Chapter 5 - Family Betrayals Exposed

The revelation hit the room like a bomb. My mother looked up, her eyes wide with horror. Kyle looked completely bewildered, his mouth hanging open.

"That's a lie!" Frank shouted, his voice cracking as he struggled against the zip ties. "You're fabricating this to destroy me! I'm a decorated officer! I've served this community for twenty years!"

"You've used this community for twenty years," I countered. "You thought you were safe in a small town. You thought the federal government wouldn't notice a few crates of advanced military night-vision optics and tactical rifles disappearing from logistics manifests in Afghanistan and arriving in shipping containers handled by a local logistics company you co-own."

Agent Vance stepped forward, opening his folder. "We have the bank records, Lieutenant Hale. Accounts registered under an offshore shell company in Panama. The deposits align perfectly with the dates of the weapons shipments leaving the military port in Georgia."

"No... no, Frank, tell me it's not true," my mother sobbed, standing up from the sofa. She looked at the man she had lived with for seven years, realizing she didn't know him at all. "You told me that extra money was from your inheritance!"

"It is! She's lying, Ellen!" Frank pleaded, his face twisting into a mask of pure desperation. "She hates me! She's always hated me because I replaced her father!"

"My father died serving his country with honor, Frank," I said, my voice dropping to a dangerous whisper. "Do not bring his name into your mouth. You didn't attack me today because you thought I was a fraud. You attacked me because you saw me on a secure Pentagon satellite phone, and you panicked. You thought the hammer was about to fall. And you were right."

Kyle looked at his father, his voice trembling. "Dad... did you really do that? Is that why you bought that new boat? Is that why you told me to never open those crates in the garage?"

"Shut your mouth, Kyle!" Frank roared, turning his rage onto his own son.

Chief Thomas looked at Frank with disgust. "You're done, Frank. Handcuffing a general was stupid enough, but running a black-market weapons ring under my nose? You're stripped of your rank and your badge effective immediately. I won't protect you from a federal firing squad."

"We're taking him in," Agent Vance said, signaling the soldiers. Two large operators grabbed Frank by his arms and lifted him off the ground as he kicked and screamed, cursing my name as they dragged him out through the shattered front door.

But as Frank was dragged away, he looked back at me with a sickening smile. "You think you've won, Evelyn? You think I'm the only one involved in this? If I go down, this whole town goes down with me. Your little operation isn't as safe as you think."
