Chapter 2 - The Fall of the Pretender

The sudden blackout plunged the $40 million mansion into an eerie, suffocating silence that lasted for three full seconds before the crowd erupted into a chaotic cacophony of gasps, shouts, and frantic screen-tapping.

The pale, jittery light from over a hundred smartphone screens flickered like fireflies in the dark, casting long, grotesque shadows across the expensive Italian tile flooring.

Chad Harrington stood paralyzed, his mouth half-open in a silent expression of utter disbelief.

The red plastic cup lay shattered at his feet, its contents pooling around his scuffed designer boots like spilled blood.

For a man whose entire existence was built on public adoration, viral clout, and absolute control over his immediate environment, losing the lights was equivalent to losing his soul.

His followers, who had seconds ago been cheering for his dominance, now stared at him with bewildered eyes, their cameras still recording every single second of his humiliation.

'What... what did you do?' Chad stammered, his voice cracking slightly as the alcohol-induced bravado drained entirely from his system.

He reached out a trembling hand, trying to grab Ethan’s shoulder again, but hesitated as the blue glow from Ethan's smartwatch intensified.

'I didn't do anything,' Ethan replied smoothly, his tone laced with chilling sarcasm.

'I simply asked the house to do what it was programmed to do when unauthorized vagrants attempt to commandeer the premises. And as the rightful owner of this estate, I have zero tolerance for squatters.'

The word 'owner' dropped into the heavy night air like a lead weight.

A collective murmur rippled through the surrounding crowd. Whispers bounced from person to person: *Owner? Did he say owner? Isn't Chad's dad the leaseholder? Who is this guy?*

Before Chad could formulate a coherent response, the heavy oak doors leading from the grand foyer burst open.

Floodlights mounted on the upper balconies instantly flared back to life, bathing the pool deck in a harsh, clinical white light.

Security personnel—four massive men clad in sharp black tactical suits bearing the insignia of Apex Global Security—marched onto the deck with synchronized precision.

Their faces were deadpan, their hands resting firmly on their utility belts. They bypassed the terrified influencers and bypassed Chad entirely, marching in a direct line straight toward Ethan Wright.

The crowd parted like the Red Sea before Moses. People scrambled out of the way, terrified of getting caught in whatever federal-level drama was unfolding.

The head of security, a towering veteran named Marcus Vance with a jagged scar across his left cheek, stopped two paces away from Ethan.

To the absolute horror of everyone watching, Marcus snapped into a crisp, flawless military salute.

'Good evening, Mr. Wright,' Marcus boomed, his voice carrying absolute, unquestioning deference.

'We detected an unauthorized system override attempt from the secondary guest terminal. Shall we clear the property immediately?'

Chad Harrington felt his knees buckle. The ground beneath him felt as though it was turning into quicksand.

Mr. Wright? Marcus Vance—the most expensive, ruthless private security contractor in Southern California, a man who normally only answered to billionaires and foreign heads of state—was saluting a guy wearing a faded t-shirt and a backpack?

Chad’s brain struggled to process the seismic shift in reality.

His father, Richard Harrington, was a prominent real estate mogul who had bragged endlessly about leasing this architectural masterpiece for the summer. Richard had paid a staggering $500,000 for a three-month short-term lease.

How could a scruffy nobody in a 10-dollar t-shirt be the owner?

Step by trembling step, Chad forced himself forward, his face flushed with a toxic mixture of humiliation and desperate rage.

'Wait! Hold on a damn minute!' Chad screamed, pointing a shaking finger at Marcus Vance.

'Do you know who my father is? My dad is Richard Harrington! We leased this property legally! This broke loser is a trespasser! Drag him out of here right now or my father will sue your agency out of existence!'

Marcus Vance slowly turned his head, his cold, gray eyes locking onto Chad with the warmth of an arctic glacier.

Marcus didn't even blink. He looked at Chad as if he were looking at a cockroach crawling across a pristine white marble floor.

'Mr. Richard Harrington’s lease agreement was officially terminated via digital addendum clause 14-B exactly forty-eight minutes ago,' Marcus stated flatly, his voice echoing clearly across the silent courtyard.

'Due to multiple gross violations of property covenants, unauthorized commercial filming, and intentional structural abuse, the lease is null and void. You and your guests have exactly fifteen minutes to vacate the premises. Failure to comply will result in physical removal and trespassing charges filed by our legal team.'

The silence that followed was absolute. The influencers lowered their phones, their expressions shifting from entertained spectators to terrified witnesses.

Chad stood frozen, realizing that his entire empire of lies had just collapsed in less than two minutes.
