Chapter 9 - Vivian’s Confession

Vivian Holloway looked nothing like the woman from the porch.
No pearls.
No perfect posture.
No cold smile.
She sat in a small interview room at a federal courthouse wearing borrowed sweatpants and a church volunteer’s coat. Her blond hair was tangled, and there was dried blood near one temple.
Maya entered first.
I watched behind glass with Emily and Alan.
Vivian asked for water.
Then she asked, “Is Emily alive?”
Maya said, “Yes.”
Vivian closed her eyes.
“Did Grant hurt her badly?”
“You were there.”
“I know.”
“You struck her.”
Vivian flinched.
“Yes.”
Emily’s face changed beside me.
Not sympathy.
Recognition of an admission she had been denied for years in smaller ways.
Maya sat across from Vivian.
“Why are you afraid of Sheriff Danner?”
Vivian stared at the table.
“Because Calvin doesn’t work for Richard.”
“Grant says he blackmails Richard.”
“He does.”
“With what?”
“Bodies.”
Silence filled the observation room.
Maya said, “Whose bodies?”
“Some were accidents. Some weren’t.”
“Names.”
Vivian looked at the mirror.
At us.
“Before I answer anything, I want immunity.”
Maya laughed once.
“You participated in unlawful imprisonment and assault. You may be connected to homicide. You don’t get to demand immunity before telling me whether people are in danger.”
Vivian’s mouth trembled.
“Richard will kill me.”
“Richard is hiding.”
“He’s not the one I’m afraid of.”
“Then start earning protection.”
Vivian took a breath.
“Calvin Danner ran a cleanup network. If a donor, politician, contractor, anyone connected to the machine created a dangerous problem, Calvin made it disappear.”
“How?”
“Evidence lost. Witnesses discredited. Medical examiners pressured. Sometimes people vanished.”
“Nora Bell?”
“Richard ordered Nora taken. Calvin arranged the clinics.”
“Laura Mercer?”
Vivian’s eyes closed.
I stepped closer to the glass.
Maya’s voice lowered.
“Did you kill Laura?”
“No.”
“Did Richard?”
“No.”
“Did Thomas Vale?”
Vivian began crying.
“I don’t know.”
“Stop giving me that answer.”
“I met Laura at the hotel. She had the DNA results. She said she was going to tell Daniel everything and expose Richard.”
“What happened?”
“Richard arrived. I had called him.”
I felt Emily recoil.
Vivian continued.
“I thought if Richard knew Emily was his daughter, he would back down. I thought some part of him would remember what he’d done to Laura and feel ashamed.”
“What did he do?”
Vivian looked toward the mirror again.
“I helped Laura escape him twenty-eight years ago.”
Emily’s hand found mine.
“He assaulted her when she worked for his father’s company. She became pregnant. Richard threatened her. I was his fiancée then.”
Maya said nothing.
“I found Laura crying in a restroom. I gave her money. I drove her to another state. I lied to Richard and said she had miscarried.”
“And then you married him.”
Vivian nodded.
“That is the part I cannot explain without sounding like a coward.”
“Try.”
“I loved the life more than I loved the person I had been.”
That sentence seemed to cost her something.
Maya asked, “What happened in Suite 4B?”
“Richard saw the DNA report. He went insane. Not because Emily was his daughter. Because he realized Daniel had raised her.”
“Why did that matter?”
“Richard hated Daniel.”
I frowned.
I had investigated his company, but we had never met face-to-face until years later.
Vivian said, “Thomas Vale had been feeding Richard information about Daniel for years. Richard knew Daniel was the investigator who almost broke the bond scheme.”
Maya leaned in.
“And Laura?”
“Laura threatened to expose everything. Richard grabbed her. I stopped him. Then Vale came in.”
“What did Vale do?”
“He said there was a clean solution.”
My stomach turned.
“What solution?” Maya asked.
Vivian whispered, “He gave Laura something.”
The room went silent.
“In a drink?”
“I don’t know. I left before it happened.”
“Why?”
“Because I was afraid.”
Emily whispered beside me, “She keeps leaving.”
Vivian continued, “I called Laura afterward. No answer. That afternoon I heard she died.”
“Did you report what happened?”
“No.”
“Why?”
“Because Calvin Danner called me before I could.”
“What did he say?”
“He said Laura’s death was natural and would remain natural if I wanted Grant to stay alive.”
Grant.
Maya asked, “What did Danner have on Richard?”
Vivian shook her head.
“Not what. Who.”
“Who?”
“Our first son.”
Emily looked at me.
Grant was not their first?
Vivian’s voice dropped.
“His name was Owen. He died when he was seventeen.”
“How?”
“Officially, a boating accident.”
“And actually?”
“Richard hit him.”
I closed my eyes.
Another child.
Another family matter.
“Richard lost his temper,” Vivian said. “Owen fell down the boathouse stairs. Calvin was a deputy then. He made the scene look accidental.”
“So Danner blackmailed Richard for years.”
“Yes.”
“The Undertaker payments?”
“Fees for cleanup.”
Maya tapped the table.
“Who set the fire at your mansion?”
“I did.”
Emily gasped.
Vivian looked toward the mirror.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?” Maya asked.
“I knew Richard would move Nora. I thought the fire alarm would bring police and give her a chance to escape.”
“You locked Emily upstairs.”
“I was trying to keep her away from Richard.”
“You hit her.”
Vivian’s face crumpled.
“Yes.”
“You watched your son beat her.”
“I told him to stop.”
“You called it discipline.”
Vivian stared at the table.
“I became everything I once helped Laura run from.”
No one spoke.
Then Maya asked the question that mattered now.
“Where is Richard?”
Vivian’s eyes lifted.
“Calvin has him.”
“How do you know?”
“Because Richard called me this morning.”
“From where?”
“A number I recognized from years ago.”
“What place?”
Vivian whispered, “Saint Abel.”
“The charity?”
“It isn’t a charity.”
She leaned forward.
“The children’s home burned down twelve years ago. Richard rebuilt it as a private retreat. There’s an old burial ground behind it.”
Maya went very still.
“What is buried there?”
Vivian looked at the mirror.
“Everyone Calvin couldn’t make disappear on paper.”
My phone buzzed in my pocket.
A secure alert.
Emily’s emergency app.
Not from Emily.
From Nora Bell’s phone.
One live location.
Saint Abel.
May you like
And one text message.
HE KNOWS YOU’RE COMING.
