Chapter 3 - THE ALLIANCE OF CONVICTION

The silence in the bridal suite stretched, thick and heavy, broken only by the crackle of the fireplace. Adrian Cross
stood mere inches from me, his intense gaze weighing my soul, searching for the catch.
“You’re remarkably cold for a bride who just discovered her husband is a fraud,” Adrian said, his voice low
and analytical. He reached out, his gloved fingers lightly picking up the diamond necklace I had discarded. He let
the gems spill through his fingers. “How do I know this isn't a desperate play to save your skin? To run back to
Marcus and tell him he’s been compromised?”
“If I wanted to save them, I would have cried, screamed, and run out of this room the moment you took off
that mask,” I replied, keeping my eyes locked onto his. “I have spent years watching my brother mock my
intelligence and my father treat me like currency. If I return to them with this story, they won't believe me anyway.
They’ll think I’ve gone mad, or worse, they’ll lock me up to keep the ten million from being jeopardized.”
I took a step back, giving myself some breathing room. “I want a life, Adrian. A real one. Not one bought and
sold by my family’s greed. You want revenge. Our goals align perfectly.”
Adrian walked over to the large leather armchair by the fire and sat down, crossing one leg over the other. He
looked like a king assessing a new, unexpected chess piece. “Show me.”
“Show you what?”
“The proof. You claim you have three years of forensic data. Show me a sample. Let’s see if your math
matches my intelligence reports.”
I nodded. I walked to the heavy mahogany wardrobe where my overnight bag had been placed by the butler.
I retrieved a small, unassuming silver USB drive hidden inside the lining of my makeup case. Returning to the
hearth, I opened my personal laptop, booted it up, and plugged in the drive.
Adrian watched me, his expression unreadable. I opened a highly encrypted spreadsheet—one of dozens I
had painstakingly compiled over late nights of secret calculations.
“This is Marcus’s active ledger for the Hillside Development project,” I said, pointing to the glowing screen.
“On paper, they spent four million dollars on structural steel and concrete reinforcement. But if you look at the sub-
ledger hidden in the temporary cache files, the actual payout was only 1.2 million. The remaining 2.8 million was
routed through three different shell companies—Apex Logistics, Blue Horizon Holding, and Vista Real Estate—
before being deposited into a personal bank account in the Cayman Islands under Marcus’s alias.”

I scrolled down, showing the digital signature hashes. “The inspector who signed off on the structural
integrity of Hillside is the same inspector who signed off on your father’s Portside Marina project ten years ago. He
was bribed then, and he is being bribed now. If a federal auditor looks at this, the company will be shut down
overnight, and Marcus will face twenty years for wire fraud and public endangerment.”
Adrian leaned forward, his eyes scanning the numbers with rapid, precise comprehension. The skepticism in
his eyes was slowly replaced by a dark, burning fascination.
“This is beautiful,” he whispered, a genuine, terrifyingly attractive smile spreading across his face. “You
didn't just study accounting, Evelyn. You built a guillotine.”
“I built a survival plan,” I corrected him. “But I didn't have the leverage to pull the cord. You do. You have
the capital, the legal team, and the Alden Vale identity to keep them distracted while we set the trap.”
Adrian stood up and closed my laptop, his movements swift. He stood close to me, his presence
overwhelming. “Let’s establish the terms of our arrangement, Evelyn. In public, you are the devoted, submissive
wife of Mr. Alden Vale—a frail, eccentric old man who demands absolute privacy. You will live here, in this
mansion. In private, you are my partner. We work together to dismantle your family’s empire piece by piece. Once
they are ruined and my father’s name is cleared, we divorce. I will provide you with five million dollars, a clean
slate, and a new identity anywhere in the world.”
“And what about my brother and father?” I asked. “They cannot just go bankrupt. They belong in prison.
They killed your father, Adrian. And they slowly killed my spirit for twenty-six years.”
Adrian’s blue eyes darkened, a dangerous warmth flickering in their depths. He reached out, his bare hand—
warm and calloused—gently grasping my chin, tilting my face up to meet his.
“They will lose everything, Evelyn. Their money, their freedom, and their pride. I promise you that.”
The touch of his hand sent a strange, electric shiver through my body. For a man who had built his life on
cold, calculating vengeance, his hand was incredibly warm.
“We have a deal, Adrian,” I whispered.
He stared at me for a long beat, his thumb lightly brushing against the edge of my jawline before he slowly
released me.
“Get some rest, Evelyn. Tomorrow, the show begins. Your brother is coming to our first family lunch to
discuss his 'new business proposal' for his wealthy brother-in-law. It’s time to let him dig his own grave.”
