters now."
