Chapter 8 - The House Beneath the Church

The address led to an abandoned Catholic retreat center thirty miles outside Chicago.
Julian did not go alone.
Technically, he obeyed the message.
He entered alone.
Dante’s team remained hidden outside.
Federal agents waited farther down the road.
Camille waited in the command vehicle with Violet.
She hated every second.
The retreat building had three floors, a chapel, dormitories, and a basement constructed during the 1950s.
Keller waited inside the chapel.
Julian wore a concealed microphone.
Camille heard everything.
“You came.”
Keller sounded exhausted.
“You threatened women.”
“I protected them.”
“Explain quickly.”
Keller had discovered Renato’s operation four years earlier.
At first he participated voluntarily.
Money.
Debt.
Fear.
All three.
Eventually he tried to leave.
Renato threatened his daughter.
So Keller stayed.
Then Isabella discovered the network.
Keller secretly helped her.
He sent the motel photograph.
He planted clues.
He allowed Violet’s path to intersect with the pharmaceutical van route.
Camille frowned.
“He didn’t expect Violet to find Isabella,” she whispered.
Dante nodded.
“No.”
The cat had done that part herself.
Inside, Keller told Julian that eleven women were being held beneath the retreat center.
Renato planned to move them that night.
“Where is he?”
Julian asked.
Keller hesitated.
“Here.”
Camille sat upright.
Dante cursed.
Then the microphone filled with gunfire.
Not loud, cinematic volleys.
Three sharp cracks.
Silence.
Camille’s heart stopped.
“Julian?”
No answer.
She grabbed the radio.
“Julian!”
Dante ordered his team forward.
Federal agents moved.
Camille stayed exactly six seconds.
Then Violet escaped.
The cat somehow forced open the carrier latch with one paw.
“Violet!”
She jumped from the vehicle.
Camille chased her.
Again.
“This cat is going to kill me.”
Violet ran toward the side of the retreat center.
Not the chapel.
A basement window.
She began scratching.
Camille heard voices below.
Women.
She called Dante.
“Basement west wall. They’re here.”
Agents broke the window.
One by one, terrified women were brought out.
Eleven.
Then twelve.
A teenage girl had been hidden behind a utility partition.
Camille helped wrap blankets around them.
Still no Julian.
Then the chapel doors opened.
Keller stumbled outside.
Blood stained his sleeve.
Not fatal.
Behind him came Julian.
Alive.
Camille nearly collapsed.
Then Renato appeared.
Holding a gun against Julian’s back.
Everything stopped.
Agents raised weapons.
Renato smiled.
Older than Julian.
Similar eyes.
Different soul.
“Tell them to lower the guns.”
Julian did not move.
Renato pressed the weapon harder.
“Do it.”
Julian looked at Dante.
“No.”
Renato laughed.
“Still stubborn.”
Camille stood behind the ambulance.
Violet crouched beside her.
Renato continued.
“You could have had everything.”
“I already had everything.”
“No. You had respect. Family. A clean public image.”
Julian looked toward Camille.
Toward Isabella’s rescued women.
Toward Violet.
“I was wrong.”
Renato’s smile vanished.
“You think these people care about you?”
“No.”
Julian spoke calmly.
“I care about them.”
Then Violet ran.
Straight toward Renato.
Nobody expected it.
Not Camille.
Not Dante.
Definitely not Renato.
The giant cat launched herself against his leg.
He startled.
The weapon shifted.
Julian moved.
Dante moved.
Agents moved.
Three seconds later Renato lay facedown in wet grass with his hands restrained behind him.
Violet stood five feet away.
Tail enormous.
Camille ran toward her.
“You absolute lunatic!”
Then toward Julian.
She stopped inches away.
He looked at her.
“You’re angry.”
“Yes.”
“Good.”
She hit his chest.
Not hard.
Then hugged him.
His arms closed around her.
For the first time since they met, Julian Moretti held someone without controlling anything.
He just held on.
Violet meowed between them.
Camille looked down.
“You too.”
Julian laughed.
Dante approached.
“Sir.”
“Yes?”
“We recovered records from the basement.”
“How many?”
“Enough.”
“For Renato?”
“For everyone.”
Keller survived.
He was arrested too.
Cooperation did not erase his crimes.
But his evidence became essential to dismantling the network.
Renato faced federal charges.
So did dozens of associates.
The women were reunited with families or placed in protected housing.
Leah returned to her mother.
Isabella became a witness.
And for the first time in decades, the Moretti family’s most dangerous enemy was not another family.
It was the truth.
Julian chose not to hide from it.
May you like
That decision nearly cost him everything.
But eventually, it saved what mattered.
