Chapter 7 - THE FINAL AUDIT

The flight back to New York was a blur of exhaustion, pain, and intense preparation. Using Maya’s secure legal
connections, we managed to bypass regular commercial security and board a private federal transport plane. By the
time we touched down at LaGuardia Airport, my shoulder was bandaged, and my mind was focused on a single,
final objective: the New York City Planning Commission review board.
The meeting was scheduled for 9:00 AM at City Hall.
When we arrived, the grand, marble-walled hearing room was packed with reporters, city officials, and
corporate executives. At the center of the room sat the review board, presided over by Commissioner Thomas
Sterling, a stern man known for his zero-tolerance policy.
To the right sat Celeste Cole, looking radiant and untouchable in a tailored navy suit, flanked by Adrian and a
dozen high-powered attorneys. Adrian’s wrist was still in a brace, his face tense, but Celeste looked like a queen
about to be crowned.
She spotted me walking into the room. Her eyes narrowed into icy slits, but her cold, confident smile didn't
waver. She believed she had already won. She believed her mercenaries in Oregon had neutralized us, or at least
delayed us long enough for the vote to pass.
“Ah, Ms. Vance,” Commissioner Sterling said as I walked toward the presenter's podium. “We were
beginning to think Vanguard Engineering wouldn't be submitting their final structural audit for the Hudson
Waterfront bid. You have the floor.”
I plugged my tablet into the podium’s media system. Instantly, the massive high-definition screens displaying
the room's presentations filled with complex mathematical formulas, structural stress-test simulations, and red-
highlighted safety violations.
“Thank you, Commissioner,” I said, my voice clear and projecting throughout the crowded chamber. “As the
lead structural auditor for Vanguard Engineering, I am officially recommending the immediate disqualification of
Cole Industries’ bid for the Hudson Waterfront redevelopment project.”
A loud murmur rippled through the gallery. Several reporters began whispering excitedly.
Celeste’s lead attorney stood up, his voice booming. “Objection, Commissioner! This is a highly biased,
personal attack by a disgruntled former employee of the Cole family. Elena Vance has a personal vendetta against
my clients.”
“This is not a personal matter, counselor,” I replied calmly, clicking to the next slide. “This is a matter of
public safety. These are the structural blueprints submitted by Cole Industries. As you can see from the concrete
14
density calculations on page 42, they have intentionally substituted high-durability marine concrete with a low-
grade, cheaper aggregate mix. My forensic analysis proves that under normal tidal pressure, the retaining seawalls
will suffer catastrophic structural failure within five years.”
I clicked again, displaying a series of internal emails between Adrian Cole and their concrete supplier,
discussing the deliberate falsification of safety certificates to save fifty-four million dollars.
“This is fraud,” I declared, looking directly at Celeste. “And it is a deliberate conspiracy to endanger the
lives of thousands of New York citizens for the sake of corporate profit.”
The room erupted into absolute chaos. Reporters stood up, shouting questions. Members of the review board
leaned forward, staring at the evidence on their screens in utter shock.
Adrian’s face drained of color, his hands trembling as he stared at the leaked emails.
Celeste stood up, her composure finally breaking. “This is a lie! These files are fabricated! She stole those
documents!”
“Actually, Mrs. Cole, they were obtained legally through a federal subpoena issued early this morning,” a
calm, powerful voice announced from the back of the chamber.
The double doors of the hearing room swung open. Maya walked in, flanked by four federal agents in dark
suits, followed closely by Clara, who stood tall and proud, her eyes locked on her former tormentor.
The crowd gasped. The reporters immediately recognized Clara, the ‘long-lost’ socialite whose
disappearance had been a mystery for three years.
“My name is Clara Montgomery,” she said, her voice clear and strong, echoing through the chamber. “And I
am here to testify under oath about how Cole Industries uses violence, intimidation, and financial fraud to cover up
their crimes.”
Celeste collapsed back into her chair, her face a mask of pale, utter ruin. The empire she had spent her entire

life building was crumbling to dust in front of the entire world.
