Chapter 5 - The Snake in the Corporate Suite

While Marcus and Rachel spent their first night in the county jail sleeping on cold concrete bunks, across town in the gleaming glass tower of Vance & Sterling Capital, panic was setting in.

Marcus Vance was not just a failing investor; he was the senior managing partner of a mid-tier asset management firm that had been quietly running a massive Ponzi-style liquidity scheme behind the backs of its investors.

For months, Marcus had been assuring his primary investors—a syndicate of ruthless venture capitalists led by a notoriously vindictive billionaire named Viktor Petrov—that a massive cash injection from an inherited agricultural estate was about to drop into the firm's escrow accounts.

Viktor Petrov did not wait for Marcus to call him from a jail cell. He found out about the arrest before the evening news cycle even hit local cable.

In the penthouse office overlooking the glittering city skyline, Petrov stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows, swirling amber whiskey in a crystal tumbler. Behind the mahogany desk sat Chloe Dane, Marcus’s terrified executive assistant and secret mistress.

“Explain to me, Miss Dane,” Petrov said without turning around, his voice like grinding ice, “why my five million dollars is currently tied up in a dead-end corporate shell company while your boss is sitting in an orange jumpsuit for beating up an old woman.”

Chloe trembled, clutching her tablet to her chest. “Mr. Petrov, Marcus assured us… he swore that his mother was going to hand over the farm proceeds by this afternoon. He said the power of attorney was foolproof!”

“Foolproof,” Petrov muttered, turning slowly to face her with a chilling, dead-eyed stare. “The man is an amateur playing poker with sharks. He thought he could bully an old farm woman into signing away her life savings while leaving a paper trail wider than the Mississippi River.”

“What should we do, sir?” Chloe whispered, her voice shaking. “The SEC auditors are scheduled for a routine compliance check tomorrow morning at nine o'clock. If they look at the books—”

“There are no books, Chloe,” Petrov interrupted smoothly, walking toward her with measured, predatory steps. “There is only a smoking crater where Marcus’s financial empire used to be.”

Petrov leaned down, resting his hands on the back of her chair. “Marcus promised me collateral. Since he cannot deliver the farm money, someone else is going to have to settle his debts.”

“Who?” Chloe asked breathlessly.

“You, my dear,” Petrov smiled coldly. “Or better yet… let’s pay a little visit to dear old mommy down in the country. If Marcus couldn't squeeze three million dollars out of her, perhaps a more persuasive approach will yield better results.”

Chloe’s breath caught in her throat. She realized with sudden, sickening clarity that she was no longer an employee; she was a hostage in a high-stakes game of corporate warfare where human life had zero value.

“You can’t go after her,” Chloe blurted out. “The state police are guarding that property now! Captain Vance placed a 24-hour protective detail on Eleanor Vance after the assault!”

Petrov chuckled darkly, swirling his whiskey. “State police? My dear Chloe, state troopers wear badges and follow rules. The men I employ wear suits and answer only to me. And Eleanor Vance is about to find out what real pressure looks like.”
