Chapter 17 - The Nurse Who Locked the Door

The nurse smiled at me like we were sharing a secret.

Then she slid the dead bolt across the NICU door.

Every instinct in my body screamed to stand, run, fight.

My incision answered with white-hot pain the moment I tried.

I gripped the wheelchair arms.

“Who are you?”

She wore pale blue scrubs, a hospital badge, and the calm expression of someone who had rehearsed this moment.

“My name is Celia Ward.”

“Do you work here?”

“Not anymore.”

My eyes went to Lucia’s incubator.

Celia noticed.

“I’m not going to hurt her.”

“That is exactly what people say before hurting someone.”

“I only need a blood sample.”

“No.”

She sighed.

“Elena, please don’t make this dramatic.”

I almost laughed.

“You locked a recovering mother in a neonatal unit and approached her premature baby with a syringe. Drama already arrived.”

Celia’s eyes hardened.

A voice came through my tablet on the floor.

Adrian.

“Elena!”

I looked down.

The feed from the estate was still live.

Lorenzo was watching us through hospital cameras.

Adrian was watching him.

And somehow, through the tablet microphone, he could hear me.

“I’m here,” I said.

Celia glanced at the screen.

“Turn that off.”

“No.”

She stepped toward me.

I grabbed the tablet and held it against my chest.

“You come one step closer to my daughter, this entire conversation goes to federal agents.”

Celia smiled thinly. “They already know I’m here.”

That chilled me.

“What does that mean?”

“It means Lorenzo has owned more people than you realize.”

Onscreen, Nora shouted something in the background.

Adrian’s voice became lethal. “Celia, listen to me.”

She froze.

“You know who I am?”

“Everyone knows who you are.”

“Then you know what happens if you touch my daughter.”

I snapped, “Adrian, stop threatening her.”

He sounded incredulous. “She is standing beside our child with a syringe.”

“I know. Threats will make her panic.”

Celia looked at me strangely.

I kept my voice calm.

“You said you only need blood. Why?”

“For the therapy.”

“Lorenzo’s therapy?”

“Yes.”

“Why do you care if he lives?”

Her expression flickered.

There.

That was the first crack.

“I don’t.”

“Then why risk prison?”

She looked away.

Someone in the hallway tried the locked door.

“Mrs. Hart?” a nurse called.

Celia reached beneath her scrub top and showed me a small handgun.

“Tell them everything is fine.”

My heart pounded.

I looked at Lucia.

Her tiny chest rose and fell.

I could not afford courage that got her killed.

“I’m fine,” I called. “Just feeding time.”

The nurse hesitated.

“Do you need anything?”

“No.”

Footsteps moved away.

Celia exhaled.

I said quietly, “Now tell me why.”

She stared at me.

“My son has leukemia.”

The room changed.

Not because I trusted her.

Because suddenly she became human.

“How old?”

“Nine.”

“What does Lorenzo have to do with that?”

“He promised access to the treatment if I helped him.”

I closed my eyes briefly.

Of course.

He weaponized desperation.

Just like Bellini had weaponized grief.

Just like Rafael had allowed grief to excuse monstrosity.

“This treatment isn’t proven,” I said.

“They showed me results.”

“From whom?”

“Children in Europe.”

“Consent?”

“I don’t know.”

“You do know.”

Her face tightened.

Tears filled her eyes.

“He is dying.”

“I am sorry.”

“Don’t say that.”

“I mean it.”

“You have no idea.”

“I have a premature daughter inside that incubator while a man in another state is trying to harvest her blood. I know enough.”

Celia looked at Lucia.

Her gun hand lowered slightly.

On the tablet, Lorenzo’s voice came through the estate speaker.

“Celia. Complete the draw.”

She flinched.

I realized then that he could speak to her too.

“Don’t,” I said.

“Celia,” Lorenzo repeated. “Your son’s treatment depends on this.”

Her face crumpled.

She stepped toward the incubator.

I moved my wheelchair directly between her and Lucia.

Pain ripped through my abdomen.

I nearly blacked out.

“Elena!” Adrian shouted through the tablet.

I kept my eyes on Celia.

“You’ll have to go through me.”

“I don’t want to hurt you.”

“Good.”

“Move.”

“No.”

She raised the gun.

Her hand shook.

I was terrified.

Not movie terrified.

Not brave terrified.

The ugly kind where your mouth dries out and part of your mind starts begging you to obey.

But Lucia made a tiny sound behind me.

I stayed.

Celia began crying.

“I can’t lose him.”

“I know.”

“You don’t.”

“Then help me make sure neither of us loses our child.”

She stared at me.

“What?”

“Put the gun down. Tell federal agents everything. If the therapy has legitimate value, doctors can evaluate it. Your son does not need blood stolen from mine.”

Lorenzo’s voice boomed through the tablet.

“She is lying to you.”

I raised my voice. “You are done using sick children to build your immortality project.”

Celia looked toward the ceiling camera.

Lorenzo said, “Your son will die without me.”

Celia’s face changed.

A mother recognizes another mother’s breaking point.

This one did not break toward him.

It broke away.

She lowered the gun.

Then dropped it.

The metal hit the floor.

I exhaled for what felt like the first time in an hour.

Celia backed away from the incubator.

“Open the door,” I said.

She did.

Hospital security rushed in immediately.

Celia raised her hands.

“Don’t shoot,” she said. “I surrender.”

They took her into custody.

I rolled to Lucia’s side and put my hand through the incubator port.

“I’m here, baby.”

On the tablet, Adrian’s voice cracked.

“Elena.”

I looked at him onscreen.

He was still standing across from Lorenzo.

“I’m okay.”

His eyes closed.

Then he looked at his grandfather.

Something had changed in him.

Lorenzo smiled faintly.

“You see? She is strong. That is why her bloodline matters.”

Adrian’s face became unreadable.

“No.”

“What?”

“That is why she matters.”

He stepped closer.

“Because she is Elena. Not because of what is in her blood.”

Lorenzo scoffed.

Adrian continued.

“You spent your whole life turning people into assets. Sons into experiments. women into breeding plans. children into treatments.”

He looked directly at the camera.

“And you still don’t understand why none of us belong to you.”

Then federal agents broke through the lower-level doors.

Lorenzo reached for the control panel.

Mara shouted, “Stop him!”

A red warning filled the screen.

ARCHIVE PURGE INITIATED.

Nora screamed from my hospital room, “He’s deleting everything!”

May you like

Adrian lunged across the room.

And the feed went black.
