Chapter 5 - Echoes of the Past

The morning sun rose slowly over Chicago, casting a harsh, icy golden glare across the towering glass skyscrapers bordering the frozen shores of Lake Michigan.
At precisely 8:30 AM, an armored black sedan pulled quietly up to the granite curb near the grand plaza of the Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago on LaSalle Street. Sophia sat in the back seat, wearing a tailored dark navy wool coat and oversized designer sunglasses to hide the visible bruising around her eyes. Beside her, Lorenzo wore a dark trench coat, his hand holding hers in a firm, protective grip.
"Are you absolutely certain you want to do this yourself?" Lorenzo asked, searching her face with deep concern. "My men can handle the vault retrieval."
"The safety deposit box utilizes a custom dual-biometric scanner and a rolling 12-digit algorithm that I programmed myself," Sophia explained softly. "If anyone else attempts to access the vault box without my physical thumbprint and retinal pattern, the unit automatically locks down and alerts federal authorities. I have to go inside."
"Marco and two operatives will enter twenty seconds behind you as discreet plainclothes security," Lorenzo stated. "I will be monitoring everything from this vehicle. If anything looks off, press the emergency button on your watch."
Sophia nodded, checking the small silver button on her wristwatch. She took a deep, steadying breath, opened the car door, and walked with quiet grace up the stone steps into the cavernous marble lobby of the bank.
Inside, the bank was filled with morning commuters, financial analysts, and bank guards. Sophia navigated the grand corridors with practiced ease, descending the marble staircase into the subterranean high-security vault section located two floors beneath LaSalle Street.
"Good morning, Ms. Bennett," the senior vault custodian greeted politely, recognizing her from previous visits. "Standard vault access today?"
"Yes, thank you," Sophia replied calmly. She stepped up to the terminal, placing her thumb onto the glass biometric scanner and typing her twelve-digit code into the encrypted keypad.
The massive ten-ton steel vault door gave a low pneumatic hiss as the hydraulic locks disengaged. Minutes later, the custodian handed her a sleek steel deposit box. Sophia brought it into a private viewing room, unlocked it with her key, and retrieved the sleek, black encrypted flash drive resting inside.
"Got you," she whispered, feeling a surge of triumph.
She quickly slipped the drive into the secure inner pocket of her wool coat and turned to exit the viewing room. But as she stepped back into the main vault corridor, she saw Marco standing near the heavy security gate, his hand pressed tightly against his ear piece, his face pale and rigid.
"Ms. Sophia, we have an immediate breach," Marco whispered urgently, grabbing her arm gently and pulling her behind a reinforced wall. "Dante's intelligence team managed to trace your biometric activation signal the moment you logged into the bank system! His mercenaries just breached the underground parking garage!"
Before they could reach the grand lobby elevators, the heavy reinforced glass doors at the end of the vault corridor exploded inward in a shower of lethal shards. Three heavily armed men wearing black tactical gear and ballistic masks burst into the hall, suppressed automatic pistols raised!
"Down! Get down!" Marco yelled, drawing his weapon and firing three rapid rounds, hitting the lead mercenary squarely in the throat.
Chaos erupted throughout the bank vault floor. Custodians and clients shrieked in horror, diving behind heavy steel desks and marble pillars. High-caliber rounds chewed through the polished stone walls, sending clouds of white dust and stone chips flying through the air.
"Lorenzo! We are taking heavy fire in the lower vault hallway!" Marco shouted frantically into his lapel microphone. "Dante sent a strike team!"
"Hold your position! I'm coming down!" Lorenzo’s voice thundered back through the comms channel.
Sophia pressed her back tightly against a thick marble pillar, clutching the encrypted flash drive against her chest. The deafening pops of gunfire and the screams of panicked bystanders echoed terrifyingly through the enclosed subterranean space.
Suddenly, a massive, gloved hand reached around the pillar, grabbing Sophia’s coat collar and yanking her violently into the open hallway! She gasped in pain as a scarred mercenary dragged her against his chest, slamming the cold, hard steel barrel of a handgun against her temple!
"Drop your gun right now, or I blow her brains all over the marble!" the mercenary screamed at Marco.
Marco froze ten feet away, his weapon raised, his eyes darting frantically between the mercenary's finger on the trigger and Sophia’s terrified face.
"Do it! Drop the weapon now!" the mercenary snarled, tightening his chokehold around Sophia’s bruised neck so hard she couldn't breathe.
Sophia’s vision started to black out, but her sharp mind refused to surrender to panic. Remembering the tactical self-defense maneuvers Enzo had shown her during their stolen weekends, she drove her heavy leather heel down onto the mercenary's instep with all her weight, while simultaneously smashing her elbow back into his floating ribs.
The mercenary grunted in sudden pain, his grip slackening for a fraction of a second.
That fraction of a second was all Lorenzo Moretti needed.
The heavy steel elevator doors at the end of the corridor slid open with a chime, and Lorenzo stepped out like a demon unleashed from hell. Without a single moment of hesitation, he raised his custom firearm and fired a single, flawless shot down the center of the hallway.
The high-velocity round struck the mercenary directly between his eyes. The man dropped like a stone, releasing Sophia as he collapsed onto the floor.
Lorenzo sprinted down the hallway, catching Sophia before she fell and sweeping her behind the safety of a heavy steel vault door while Marco finished off the remaining shooter.
"Are you hit? Talk to me, Sophia!" Lorenzo demanded frantically, his gloved hands rapidly scanning her arms, torso, and head for blood.
"I'm okay! I'm not shot! I have the drive!" Sophia gasped, pulling the flash drive from her coat and holding it up in her trembling hand.

Lorenzo looked at the drive, then up at her fierce, brave face. A terrifying, beautiful smile spread across his features.
"Magnificent," Lorenzo whispered, kissing her lips fiercely amidst the lingering gunsmoke. "Now let's go to the Drake Hotel and put my uncle in the ground."
